The Veiled Thread Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

In 1914, twenty year old Eiric is droving for his father with his brothers, Ted and Joe, and Jimmy, the farm hand who always looks out for them.

The boys yearn to break free from their controlling and aggressive father, but his manipulations stand in the way. Could the war in Palestine be a way for them to gain freedom?

Interwoven with the past is the present day story of Harry who discovers he is going to be a father. It's a shock as he was on the verge of ending the relationship with Frances and, to top it off, his working life seems to be falling apart. He feels trapped by everything. Then his grandfather visits and Harry finds himself confiding in the old man, searching for the source of his doubts. In the process, he unleashes a torrent of bitterness and recrimination within a divided family, a family grappling with the fallout from the madness of an almost forgotten war.

Two men's lives, one caught up in the hysteria of a war, both caught in a web of their infidelities and self-doubt, separated by a generation, bound together by the horrors of an insane conflict.

Will they ever be able to live without guilt and reconcile deeds that span the generations?

This book clarified for me the impact of family traumas going back three generations in my family. I can see these projecting into future generations in my own lifetime. You will find the book thought-provoking and challenging. I recommend it without reservations.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that what could have been just another paperback turned out to be a real page turner. I lose interest all too easily in run of the mill books, but this one kept my interest up throughout with some plot twists and thought provoking situations thrown into a family story over 4 generations. By the end, I had a lot of sympathy for the characters. It seems that there will be more books to come on based on this book, so it will be good to find out what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Veiled Thread - A highly thought provoking and engaging read.

This was a rare book that I read in a day - I felt compelled to keep reading but with a sense of regret that I was getting towards the end. It makes you really think about the influences in your own life - how we are shaped by our experiences, our environments and our inherent genetics.
The interfacing of chapters based in the present day with others capturing episodes within the horrors of WW1 is highly effective in demonstrating our intragenerational foundations. The characters provide a highly realistic picture of humanity with all its strengths and flaws.
I would highly recommend this book and can't wait to read Stephen's next novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Deeds and Misdeeds of the Past - We live the legacy
Reviewed in Australia on July 19, 2020
This is a book with many layers. On the surface it's an adventure mixed with drama and a little romance. Beneath the veneer though, this book explores the relationship we have with past generations, how they influence our very deepest emotions through the phenomenon inherited trauma. This book is also an allegory for how our original people have been treated, be they the native people of North America, Australia or elsewhere. Well written, engaging, a real page turner. Well worth a read. I can't wait for the sequel - there's a teaser at the back of the book. Five stars
