Obligations (Murphy's Lawless Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 259 ratings

Taken from their planet and their century, they are…the Lost Soldiers.

The hijacked Twentieth Century troops known as Murphy’s Lawless have made planetfall on the planet R’Bak and accomplished their first main objective. Led by Lieutenant Harold Tapper and some of the Lost Soldiers, a clan of proudly independent nomads successfully attacked a unit of the J’Stull Satrapy and made off with a number of much-needed combat vehicles. But the J’Stull won’t—can’t—let that defeat go unanswered. They are the servitors of the overlords of Kulsis: outsystem autocrats whose forces shall soon return to take whatever resources—and vengeance—they wish. And the J’Stull can’t afford to be the objects of their wrath.

Captain Bo Moorfield—a dishonored US mechanized cavalry officer before waking up in this strange future—now has to shepherd the convoy of armored cars, APCs, and other all-terrain vehicles—back to the Lost Soldier’s base high in the forbidding desert terrain. Unfortunately, the stolen vehicles aren’t at the peak of performance, and Lieutenant Tapper is barely able to keep ahead of the J’Stull force racing after him.

But Moorfield has two things the J’Stull don’t: training as a professional cavalry officer and a force of half-trained troopers mounted on whinnies. If he’s able to get his own forces into the right position, maybe—just maybe—he will be able to snatch victory from the jaws of almost-certain defeat. If not, the J’Stull will roll up Moorefield’s small unit and push straight on through to the Lost Soldiers’ makeshift base, killing them all.

And if that happens, the future for the rest of Murphy’s Lawless isn’t merely bleak: it’s nonexistent.

This latest outing into the Caine Riordan universe – written by Kevin Ikenberry – focuses on the experiences of Captain Hubert –Bo– Moorefield and his taskforce, who have set up shop at Camp Stark, a Forward Operating Base on the border of the Haman desert region of R’bak, in anticipation of the arrival of Lieutenant Harold Tapper and his Sarmatchani strike force. Tapper and his team had previously liberated a considerable vehicle cache and other operational supplies from their J’strull enemies, and are being pursued. It’s Moorefield’s job to make sure the strike force and their contraband are taken in to safe custody.
There you have the premise of a gritty little tale that’s bound to please, especially as Murphy’s Law runs rampant, and things don’t go to plan.
I won’t say anything further about the story ark, as – for me at any rate – that’s not what this visit to R’bak is really about. No, what I particularly liked about Ikenberry’s approach was its emphasis on the psychological cost facing those soldiers who serve their country or end up having to go to war.
Yes, there’s action aplenty. (This is a story within the Caine Riordan universe after all.) And its well written. But as a veteran who has seen action in a number of different theaters around the world, I really appreciated the subtle reminder we get of the other, often hidden war that goes on inside the minds of those who give their all to keep us safe. That war can make you bleed. It hurts. It inflicts injuries just as real, just as debilitating as the ‘real thing.’ And the emotional impact on those you’ve left behind?
In Bo Moorefield’s case, he was abducted from earth and put into cryogenic sleep in 1992, on the very day he received a ‘Dear John’ letter from his wife, Sharon. We explore his feelings about that. After all, he wakes up one hundred and thirty years later on a very different world, countless millions of miles away, and is completely helpless to do anything about it. He can’t call. He can’t write. He can’t offer to sit down and talk things through to see if there’s any chance of a reconciliation. No, it’s a past event; long-gone history by the time he realizes what’s happened, and he has to carry that burden into battle.
But how does it affect him? His outlook? His capacity to relate to others effectively? His ability to take command and make effective, objective decisions? Is he still capable of inspiring those he leads? Because don’t forget, he’s not the only one dealing with ghosts of the past, and the J’strull aren’t going to give up their assets without one hell of a fight!
Yes, there’s a witch’s brew of trouble fomenting, and its up to Bo Moorefield to prioritize his obligations and find a solution before it’s too late.
A thoughtful and evocative tale about what soldiers on the frontline have to contend with.

Good continuation of the series. New characters add to the story. Everyone came to this world with a different backstory.

Another release and yet a couple more viewpoints of the mission. Sentient riding creatures give provide an almost western feel as the mission become a battle for both physical and mental survival. Both Captain Bo Moorefield and Aliza Turzan remain fixated on memories of their failures in the past lives. A failed marriage, a botched command, a loss of meaning and failing a friend all remain despite the job in years and a totally new situation as they mount up and ride out of Fort, pardon me, Camp Stark to escort the mechanized vehicles captured in raid discussed in the first story in the series. Outnumbered and outgunned by the approaching enemy force will they find a way to shift focus to the here and now and get the vehicles back up through defensive terrain to safety? And just what are their mounts? A great tale by Kevin Ikenberry that is perfect for a break from gardening during a spring rain storm.

This book, like the one before is candy. Hard Sci-Fi that draws you in. I complained previously that the first book, Shakes, had left me wanting and didn't complete the story. I should have waited and I apologize to the authors. Obligations picks up where Shakes left off with a bit of a lateral move to another of the Lost Soldiers. Kevin Ikenberry does an excellent job of maintaining the story and adding his own twist in.

With battles , problem solving, internal conflict and even some love, this book will have you cheering these "living" anachronisms and begging for the next book. I am truly enjoying this series as a branch of the Caine Riordan series. It fills in and adds new plots to the overall universe. I pretty sure that if you enjoy very well written, hard sci-fi, you'll enjoy Murphy's Lawless.

I think that 3 of these short books could be one novel. Seems making these short stories into individual books isn't the best way of doing this.

It is always fun to begin a fresh new universe and see it unfold before you eyes. These authors really take the time to build layers and add new areas to this new saga. I was happy to have Murphy lingering on the periphery to tie in the past, but am glad that the majority was developing new characters and situations! Going to be a great series!

Like all the characters including the "horses" but just short of five star story.

Obligations is extemerly well written, I really enjoyed reading the story and I found the story to be thought provoking. There was a seamless transition from Shakes and no let down from the bench mark Massa set. The plot centers around Bo Moorefield and Aliza Turan who are both dealing with issues in their past as they go out on a mission. The mission is intense and could be Inkenberry’s most elegant writing effort so far in his career. I found Obligations to be on par, if not better than Super-Sync, which I nominated for a Dragon Award. Do yourself a favor and read Obligations. It helps if you read Shakes first. I look forward to the next installment of the story.
