Based on decades of experience as a therapist, parenting coach and mother of a child who was afraid of dogs, I developed the Overcoming Fear of Dogs (OFOD) protocol.

This is a step-by-step guide for parents (therapists will find it helpful as well) based on exposure therapy using a live dog.

◆ This book provides an easy to understand tool for parents to help their child overcome the fear of dogs.

By using exposure therapy and my specifically designed exercises, parents will gradually increase their child's exposure to a real dog and thereby decrease their child's fear and resistance. This book helps parents understand how and why their child is afraid of dogs and most importantly how to help their child face the fear and overcome it.

◆ When a child has a strong fear of dogs it is important to address this fear as soon as possible.

There is much to gain when children are able to overcome their fears. They develop self-confidence and self-esteem and feel empowered. Children who face their fears learn coping skills and self-control, two of the biggest predictors of success later in life. In addition, they learn to speak up and ask for help.

◆ By using the method in this book children will become more aware of their feelings and learn to express them clearly.

• Mindfulness and relaxation exercises are included in the book to help this develop.
• Anxiety and fear create the feeling of being out of control.

◆ My method helps kids feel in control and ""take back the leash"" when interacting with dogs.

Most children do not outgrow this fear and they need to have supervised brief and positive experiences with dogs in order to feel safe and in control when interacting with them. Dogs are everywhere these days and it is impossible to avoid them. Kids who are afraid of dogs suffer socially and emotionally. They avoid sleepovers and play dates where a dog is in residence. They often refuse to go to a park in case they might encounter a dog. Some children will even endanger themselves by running into the street to avoid a dog.

Children are afraid of things they don't understand and this book provides education for parents and children about dogs. The book includes information on how dogs communicate as well as how to ""read"" dogs and know when it is safe to interact with them and when it is best to stay away.

◆ My ultimate goal is to enable children to feel comfortable around dogs so their lives aren't disrupted by the fear of them.

While the book is designed for parents of children aged 5-12 my method can be used with older children and adults.

Wow am I glad I found this book! We could barely leave our building without our 9 year old asking “will there be any dogs outside” through her chattering teeth. In just a few days we could walk outside freely, and then within weeks we actually got a dog of our own. Highly recommend!

I stumbled upon this book during a desperate search for ways to help my daughter. Her fear of dogs was significantly impacting her daily life, from attending playdates to visiting family members with dogs. I felt at a loss on how to assist her until I discovered this book. It's an excellent starting point for understanding fears in general and learning more about dogs. We've just begun the program outlined in the book, and it has already boosted my confidence in supporting my daughter through her fears. I highly recommend this book. It's not only easy to read, but the tips are practical and can be implemented right away. This book transcends the specific fear of dogs, offering strategies to tackle any kind of fear.

As a professional working with kids with disabilities, it's not uncommon for kids to be anxious or approach/avoidant when first meeting my therapy dog. Cohen's book give very practical advice for teaching children resilience while learning to interact safely and calmly with dogs. As a resource for parents dealing with a more significantly fearful child, she provides specific guidance illustrated with stories showing her experience with a range of children's needs. I highly recommend this for anyone wanting to incorporate dogs into a child's life.

This book is EXACTLY what you NEED!! It's all there - & so easy to read!! This book and the way that she wrote it, deeply resonated with me. She understood exactly what I was going through and gave so many real world examples thru all of the clients that she has helped. I took a bunch of notes because I didn't want to miss any detail when I took this on. She has given me a proven roadmap that I can easily navigate in order to have my child get over his fear. I didn't realize this was affecting his self-esteem and emotionally draining him like it does so many other children. She gives so many AMAZING ideas, so many resources, and so many websites that I never would have thought of. There are checklists and certificates if you want to use them, but really her process is so easy and thoughtful and well-designed and pragmatic. I am so grateful I found this book and I'm so excited to take this on and finally have my son get over his fear!! There is no way this process would not work and I feel like I know exactly what to do. I've already been in contact with one of the organizations she recommended and have already implemented some of the very easy beginning steps and I already see such a huge difference! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

The book is easy to read and understand. It lists steps to start interacting with the therapy dog and then move on to other dogs. It is admirable that the book is empathetic toward those scared of dogs, allowing oneself to say, "Please leash your dog." if they sense being uncomfortable in a situation and not feel shame about it. The book covers how one should try to understand dogs' body language to learn to respect their space and feelings, interact with them positively, and prevent any mishaps. I found it very helpful as I worked on my fears, and I am glad that the recommendations have helped me become more comfortable and enjoy being around dogs.

Anyone whose child has a fear of dogs knows how hard it can be. I had tried multiple ways to help my daughter overcome her fear of dogs. I even took her to a "therapist" who was unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the fear and ended up making it worse. This book is the only thing that has worked. Much to my shock, we followed the protocol and my daughter pet the dog multiple times during our first session. She then pet another dog that was nearby that we had identified as friendly with the owner. Thank you Stefani for this wonderful book that really is a game-changer!!

This book is an amazing resource for helping kids through what can often be a severely life-impacting phobia. As a pediatrician and parent, it has helped me both in my work and with my own daughter on her own phobia, which she is now over.

Stephani emphasizes the physical aspects of the anxiety and fear and presents effective ways of addressing them. Not only is my daughter now free of her phobia, but after a lot of work with this book we now have a 30lb rescue dog she adores and she now happily greets dogs that she sees outside of the house.
