From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-On the small dwarf planet of Dohrsar, Sonara is the illegitimate daughter of the queen. One day her brother and best friend, Soahm, is abducted by a mysterious spaceship. With Sonara as the only witness, the queen doesn't believe Sonara's story, and wrongfully sentences Sonara to death for killing Soahm. Sonara comes back from the dead as a Shadowblood with the newfound power to sense others' emotions and auras. She joins a ragtag group of Shadowblood outlaws who embark on a quest to prevent a powerful rock called Antheon from getting into the wrong hands. Their mission is thwarted, however, when Sonara spots the same spaceship that abducted Soahm. Consumed with finding him, she interrogates and subsequently kills Karr, a member of the ship's crew. This sets off a chain of events that results in many Dohrsarans being imprisoned and forced to mine Antheon. Karr is reborn as a Shadowblood and joins forces with Sonara and her friends to free the Dohrsarans. Most of the characters are purposely unlikable, albeit three-dimensional. Throughout, Sonara is referred to as the Devil, although her unremarkable powers will leave readers perplexed about the nickname and her notoriety. The betrayals and plot twists at the end fail to redeem the novel from the slow-moving plot. Sonara's and Karr's ethnicities are not stated. VERDICT With a convoluted plot that is slow to unfold, this story is unlikely to motivate readers to read to the end.-Candyce Pruitt-Goddardα(c) Copyright 2011. I loved this book! I was very excited to read it when I first heard about it and I’m so glad that I enjoyed it so much. It did not disappoint! The beginning is full of action and tension that keeps you reading and asking questions. The characters are great and you want to root for them the whole time. I thought the setting was so well done, the descriptions of the landscapes are captivating and add another layer to the book. The mix of fantasy and sci-fi was really cool! Overall, the story was fast-paced with a great cast of characters and wonderful writing! It was a fun read!

Magic, space, and mayhem come together in this story about the bastard daughter of a queen who is falsely accused of killing her brother when he was actually abducted by a spaceship and is left to die... only she has come back alive and is now gifted with magic powers that let her taste and feel other people’s emotions. Sonara was left for dead 10 years ago but now she has become the Devil of the Deadlands, a thief with demon-like powers. She continues to search for her brother, doing whatever it takes to get her one step closer to bringing him home. When a job goes terribly wrong Sonara is forced to work with an ex lover, a princess, and a cleric in order to pay her debts but along the way she runs into another spaceship... exactly like the one that stole her brother. Things get out of hand when her own best friend is stolen and the member she kidnapped has a similar aura to her brother... he knows something but he won’t tell her. Then she finds herself in the middle of a much larger plot involving the doom of her planet. Sonara will have to uncover dark secrets, stop evil plots, and find a way to save the planet. definitely liked Sonara the best out of all the characters, she just felt so much better fleshed out compared to everyone else. Karr was the second POV we get to read from and okays the Wanderer with with Sonara’s brother’s aura on him. This was a surprising read for me, I definitely was not expecting the whole sci-fi space ship and alien travelers plots to play into this story about a outcast daughter turned thief on the hunt for her brother. Overall an okay read and definitely worth checking out for anyone who is a fan of sci-fi and fantasy stories since this is pretty interesting blend of both.

Blood Metal Bone is an epic fantasy sci-fi that takes place in a short period of time for such a big book. It was suspenseful, had lot of action, several plot twists, some really amazing shockers I didn't see coming, and strong characters. There are lots of characters, locations, and time periods to keep track of. I was confused initially, but once I got engrossed into the novel, it all made sense. There is a reference list in the front of the book to explain characters and locations. I actually did not need to refer to it surprisingly. Character building was done very well for the troupe of main characters. I got a great sense of who they are. This book has amazing world building on the most grandiose scale. Breath taking and imaginative. And the names of everything is interesting. Carcass Coast, Crooked Cove, Deadlands, Gunshot Bluff. Very creative.

The unique magic was interesting. I like how each character employed something different. The sci-fi elements integrated well with the fantasy. And it was funny how the planet people described the human elements that they didn't have knowledge or names of. A bit of comic relief. The found family trope and family bonds was executed well. Although, I didn't understand why the main characters kept allying with someone that they know deceives all the time. IRL eventually that person would be cut off, family or no family. Also, one pivotal character disappeared in the midst of action and was never talked about again until the end. And I am still reeling from the beginning scene of Sonara's death events and what happened to Soahm. Utterly shocking. Can't stop thinking about it.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Definitely recommend.

This is a Young Adult novel that has a marvelous venture into the fantasy/Science Fiction genre. I loved this book. It is the perfect combination of fantasy and science fiction together into one fantastic read. The charcters are all richly drawn to the story . I can honestly say I was unable to part with this book until it was completed. The author artfully crafted so much action that you will be compelled to keep turning pages, lose sleep and tell all your friends.

The creation of Sonora is brilliant She is a outcast living outside her society surviving any way she can. Her beloved Brother taken from the earth she never stops seeking a way to find him. Her family blames her and cast her out. She finds a rowdy gang of thieves to be part of to steal to survive. I loved her tenacity to reinvent herself in spite of her hateful family. She finds she has magical powers and uses her powers for her survival. Her magic proves useful and she works to steal from the King, is jailed and freed by her gang and their amazing dragon. She is accepted in her band of thieves and good at her craft.. She is simply a amazing charcters. This was such a fun read I wish it was not a stand alone. Well done to the author .

Thank you to Net Galley and to the publisher. A fantastic read I highly recommend.

I DNF this book. I have read Cumming’s books in the past when she co-authored with Sasha and those books were okay. When I started this book, it was great until the writing wasn’t it for me and there was way too much sci-fi than needed. I was expecting this to be a fantasy story and picked it up because it said it was perfect for fans of Throne of Glass but was disappointed. It also could have been my mood during the time I was reading it because currently, I’m into fantasy romance or just romance. But it can also mean that the author’s writing is just not it for me. Don’t let me dnf discourage you to read this book because it might be wonderful for you.
