Salsa Chica: How I Learned To Dance Salsa And Avoid Real Life Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

Once Solange began to dance salsa, she did little else. She worked and she danced. Try as she may, she could not imagine a more desirable way to spend her time. She became a “Salsera” or a “Salsa Chica,” a woman who rearranges her entire life to accommodate her need to dance as much as humanly possible.

It was a big experiment at first. What would happen if she danced night after night? Would her body fall apart? Would she be able to function at work? Would her mom get mad? She just lost weight and toned her body without getting on a hamster torture device. She grew more comfortable in her skin, developed confidence, became friends with people from different cultures, learned about music, and fell in love with the “wrong guys,” – Salsa Guys – who weren’t that different from other “wrong guys” but these guys could dance. Like every other Salsa Chica she struggled with her passions, choices, and technique.
In “Salsa Chica: How I Learned To Dance Salsa And Avoid Real Life”, Solange recounts the journey
of learning to dance salsa and how it transformed and maybe even saved her life.

I just finished this book and I'm not sure what this says about my library, but it was one of the best books I've ever read! It made me laugh, it was well written, very descriptive and covered aspects of salsa I never thought about or knew even after 22 years of salsa dancing in Los Angeles. I loved all the familiarity as well, of course, since I'm very familiar with the author’s experience and the Los Angeles salsa scene and family. I just want to express that I'm just so happy you published it and that I got to read it and learn about you, too, Solange! You are very talented lady!!! I even know I’ll be reading this book multiple times throughout my life! A great read for sure, especially if you’re a salsa dancer or remotely interested in salsa dancing.

As a partner-dance (swing) addict myself, I expected to relate to and be entertained by Salsa Chica. But Castro’s memoir absolutely enthralled me! Her sense of humor, depth of perception, and unique twist on being a young woman whose passion messes with her search for love are truly phenomenal. The "characters" and situations are beautifully drawn and laugh-out-loud funny. This book will always have a special place in my heart and on my bookshelf.

This book is hilarious, confessional and I fell in love with Salsa Chica and her cast of motley salsa characters. If you’re a woman over 25 and curious about what it looks like to surrender to life and feel truly alive read it now! The writing is fantastic-it’s Eat Pray Love meets Sex in the City after #metoo with an Anne Lamott humility.
Wise, tender and I’ve got a hankering to sign up for a salsa lesson now!

Castro writes a true adventure tale that allows us to follow her along a trail of awareness and discovery that exposes so many of the wonders of life. All of this is done through the bracing, sometimes tragic, almost always electrified world of salsa. While this is an adequate introduction to life in salsa, it serves tremendously (an engagingly) as a mini tour guide to the vagaries of life. She shines through with humour and wisdom as we witness the twirls, dips and occasional unseemly moments of the immersive, addictive world of salsa. Read it ready to laugh, cry and truly appreciate the scenery. In two words: read it!
