Falcon's Shadow: A Novel of the Knights of Malta (the Siege of Malta Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 44 ratings

The ghosts of war leave no footprints. When legendary Ottoman seaman Dragut Raїs attacked the Maltese islands in 1551, his army left Gozo a smoking ruin emptied of its entire population. Among the five thousand carried into slavery is Augustine Montesa, father of Domenicus and Katrina.

Wounded and broken, Domenicus vows to find his father, even if it means abandoning Angelica, his betrothed. Armed with only a topaz to serve as ransom, he sets out on a journey that sees him forcibly recruited from the streets of Europe and thrown into the frontline. On Malta, Katrina struggles to find work after the Grand Master has her publicly flogged for speaking out against him. When at last, she stumbles upon a promising position, all is not as it seems. Her job forces her to confront a terrible truth—one that may prove disastrous for Robert, the man she loves.

Hundreds of leagues to the east in Istanbul, Demir, son of a wealthy Turkish bey, works hard to become an imperial Ottoman horseman, despite having to endure the cruelty of his father and half-brother. Life takes an unexpected turn the moment Demir encounters a young woman, stolen from Malta, brought into the household as another of his father’s servants.

Falcon’s Shadow sweeps from quarry pits to sprawling estates, tumultuous seas to creaking gallows, the dungeons beneath the bishop’s palace to the open decks of warships. Fates will collide at the Battle of Djerba, a momentous clash which unites lost kin, only to tear them apart once more.

Review

From the desperation of the slave market to the horrors of the battlefield, Falcon's Shadow by Marthese Fenech is the evocative story of one family who is torn apart by war, ambition and an appalling act of revenge. What a story! Falcon's Shadow is an emotional, tear-jerkingly brilliant novel that left me gasping for breath and begging for more. This is the kind of book that demands your attention from the opening sentence until the last full stop. It is a story of terrible suffering, but it is also one of desperate hope. Fenech has captured the very essences of this era. The hours of research that have so painstakingly gone into this book has to be commended. This novel is what Historical Fiction is all about. It is, in all ways, an absolute success. Falcon's Shadow by Marthese Fenech is a beautifully compelling, and emotional read.
I Highly Recommend.

Marthese Fenech is the bestselling author of a historical saga set in sixteenth-century Malta and Istanbul. She has also written an award-winning script based on her Siege of Malta trilogy.

Research for her Siege of Malta trilogy has taken her to the ancient streets her characters roamed, the fortresses they defended, the seas they sailed, and the dungeons they escaped. Obstinate curiosity has led her to sixty-five countries across six continents.

She does her best plot-weaving while hiking mountain trails, wandering local markets, paddle boarding cliff-sheltered bays, and sitting at home with her Siberian husky curled at her feet.

What a marvelous sequel to the first in this series!! Marthese Fenech is a master at creating complex characters woven together amid plot twists and against backdrops of vivid imagery set in Malta, Istanbul and the high seas. The depth of her research shines through the details she conveys, yet don't clutter the stories that sweep readers (me!) into another world during the age of the Knights on Malta. Can't wait to read more!!

If you love historical fiction, beautiful writing and wonderful characters, you should read Falcon’s Shadow. Mar Fenech’s writing will transport you back over 400 years to the island of Malta in the midst of the Great Siege. You’ll spend time in sixteenth-century Istanbul too. People who enjoy battle scenes will particularly enjoy this book, but the book is so much more because of the characters and their intertwining stories. I particularly love Demir who is introduced in this book as a young boy.

Although I read Eight Pointed Cross several years ago (and listened to the audio this past year in preparation for Falcon’s Shadow), I don’t believe it’s a requirement to read this sequel. Many of the characters are the same, but some are new. More importantly the books are separated by many years with a natural ending and beginning between.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compulsive read! Expertly researched

Falcon’s Shadow begins with a punch that leaves you breathless.

As with its predecessor, Falcon’s Shadow is clearly painstakingly researched. Every little detail feels authentic and Fenech does not shy away from the gory details of life before sanitation.

Part of what makes it feel so real is the dialogue. Unlike a lot of historical fiction that employs a formal speech pattern to suggest antiquity, this trilogy allows its characters to talk in a way that balances anachronism with realism. It’s extremely compelling.

Fenech excels at a number of different narrative facets, but for me, I was particularly engrossed by three aspects. The first is her characters: the good, bad, and morally gray are all equally interesting. The second is the engrossing battle scenes. The third is the deep critique of systematic power structures and how they affect even those who try to distance themselves.

If you enjoy impressively researched history, realistic characters for whom you root and despair, and a story that dries out your eyes from compulsive reading, get Falcon’s Shadow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping saga.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading Falcon's Shadow. This is the 2nd book in a trilogy. The first book, also gripping is titled Eight Pointed Cross.
My goodness... leaves the reader utterly gasping for air as the protagonists battle their way through what intrigue throws their way. Villains and heroes, saints and sinners, war and more war, lost and found love. Never a dull moment. And then, just as the reader reaches an important climax and turn of events the book ends! What!! No more!!
Can't wait for the third book. The grand finale is much anticipated.
Huge well done Marthese Fenech. The wait was well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It took me on the most amazing adventure. Everyone needs to go.

The first book Eight Pointed Cross was an excellent novel, it was the base to get me to the Falcon’s Shadow. It was an amazing read that left me wanting more. When The Falcon’s Shadow was released it exceeded what I was expecting, a totally new concept. A whole new adventure with so many twists and turns I was fooled at every turn. This novel took me to so many places, so many adventures, so many ups and downs, it is so well written. Putting down this book was almost impossible, I kept wanting to know what was next, it pulled me in. In fact on many occasions as I was reading I would ask myself, “ what is in this author’s mind, how does she think, where does she come up with all of this?” I cannot praise this novel and author enough for the amazing adventure I went on.
