BELIEVE HIM, BETRAY HER

1998: Six-year-old Bea doesn’t want a sister but everything changes when Lo is born early. Small and frail, Lo needs someone to look out for her. Having a sister is a promise, Mom says—one Bea’s determined not to break.

2011: A car wreck, their parents dead. Lo would’ve died too if not for Lev Warren, the charismatic leader of The Unity Project. He’s going to change the world and after he saves Lo’s life, Bea wants to commit to his extraordinary calling. Lev promises a place for the girls in the project, where no harm will ever come to them again . . . if Bea proves herself to him first.

2017: Lo doesn’t know why Bea abandoned her for The Unity Project after the accident, but she never forgot what Bea said the last time they spoke: We’ll see each other again. Six years later, Lo is invited to witness the group’s workings, meet with Lev, and—she hopes—finally reconnect with her sister. But Bea is long gone, and the only one who seems to understand the depths of this betrayal is Lev. If it’s family Lo wants, he can make her a new promise . . . if she proves herself to him first.

Powerful, suspenseful and heartbreaking,
The Project follows two sisters who fall prey to the same cult leaderand their desperate fight back to one another.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—A young woman's determination to reveal the truth behind an apparent cult exposes a more complicated look at doubt and belief than she could have imagined. Lo Denham barely survived the car accident that killed her parents. Her sister, Bea, credits her miraculous recovery to Lev Warren, leader of the Unity Project, an outwardly innocuous religious group that performs acts of service and community outreach. Bea gives up everything to join them. Years after being abandoned by her sister, Lo—who works as an assistant at an investigative magazine—follows in her path, desperate to uncover the truth behind the Project and to save her sister. With promises of atonement, redemption, and salvation, Lev's message begins to penetrate Lo's skepticism—how far will she go to get the real story? And once she discovers it, can she bear what it may reveal? Masterfully written and pulling no punches, the narrative moves back and forth in time, showing events from both Bea and Lo's perspectives. Summers creates and sustains almost unbearable tension, exploring sacrifice, loss, forgiveness, miracles, surrender, grief, and lies. The unflinching look at Bea and Lo's desperation is devastating, especially as both chase healing and salvation to counteract emptiness and loss. Readers will question the truth and everyone's motivations in this world full of manipulation and mind games. Secondary characters are of various races; Bea and Lo are described only as having brown hair. VERDICT A gripping, flawless psychological thriller ready to leave readers shattered.—Amanda MacGregor, Parkview Elem. Sch., Rosemount, MN

How far would you go to find your loved one?
I fell in love with their suspense with Sadie, HAD to read Cracked Up To Be and just itched to dig into The Project. All I knew going in was that there was a journalist and a cult, that's it and I didn't want to know more. I enjoy the analysis of relationships in their books. Both with Sadie and The Project it's with sisters and Cracked Up To Be is friends. Could not recommend these three books enough.

“Having a sister is a promise no one but the two of you can make-and no one but the two of you can break.”

The Project by Courtney Summer was published in Feb of 2021 by Wednesday books. Trigger warnings for suicide, cults, physical deformities, physical abuse, and parent death.

Never in my life have I read relationships about sisters that have felt more really than reading Courtney Summers books. I went into this book not knowing more than this was a book about sisters where one sister is a member of a cult and the other sister is trying to figure out how to get her out of it.

I felt like all of the main characters in this book were crafted so well and The Unity Project itself felt so real. I felt like Bea and Lo’s relationship was laid out so well to show how much they mean to each other from page one. When we start seeing the parts of Bea’s story where Lev starts showing up it is so obvious to the reader in my opinion how much of a manipulator this person is.

I felt like the way that the “cult” was handled was very true to what you read about some of the more well know cults in recent years. The charasmatic man who is recieving visions from God and who wants to pull their followers away from the world. This part of the story just really pulled me in and had me speaking out to the characters that I didn’t think Lev was all he seemed.

Lo as a character took such a big turn through out the whole story that was so refreshing to see. I thought that the way her feelings and thoughts about the unity project changed as she was researching them made complete sense to the story.

I think if you like stories like The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni I think you will enjoy this book as well.

I gave this book 5 stars and will be reading more by this author very soon.

Well, I didn’t realize this is mostly a ya novel. They have certainly changed since 1968-1971 when I was in high school. Then, I was astounded by A Separate Peace. This is a whole other animal! The writing style here is intriguing as it keeps the reader involved by switching time periods and points of view. We get to know Bea and Lo pretty well while Lev remains an enigma until the end. It’s a story of many really damaged people.
Leaving religion completely out of the equation, I feel it might have improved the book if some questions had remained unanswered. It was tied up into a neat knot at the end. And people like these rarely end up in such neat packages. Just a thought. I mean, look at Phineas and Gene!! 😉

After reading SADIE I knew I wanted to read the next release by Courtney Summers... as soon as I heard THE PROJECT was coming out, I was thrilled. I love reading about cults, mystery, danger, and psychological storylines.

I was not disappointed.

Summers did a fantastic job writing the story to keep you consistently guessing what might be going on and who we should be keeping a closer eye on. I love the character development, the dual POV, and the feeling of unease as I am reading the book. I felt like this book would be great for a mini series.

I will most definitely be keeping an eye out for any more of her future releases and may start reading more of her older works.

5 stars.

Deep Breath! That’s what I told myself at the end of this book. I put the book down, stared at the wall for a bit and took some very deep breaths. The ease with which this book gets under your skin makes this a must-read recommendation from me!

You know how they say it’s a fine line between love and hate? I think that fine line applies to religions and cults as well.

This book. This book! I thought when I got this book that it was going to be a thriller. I wouldn’t really call it that. It’s more of a mystery with a few thrillerish moments thrown in. But I really don’t want to get stuck in the details of which category it fits in to. I’d rather just focus on how I could not put this book down and had to read it in 24 hours. I had to know! Had to know what was really happening!

The author did such a good job of writing this story that you can’t tell if The Unity Project is a religious following made up of love and light, friends and family or if it is a cult who brainwashes its followers and doesn’t allow them to leave.

Lo’s sister Bea has become a member of The Unity Project after a tragic family loss. Lo does everything she can to find Bea for years, thinking that she is being kept against her will within The Project. Lo begins to write a story about The Project to show that they are a cult. She is granted inside access for interviews with the leader, Lev, as he claims he has nothing to hide and wants to show the world that there is a better way. What she finds is not what she expected.

Following in Lo and Bea’s footsteps, I was sucked into this world of love, family, grief, sadness, forgiveness, acceptance and faith. The feelings of giving yourself to a higher power and having faith in the unseen that are the foundations of religious practices. How do you know if/when it has gone too far? These themes explored in this mystery are gut-wrenching at times. Even now, days later, I’m overwhelmed by the emotions from this story.

The characters jumped off the page for me. Each main character was so well-written, it feels like I have known them for years. At the same time, there were a few holes in the story and focuses on things that didn’t seem that important. These issues caused me to rate the book as a 4. A little more clarity in some situations would have made a couple of places less confusing. Some parts of the life of Lo were skipped over completely and it seems that there could have been a chapter or two spent on the years in between the last time she saw Bea and the time she is working at the paper. Just for continuity. These aren’t huge issues but I feel they would have made for a more well-rounded story.

The way charismatic people can have such profound effects on those that have suffered loss, tragedy or abuse is astounding on the one hand and very, very scary on the other.

I would urge readers of emotion-filled dramas, mysteries and thrillers alike to take grab this book and clear your schedule!

Courtney Summers is my favorite author. She has a way of making you feel such complex and complicated emotions that I cannot properly put into words. You just have to read them to understand. I have been fascinated with crime stories and cults for a long time, largely because I cannot fathom how anyone could just be a part of that willingly. Courtney makes you feel it. She makes you see just how easily someone could fall pray to it brilliantly. Even as I was reading I felt myself being masterfully drawn into The Unity Project, but I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll just say this. Please read this book. And while you’re at it, read her other ones as well.

The story has an amazimg plot, how it evolves you around this cult that you know it has to be bad, right? Then why are they such good persons and how can they make miracles and help a lot of people? Maybe they are not bad, maybe they can help.
It really makes you wonder who to believe and how this organizations works with your mind.

I wish it was longer! Id love to know how was Lev's point of view. More insight about cults! I hope the author explores more about this topic.

Still crying about the end and the amazing plottwist

I was interested in this due to the focus on cults. Just wow. It stayed with me well after I finished - a careful and considerate look at religion and spirituality with fully formed characters who are as strong willed as they are blindsided. I would definitely recommend.

Well, this crash-landed so hard that it totally made me question if I want to pick up another book by Courtney Summers, and that says a lot because every book I read so far was really good in its own way. But this? WTF happened?? If you're looking for a book surrounding a cult bc you are interested in reading how a whole community can blindly follow a false prophet, the manipulation behind it and expect an intriguing thriller where the protagonist fights him with tooth and nail, this isn't the book you're looking for. The blurb suggests that this could be two sisters pitted against each other by a manipulative and charismatic cult leader, but trust me - there's nothing any close happening to that. In fact, it's just underwhelming and disappointing bc for at least 80% of the book, nothing really happens. The ending is rushed, the main character is flat, the antagonist is weak. The End.
