"Coming of age the hard way" is a great description of this book.  Everyone has to learn life's lessons as they grow up, but some experience more and different hurdles than others -- things that other people may not even know about. This personal account reveals how deeply and personally his challenges directed his life until he finally found a way to understand and cope.  Ultimately it proves that a person can choose not to be a victim but, rather, to make your own plans and goals --- and make your dreams come true.

Odessa and the oil patch was a hard place to grow up. Mike got his act together by being a good person, analytical, curious about finding the why’s of life. I think of all the individuals that have had bad experiences growing up in Odessa that did not ask these questions. Thank you Helen Joyce for the pencil lead still visible in my right thigh!

This is a deeply personal and honest rendering of how one man created a good life after many setbacks. Inspiring!

The author makes victims of others, which he does not detail in the book

A very interesting book - especially the last few chapters. There is something to be learned in it that can benefit everybody - information about ADD and neurofeedback that can change your life.
The author tells of his personal journey through a life fraught with A series of terrible circumstances that seemed to give him no chance for success in life. However he managed to overcome every obstacle and defeat the victim mentality. A true lesson in how to succeed against impossible odds.

This is a real book about real people, astonishingly honest and revealing. It is the story of a young man whose friends help in his struggle to overcome a dysfunctional family and an abusive father. It's the story of a determined young man who overcomes adversity and succeeds brilliantly as a husband and father of two sons. It's the story of a "flight plan" for his life, and how he chose to avoid the victim mentality.

My husband Jerry and I have both read the book and found it to be one once stared we did not want to put down. Since we grew up Odessa the same time as Mike it was really a memory trip for us as well. Thank you Mike for writing this book. We are also proud of you for over coming.
