A Modern Take for Modern Times

A Modern Take for Modern Times
Raise your hand if Covid is stressing you out? “Out of the Darkness” is one of the first books I’ve come across dedicated to the effects of this wide spread disease, and it was a relief to read about. It felt good to hear stories that match the depression, hope and fear that comes w/ the pandemic. Most stories are short reads, perfect for a bus ride or read while waiting to vote. The author, Chris Baum, has some creative ideas that help cool off the hot dumpster fire that is the modern stress of our times. Check out “Out of the Darkness” if you’re looking to read about stories related to today’s struggles. Hopefully they’ll make you feel just a bit better about today.

What a great collection! I thought they were very deep and meaningful! They were fantastic and touched me deeply! I saw several low reviews, but don't let them deter you! This a fantastic read dealing with very relevant issues! A must read!

I really liked this author's writing style and he was especially poignant in those fictional stories so closely related to real life experiences. My favorites were...'Boundless Travel', 'Cemetery', 'Little Island', 'Superfluous', 'Soldier' and 'Hiding Places'. I was not so enamored of the 'futuristic' tales. Also, the proofing/editing is lacking...several missing words, punctuation and incorrect word usage i.e. 'beckoning' not beaconing; 'scarce' not scares. But the one proofing error which definitely needs correcting was in 'Dream Big' because it interrupts the flow of the story, confusing the reader. This author has great potential and at his best, his tales are beautifully written. But I recommend having someone proof/edit his manuscript and upload a new version.

I was given this book for free to read and review. This is supposed to be a collection of short stories but it’s more of an essay than anything else. The plot development about the characters dealing with Covid-19 felt rushed and lacks a certain something that left me unsatisfied or wanting more. The stories has great potential if the author focus on the characters.

I was very excited to read this collection at first, but I honestly have to say, many of the micro fiction stories feel incredibly flawed. Many feel incomplete or like they lack purpose, and it's surprising that the first two are some of the worst ones, since I expected they'd put their best work first. The first one is literally just a quarantine summary, and the second is follows a woman hit by a drunk driver through events that can only be described as feeling pointless. Both feel like straight-up garbage writing to me (no offense). The sci-fi/fantasy stories were lackluster, and sometimes the switch between realist and fantasy stories was a little jarring. The prose's quality is shifty at best. I did somewhat like a few stories though, such as "An Old Man's Thoughts" and "Escape," along with "Class." The poetry can be somewhat okay, but it's generally the same quality as the flash fics. The novelette at the end was better written; the characters got annoying at times and I didn't appreciate them using the word "spastic," but I enjoyed it overall.

While the author describes this collection as one of “stories”, it would be more appropriately described as an assortment of fragments in a writer’s notebook. It includes snippets of sketches, musings, daydreams and even poetry, rather than fully developed pieces held together by some over-arching theme or style. Sometimes it’s homely, sometimes it’s futuristic, sometimes it’s creepy, sometimes it’s satiric. Baum has imagination aplenty but most of these random jottings seem unfinished and inconclusive. He does include a novelette, Hiding Place, which has a beginning, a middle, and an end. But even here the writing is too superficial to be believable. Its characterizations are one-dimensional and its plot devices are too transparently fake. Overall Out of Darkness remains sketchy and unsatisfying.

I got a free copy of this book via Voracious Reader Only in exchange for an honest review.

This was an interesting read. It took on some more of the real everyday fiction with a little fantasy fiction thrown in. I like how it had a little of everything, short fiction, poems, flash fiction, and a novella. Overall it was a good read.
