Mark of the Wicked Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

A young witch tries to unravel the mystery of who is framing her for dark magic in Georgia Bowers' creepy YA debut fantasy, Mark of the Wicked.

Magic always leaves its mark.

All her life, Matilda has been told one thing about her magic: You use only when necessary. But Matilda isn't interested in being a good witch. She wants revenge and popularity, and to live her life free of consequences, free of the scars that dark magic leaves on her face as a reminder of her misdeeds.

When a spell goes awry and the new boy at school catches her in the act, Matilda thinks her secret might be out. But far from being afraid, Oliver already knows about her magic - and he wants to learn more. As Oliver and Matilda grow closer, bizarre things begin to happen: Animals show up with their throats slashed and odd markings carved into their bodies, a young girl dies mysteriously, and everyone blames Matilda. But she isn’t responsible — at least, not that she can remember. As her magic begins to spin out of control, Matilda must decide for herself what makes a good witch, and discover the truth...before anyone else turns up dead.

"[A] breathlessly told,
consuming portrait of a witch’s relationship with loneliness and power... protagonists are elaborately drawn, and the novel’s eerie atmosphere lingers."Publishers Weekly

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-When 16-year-old Matilda says that her hometown is only interesting at Halloween, she's leaving out some details: Gravewick's haunted "witching well," the annual festival that honors the woman who haunts the well; Gravewick's various and active witch families and covens; and the love and revenge spells Matilda has been casting on her unknowing classmates. But even though Matilda is a powerful young witch from a strong witch family, she has a lot to learn, and what she doesn't know, including the unintended consequences of her more mean-spirited spells, have come back to haunt her. As Matilda falls for handsome Oliver, strange things start happening all around her-blackouts, dead animals around town, her old best friend stalking her, and even the murder of a classmate-and Matilda is the top suspect. While the teen works to clear her name, she must navigate her own family's fraught dynamics. It's only when Matilda connects with the past and accepts the power of a coven that balance is restored. Buffy the Vampire Slayer enthusiasts will enjoy Bowers's ability to imagine the tension that might arise when ancient rules and traditions meet the realities of the contemporary world. VERDICT An especially perfect read for fans of Lily Anderson's Undead Girl Gone.Jennifer Miskec, Longwood Univ., Farmville, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Georgia Bowers lives in Bedford, a small market town in England. When it was time to decide what to do with her life, she was obsessed with two things: books and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It seemed sensible to follow in the brogued footsteps of Rupert Giles, so she became a librarian, though sadly not the demon fighting kind. But there's still time.

Ever since her mum told her that witches used to meet in the woods near their village she has been obsessed with witchcraft and the paranormal. When she was a teenager, a weekly habit of Point Horrors satisfied her thirst for chilling tales before she moved on to reading Stephen King. These days she likes to give her nerves a break every now and then with a good YA romance.

After completing a course in writing YA fiction she was a winner in the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Undiscovered Voices. Since then she has dabbled with stories of chosen ones and ghostly best friends until she conjured up the magical ingredients for her debut novel, Mark of the Wicked.

A brilliant young adult fantasy debut

A brilliant young adult fantasy debut
The author did an excellent job with the concept of “Mark of the Wicked. ” The story is unique for the genre and one which felt fresh. I couldn’t put the book down right from the first chapter because of how unique Matilda’s storyline was. The story got intense as Matilda finds out about the carcasses from the police. What follows is how the author takes us on a wild ride as Matilda investigates who is framing her for the murders. The author also includes some shocking deaths that I honestly did not see coming, leading to an exciting climax on Halloween. Moreover, the author also wrote the characters brilliantly. I’ll only mention that many people were not who they seemed. Matilda is great in the lead, and I felt she was the perfect protagonist for the role. I also thought Ashley stood out even though she doesn’t appear much. Likewise, even Erin was fun to read. However, one of my highlights was Matilda’s friendship with Oliver and the scenes where they go to the party or celebrate her birthday. Moreover, initially, I felt the story staggered a bit from the plot with Matilda and Oliver’s private moments. However, later I realize why the author chose to do this, and the two left me speechless. I’m not giving away spoilers, but their twists are equally entertaining as what happens with the plot. This story is rare because the characters and storyline were similarly intense, and I loved reading all aspects.Overall, “Mark of the Wicked” is a brilliant young adult fantasy with a touch of romance and murder mystery and a perfect book to pick up for Halloween.

I had no idea what I was getting into with this book, but I’m so glad I requested a review copy! MARK OF THE WICKED is enthralling, impossible to put down, and filled with the types of characters that are so complex, you don’t know whether to love them or hate them. I started off not much liking Matilda. She uses her magic to harm those she considers her enemies. The only problem is, if she harms someone with magic, she is scarred for life; their name carved into her face. But Matilda has learned how to hide her scars from everyone, so at the outset, it seems like she suffers no consequences for her actions. She’s angry, spiteful, and nearly impossible to sympathize with. At first.

When she meets Oliver, though, we get to see a side to Matilda that was missing — the reasons for the things she does. She reveals her deeper fears and her darker pain that she resorts to magic to help her cope, the way an alcoholic turns to booze to numb the pain. But there is something more sinister than Matilda afoot, with grisly animal deaths that somehow keep pointing to Matilda. But with her mother acting suspicious, her grandmother not having spoken in three years, and Matilda’s blackouts, anything is possible.

Plot
MARK OF THE WICKED is superbly plotted, with intertwining plots. Debut author, Georgia Bowers, creates intrigue with her storytelling. The pacing is perfection. Set in a small town in England, with a dark history, similar to that of Salem, Massachusetts in the states, her backdrop comes alive, becoming a part of the story as much as the characters.

The Characters
Speaking of characters, for me anyway, the ability to create an antihero like Matilda, and make us root for her the way we rooted for Walter White in the first few season of Breaking Bad, is a rare talent and Bowers does it masterfully. Supporting characters, like Matilda’s classmates, Erin, Oliver, her mother, and grandmother, are more than just cardboard cutouts and stereotypes. It would have been easy for the author to make someone like Ashley a less than sympathetic character, but even she has more depth than just the class queen bee.

Top Five Things I Loved About MARK OF THE WICKED
1. Magic. The magical world building is amazing and really adds to the plot and character development.

2. Characters. Their depth and complexity made this a book I couldn’t put down.

3. Plot. The story is unforgettable, with a number of twists and turns that made this a book I couldn’t put down.

4. Redemption. Matilda’s character arc is the opposite of Breaking Bad as she learns some brutal, valuable lessons about life, love, and what it means to be a good citizen.

5. Storytelling. The author does an amazing job of weaving in threads that stick with you, gnawing in your brain, that keeps you reading to find out what they mean.

Bottom Line
A stellar debut novel by an author I cannot wait to read more from.

Matilda had no interest in being a good witch. She even had a spell in her pocket for when she caused another person harm, so she could cover up the mark that would etch itself into her body, as a reminder.

But sometimes causing others harm has a consequence that she could have never dreamed of, it attracts the wrong kind straight to her. Will she be able to step up and trust a coven to help her out or will her fear lose her family their power for good?

This was a really interesting take on witches and power. I came to love the idea of the mark throughout the course of this novel. It felt so different from anything I have ever read before and wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. It definitely fits the spooky vibe too. If you’re a fan of witchy magic be sure to pick this book up.

Matilda, a witch, still in high school likes to play pranks or more like getting revenge on the people she doesn’t like by using magic on them. When Matilda uses her magic for revenge it leaves its mark on her.

Strange things are starting to happen around town like animals are turning up dead with Matilda’s name carved on their bodies. Matilda did not kill these animals. She only plays pranks on people, harmless really. Yeah, right.

But when she keeps passing or blacking out she has no idea what she is doing during these times. Can she be using her magic in some way to kill these animals without her knowledge? Did Matilda kill all those animals herself? If not who did? Or is someone using magic and blaming Matilda by covering their tracks with magic? Can Matilda figure out what is going on before the next death?

Matilda was a character that was hard to like. She seemed a little selfish to me on the surface. But I think that there was more to her than what was on top. I think Matilda’s wanting revenge came from deep inside. I think that deep down that she is a good person. I think if anyone ever took the time to get to know her like Oliver did then they would see a different person. I also think that if anyone ever did show her any kind of kindness, friendship or love then she would start to use a different kind of magic. She would let the light shine through instead of the darkness, hopefully.

Mark of the Wicked is a fun sweet magical read that held my attention from the first page until the last. It had just the right amount of mystery and suspense to keep those pages turning.

I would recommend Mark of the Wicked to anyone who likes witches and magically fun reads. One-click your copy of Mark of the Wicked today for a great magical adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously spooky stuff!

Bought this for my teenage granddaughters, had a pre-read and was impressed by the stylish writing. I expected the spookiness but not the serious message carried by the gripping plot and utterly believable characters and relationships. Strong stuff, not for the squeamish - and, yes, the teen readers thought so too!

Darker than I thought it was going to be, with just the right amount of teen drama. I was taken on a journey into a new witchy world, unique from many others I've read about over the years; plus I was genuinely surprised when wicked Tilly was revealed.
