Silicon Valley Job Hunting: Cautionary Guidance on the IT Industry Kindle Edition
Do you look forward to going to work?
Want to know how to make changes that help you?
Don't want to quit?
Everyone should enjoy their work, because most of us dedicate 30+ years of our lives to it.But many people leave their careers to chance. They go through the rituals of a job search and often accept a position either because it's the first offer they receive or because the benefits are attractive. There are no selection criteria or proper due diligence of a prospective company.
The usual result is therefore an unhappy work experience and the desire to move on after a few years of tolerating the irritations because we don't know how to change things.
This book describes the realities of many aspects of the corporate world, with a focus on the IT industry. It examines the default structures of many companies and why that leads to problems. It highlights what to avoid when selecting an employer and what to do if you end up in an unhappy situation.
Not all companies make these mistakes, so a little knowledgeable examination can make a massive difference. Even if a company is making mistakes, you can at least defend yourself against the implications during the job offer phase, when you have the most leverage.
Many people expect the IT industry to be a beacon of corporate forward-thinking and are surprised (too late) when they discover how conservative, old-fashioned and dysfunctional many companies can be. Get a head start on your career choices.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2020This book is a great guide for anyone looking to get a job in Silicon Valley because it breaks down the different areas you can make a difference in. While job hunting in general is not perfect, this book helps you understand the "behind the scenes" of the different functions. Great advice, such as "There are a couple of reasons why anyone would want to build a computer rather than simply buying one; there is a desire to maximize performance or there are design considerations that come into play".
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2020This is an insightful and interesting look at the world of IT.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2020You can tell right away the author is one smart guy and is a tried and true veteran of not only Silicon Valley but the industry in general. Unfortunately the book does not give readers what they are looking for, at least not in an easy digestible way. The book could have been condensed to half its size but it goes on and on about the author's trials and tribulations as it tries to weave tips to job hunt in the valley. There's no doubt much of the information is interesting and useful but its just so much that it strains your eyes with its tight format and very little pauses, leaving the reader a bit tired of so much information.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2020Terrific book, really more useful, far-ranging and nuanced than the title suggests. This should be required reading for anyone entering the job market, much less the IT industry. It's basically a backstage look at how corporations really work, written in prose that is lucid and authoritative. Would love to read this author on other topics. If he's not a full-time professional writer, he should be.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2020A well-written guide that I found helpful.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2020The author has extensive experience working in Silicon Valley and gives his opinion on how some computer companies are doing.
He describes to job hunters what they should consider in order to work on the site.
Useful reading for anyone looking for a job in the computer technology field.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2020This is an excellent reference guide for someone aspiring to work in the fascinating world of Silicon Valley IT. It is structured in a very organized manner and serves to explain the different types of jobs available as well as the sub-industries. Highly recommend.
