If We Ever Meet Again (If Love Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 2,576 ratings

One year is all it takes for strangers to become lovers...

19-year-old Farrah Lin is going to fall in love for the first time during her year abroad in Shanghai. She's sure of it.

The only problem? Her would-be leading man is her new friend’s boyfriend.

There’s nothing worse than being in love with someone you can’t have...or at least, she thinks it’s love.

But if that’s true, why can’t she stop fantasizing about someone else, specifically the cocky blond athlete with the world’s biggest ego (and greatest dimples)?

***
Blake Ryan is—
was—a college football star who shocked the sports world when he quit after his third national championship. Instead of dealing with the fallout, he escapes to Shanghai, where he vows to keep life simple.

No football. No commitments. No romance.

But no matter how hard he tries, he can’t keep a certain beautiful brunette off his mind...or out of his heart.

What starts as a physical attraction develops into something much deeper as Blake and Farrah get swept up in the magic of Shanghai—and each other. But they only have one year, and there are forces outside their control that threaten to rip them apart.

Can their relationship survive the test...or was it just not meant to be?

WARNING: This is the first book in a duet. It's a full-length novel with no sudden cliffhangers, but Blake and Farrah’s story concludes in book two, If the Sun Never Sets, which takes place five years later.

If We Ever Meet Again is a steamy strangers to friends to lovers romance. Recommended for 18+ due to adult language and explicit content.

I am obsessed. The characters, story, freedom, self-discovery, friendships, bonds, adventures, just everything. The arch of Farrah and Blake’s relationship was timeless and portrayed beautifully. It didn’t feel rushed or unrealistic but poetic and natural. The dynamic of being away from home and meeting new people, who end up becoming a family is special and is something to be treasured. The fear, loss, self doubt, mistakes, and worries throughout the group was reassuring that not everyone has their future figured out. I was completely transfixed and enraptured by these characters and I didn’t want it to end.

“All their moments together flashed through his mind, and the boy who’d once sworn he would never cry over a girl… cried. He cried because he’d hurt her. He cried because it kept his mind off the desperate loneliness that weighed on his soul the moment she left. Most of all, he cried for what they had, what they lost, and what they could never be.”

“Given the drought in Farrah’s dating life, she’d settle for any kind of romantic relationship, even one that ended tragically. Well, maybe not with death, but with a breakup or something. Anything that proved the crazy head-over-heels love you found in books and movies existed in real life.”

“Farrah’s heart rate kicked up a notch. He was the opposite of her ideal romantic hero—tall, dark, and handsome, with a side of sensitive, cultured, and well-read—but there was no denying Blake’s s3x appeal. It dripped from him like honey from a hive. “So we didn’t need to introduce ourselves.” “No.” He stepped closer without releasing her hand. “But I wanted an excuse to touch you.”

“He wasn’t fluent in Chinese yet, but he was fluent in the language that counts: food.”

“You’re having a secret affair with Blake Ryan!” “I am not!” Farrah wrenched her arm away and shook it out. “Jesus, you cut off my circulation.” “Don’t change the subject. You spent an entire day with Blake and didn’t tell us about it. Why?” Olivia wiggled her eyebrows. “What naughty things did you get up to?” “None. You read too many erotica novels.”

“I think—” Blake’s voice turned rough. “You’re a smartass who’s too stubborn for your own good. I think you drive me crazier than any person ought to. And I think I might die if I can’t be with you.”

Definitely diving into the next book in hopes Farrah and Blake will get their HEA! But I did enjoy reading this book and the story line. Set in Shanghai, a group of American college students studying abroad find themselves together as a little family away from home. After trying to ignore their feelings, Blake and Farrah finally give in to a relationship and their chemistry is perfect between them. The last third of the book and ending had my heart hurting as Blake struggles to decide what to do after making a terrible decision. Will they ever see each other again? Will they rekindle their relationship in the future? I can only hope so!

The romance was so cute and smiley, but seriously? I cannot stand the pregnant ex trope who is still obsessed with her ex and somehow convinces him the child is his. It’s vile and disgusting and I don’t believe for a second Blake did that. And Chloe is a lying dirty rat, and OMG IF HIS SISTER JOY was in on it, then I give up.

My Star Rating: 4/5 ⭐
My Spice Rating: 3/5 🌶️

If We Ever Meet Again tells the story of Farrah as she navigates the journey toward finding her first love. The setting immediately pulled me in. I was an expat in Asia for a short time and love that this was set in Shanghai. The setting was described well and I loved the cultural element of this book. I enjoyed Ana Huang's writing in this book. It flowed so well that I finished it in one sitting. It was really easy for me to immerse myself into their world. I was rooting for Blake and Farrah. I loved how their relationship progressed throughout the story. During their year together they experienced so many ups and downs. I felt so many emotions while reading this - I laughed, smiled, and cried. The characters were believable. I did not have the best impression of Blake at first, but he grew on me. Farrah was a bit naive in the beginning but it was nice witnessing her growth throughout the story. I felt their experiences were appropriate based on their ages and where they are in their lives. The ending did break me, but I know Blake and Farrah's story continues in the next book.

Overall this was a good read. I enjoyed the banter and the spice! I look forward to continuing with this series.

wow if the phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover” has ever bit me in the ašs, it’s now. I opted not to read this series before Twisted because I was feeling meh about the covers. How dumb that was. This was such a good read and I sorely needed it after my book hangover post King Of Greed lol. Going back to the college age and knowing that the Twisted are the next age group up (roughly in their twenties), then Kings of Sin are the group after that was just *chefs kiss*. They follow each other perfectly. Even tho I usually can’t get into college romance because I have to age people up in my head most of the time, I was still immediately sucked into this book and changed my tune really quickly XD. can’t wait to keep reading the series!!!

Loved the friendships that were created. The experiences they all went through. And I needed more. So glad there is a sequel.

Going into the book knowing there was a breakup and that there will be a part two is one thing. Reading it with that in mind is another. It was also hard to reconcile the ages of the characters. It read like a YA but with adult material. That in of itself was a little off putting. Giving it another chance, here’s to part two!

4.0 out of 5 stars A bittersweet opposites-attract steamy new adult romance!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 3, 2021
Oh. Holy. Angst. 🥵 This took my heart and shredded it with All. The. Feels.

This was a fairly short read and I finished it in the span of a few hours this afternoon. It's an achingly bittersweet opposites-attract romance that had a generous dose of angst, and though I generally tend to avoid angsty romance because I'm weak, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I liked Huang's writing style and the story was well-paced. The author also managed to bring Shanghai to life with vivid descriptions of the people and the bustling city life, the towering skyscrapers and old architecture, the mouthwateringly delicious food, and the vibrant art scene and nightlife. It seems like such an eclectic city and although I've never been there, it wasn't all that difficult to picture as I was reading.

I was hooked on Farrah and Blake's banter from very early on but the romance is a bit more slow-burn as they spend a lot of time getting to know each other as friends first while exploring the gorgeous Shanghai/China setting. There was an instant physical attraction between them but I thought their romance developed very organically and it helped me feel even more invested in their relationship by the time they actually got together. Their chemistry was absolute F-I-R-E❤️‍🔥and although at times the romance did get a bit cheesy, their love for each other almost felt like a tangible thing because it was so raw (I know, THAT also sounds really cheesy but it's true, I don't know what to say)! I found myself really relating to both of them throughout the read as they not only tried to find themselves in this foreign setting but also in starting a relationship together. That said, I wished we got a little more character development, especially for Farrah. I was kind of surprised that Blake got a lot more growth in this story but as I also related more to his character, it made it that much easier to empathise and sympathise with his situation. I hated his home situation and his family and ex-girlfriend were... *sucks teeth* ... just... not. I especially hated how Blake's dad had such toxic views of his son for giving up his football career (though not atypical of football dads), but I loved watching Blake find confidence in himself and in his ideas, thanks in part to Farrah's belief in him.

Aside from the romance, I really loved this group of friends! The closeness and fast bond that comes from being in a new place where you don't know anyone was written really well but also very realistically. They were really like a small family and it was so heartwarming to see how they'd support each other despite many of them also being from very different backgrounds. This friendship group and their many shenanigans added to my enjoyment of the story! I'm curious to see where life leads these friends in the second book set five years later and who will still be around down the line.
