DINOSAUR: Book 1 (The New World Series of prehistoric fiction, time travel mystery thriller novels) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 431 ratings

Spaceships, wormholes and dinosaurs! Don't miss it.
Stephen Baxter (Time, The Long Earth, Doctor Who)

Epic! Full of big ideas! Dinosaur is a thrilling read told on a huge scale. Stephen Llewelyn clearly knows - and loves - his dinosaurs, and that knowledge and passion shines through. The result is a big, bold adventure - and yet one that very much fits the mould of classic science-fiction, some very clever protagonists responding to a crisis by breaking it down into problems to be solved. What's not to love?
Simon Guerrier (Primeval, Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Immersing myself in the vivid world of Dinosaur, I really felt I’d travelled back to the Cretaceous. Utilising up to date scientific research, author Stephen Llewelyn has breathed life back into the herds of giants and their predators that in the past, roamed across Patagonia. If like me, you love time travel and prehistoric beasts, you’ll relish this book.
Nigel Marven, TV Naturalist (Prehistoric Park, Walking With Dinosaurs)

The leader of a sinister political group hatches an insane plan to save humanity. Fighting to stop them could doom us all. When every action and decision may determine the fate of everyone who has ever lived, the right choice is not always clear. However, for one man, there is no choice at all...

Captain James Douglas sets off on a mundane transport and supply mission that quickly descends into disaster. Leading a fledgling society through a wild and hostile world was not part of his brief. Nor was the custodianship of all human life, history and endeavour. Worse still, an enemy hides among his passengers, while the knowledge of Tim Norris, a boy just days out of school, may be all that stands between mankind and extinction.

The crew and passengers of the USS New World are lost 100 million years ago in Mid-Cretaceous Gondwana. It is the time of the dinosaur... for now.

Review

"Spaceships, wormholes and dinosaurs! Don't miss it."
Stephen Baxter (Time, The Long Earth, Doctor Who)

"
A highly suspenseful time-travel adventure series, combining a clever mix of detailed prehistory and history throughout - not to mention some great bad guys. The twists and turns really keep you guessing, while the darkness and humour really keep you reading. Not to be missed."
Black Sheep Books

"
If you were looking for a good time travel sci-fi, you are in the right place! Stephen Llewelyn delivers the science-fiction goods with his exceptional DINOSAUR. It already starts off with that "stuff of the future" feeling, and in a lot of ways, you would feel like the story were going in a completely different direction (were it not for the pretty straight-forward title). Llewelyn makes it easy to conceptualize all the goings-on in the story as well--the story flows with ease, even though it has its mysteries. The story carries you along for an entertaining ride, and it keeps you guessing what's to come next. Llewelyn accomplishes a great task here of blending together all the right stuff for a great character-driven science-fiction tale. The people on the journey are relatable and likable, the situation is incredible but Llewelyn seals it with believable science. This is the kind of story you'd love to see realized in film or television, but for now, the brilliant writing and your imagination will have to take you there."

Stephen Llewelyn (1972–not dead yet)

Whereas Obelix fell into a cauldron of magic potion at an early age, Stephen fell into the construction industry, spending most of his post education working life trying to climb back out! Humble and unorthodox beginnings for a writer perhaps, but with lifelong passions for history, archaeology, palaeontology and music, the lure of writing stories was simply too much.

The New World series was a natural beginning, exploring humanity's uncertain future from a long lost past, along with all the intrigues that have plagued man (and woman) throughout every era.

Ever distracted by anything of a scientific or historic nature, Stephen suffers from an irritating fascination with almost everything and lives in a mountainous region of the UK with many crazy, but much beloved dogs (and possibly one of the most patient women who ever lived).

He hopes to fill the next few years with more books and at least some cool stuff before the brackets above acquire a closing date.

This book was a delight to read. Excellent plot, believable characters, and a great understanding of the subject matter. This book held my interest from the first chapter.

Could not put the book down!
Interesting look at life in the future with people a lot like we are now. Same Hope's and dreams, with the world vastly over crowded and resources at a premium, and with the ultra rich grabbing all the can leaving the middle class and below with mostly nothing.
Settling on Mars is the great hope for the passengers of the New World, but that's the whole story, something happens and the ship doesn't quite make it to Mars...
By the title you can guess that something very unexpected and exciting does happen. It is scary, the characters are fully fleshed out, some are lovable, some are people you hope to never meet. At times funny, sad, or thrilling but not to be missed.

I am going to simply say, that being a dinosaur fanatic, this story does not disappoint. It was easy to get caught up in the intrigue, the terrorists and the sci-fi aspect of space travel. The characters were so very well written that you immediately get caught up with their circumstances and find you care for some, and definitely hate others. So when the time comes for dinosaur interaction, well, let's just say that I was more than excited for the characters to see where things go for them. Exciting, scary, and very well written. And now I am off to the 2nd book, Revenge....YES!

just shows you cant trust amazon reviews - from the earliest pages it was easy to see that this was going to be a ponderous production. It reminded me of writing from the 1960 with a sort of Agatha Christie tone and style - in other words far from contemporary. Also the author seems fixated on local accents - we have a Scottish captain, a couple of East Indians and a Kiwi and an Aussie and boy does the author love to transcribe their accents - this seems to be his notion of creating character. And of course along with the phony language comes the stereotypes - in fact the language leads right into the stereotypes. So overall. a fantastical plot and poor writing that made this a tiresome and wasted purchase.

The story itself has an excellent premise and is well written.

That said, it doesn't get to the dinosaurs quickly enough and suffers from a severe lack of people being eaten by them.

I don't feel that I'm unique in that I want to see or read about dinosaurs devouring humans, as we are in fact, delicious.

The book didn't leave me invested enough to continue reading the story. It might have been better advertised under the time travel and espionage aspects rather than the dinosaur aspect.

Gave up on this one about 75% through. Endless boring dialogue, cut out characters from every demographic imaginable (I guess for political correctness), and a whodunnit murder plot that could not have been less interesting. Most of the “action” occurs on a space craft-dinosaurs are a minor plot point. And despite the story occurring decades into the future, the knowledge of the Mesozoic is very 2020-and the “expert” is a teenage kid-ugh. Also, I found it odd that no speculative paleo is explored-despite (you’d think) the fact that the science would have moved forward over the decades-remember the story is set in twenty one something. The characters are actually shocked at the dino-bird connection. Really?

This is the first in a trilogy but I bailed-with no regrets.

I enjoyed the book very much. A great story arc, well-drawn characters and plenty of intrigue to keep me turning the pages.

It’s a great story that keeps you gripped tightly and keeps you guessing; I found that I just kept wanting to read more, wanting to know what would happen next. The characters are all well written and have distinct pesronalities that feed well into the storyline. There’s also a lot of witty humour and dialogue to keep you smiling too, which works well with the pace of the novel. And as for the subject matter....intrigue, science fuction, time travel and Dinosaurs - great! All written in an approachable and very knowledgeable way. Llewelyn certainly knows his stuff!
One last thing. I really like the quirky little sketches at the head of the chapters. They give just a little hint at what’s coming up.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found myself wanting to read on, or trying to guess where the story was leading me to; always a sign of a good book. I believe book two is out now too - yay! I highly recommend “Dinosaur” - the start of a very promising series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read.

I enjoyed it worth the £1.99 on Kindle, no doubt would translate into a special effects film well, however it did not intrigue me enough to splash out another 6 quid on the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honestly, I can't get enough!

Can't get enough! I've had this book for about 4 days and I'm 3/4 the way through it!
After really enjoying the horror and suspense of the Jurassic Park books I wanted to get another dinosaur related book.
Considering Dinosaurs don't actually come into it until about half way through. The first half is amazing!
The mystery, the tension! Just couldn't put it down!
The first half I would consider more of a "who dunnit" in a sci-fi setting.
With relatable and likeable characters you can't help but carry on turning the pages wishing, preying they are okay as all hell breaks loose!
Can't wait for the next one.
No doubt will be ordering this week.

Good story but not enough action . To much chat and to much time on board the the ship. Also for me the ending falls a little flat when you find out who is behind the sabotage and why. There is a conversation in the book which leads in this direction i was hoping i was wrong but I wasn't shame. Books 2 and 3 are not for me i have read the samples .
