Redway Acres: Book 6 - Emmalee Kindle Edition
The Redway Acres saga continues with book six. A look back to the early life of Emmalee Knightly in the late 18th century.
Emmalee, the middle daughter of an affluent family, lives with her controlling parents on the North Norfolk coast. She, along with her two sisters, is expected to marry well. To that end, the family often travels to their London home for the social season. Emmalee has long believed in her destiny- an arranged marriage to David Ackley, the youngest son of the Earl of Aysthill. However, to Emmalee’s horror, during their much-anticipated first meeting, she discovers that David desires someone else.
Despite the cloud of controversy hanging over them, the couple find themselves forced into a marriage of convenience, and David’s reaction to his perceived misfortune results in far-reaching consequences for his family and friends. Meanwhile, a pregnancy, an accident, and an untimely death thrust Emmalee into the demanding role of Countess of Aysthill, to which she rises with dauntless spirit. Emmalee dotes on her two sons, William and Nathaniel, who invoke differing affections from their father.
The hope that sustains Emmalee is that time will heal the breach her marriage suffered even before she spoke her vows. But just as the wound finally begins to mend, a ghost from the past returns.

About the author

Trish Butler is the author of the Historical Fiction saga, Redway Acres which is set in the east of England. Also, a contemporary detective series based in the fictional New Jersey town of Rockmond.
Born in Norwich, in the county of Norfolk, England, Trish moved to Connecticut in the US, in 1999. Her daughter was born there two years later, and is on the autism spectrum.
Redway Acres, which Trish calls Pride & Prejudice with horses and a healthy dollop of feminism, is set during the early 1800s in Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, UK, an area that she knows well. Over the past more than twenty years, Trish has got to know the tri-state area well too, and hopefully enough American English terms that make her contemporary mystery book sound authentic.
Trish always wanted to write a book and at age fifty, finally realized that dream. There are now six main books and one companion in the Redway series, and so far, one book has been published of her Rockmond Mysteries.
Read her blog about her process, The Road to Redway; the Redway Acres saga; Rockmond Mysteries; excerpts, poetry and her characters, on her website.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2025Each time I read a book in this series I think they are the best and Emmalee did not disappoint! I love finding out more and more about my favorite characters each time. This one had so many secrets to reveal and I cannot wait to read the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2020This was my first foray into this genre, and it went surprisingly well! I understand this is the sixth book in the series but apparently a prequel to the others, so I feel like it was the right choice to start with.
The characters were all showstoppers. I was impressed that the author could create so many distinct, distinguishable characters and make them all full of life and authenticity. If I had to pick favorites, I really liked Nathaniel Ackley, Helena, and Worthington. Hats off to the author for this incredible achievement.
However the abundance of characters created a double-edged sword. While the first slate of major characters strained my ability to keep track of them, I was able to do so relatively well. Then all these characters began to marry, have children, die, re-marry, have more children, have illegitimate children, and then grandchildren, and honestly in the last 25% of the book I get quite lost in regards to some characters. It got to the point where it felt like I should have been keeping family trees outlined somewhere!
And that passage of time also threw me for a loop. I was expecting a smaller scope when I started this book, but before I knew it we were three or four generations deep and 40 years past the starting date. I guess I just wasn’t prepared for that long of a timeline, so that’s on me.
As for the plot itself, it was excellent. I was shocked with how quickly it sucked me in and how often I was left saying “Seriously, just 5 more minutes of reading. I mean it this time.” Now the story did eventually begin to fizzle for me, as we had yet another innocent virgin become pregnant the first time she has sex or yet another sudden death that conveniently opens the door for childhood sweethearts to wed (but oh no, one of them has already married elsewhere!). But as I said in the beginning, this is decidedly not my preferred genre, and I reckon fans of the genre would continue to love the twists and turns of this tale long past the point I grew tired of them.
I’m giving this 5 stars because, while the excitement and intrigue eventually faded for me, it held my attention far longer than I expected and introduced me to a marvelous cast of characters. Fans of the genre will eat this up and probably rush to get the other books in the series, and I recommend they do so!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2021I have been immersed in this series for weeks now and was so happy to receive a copy of Book #6 - Emmalee, from the author, Trish Butler, in a contest just as I finished the previous book! Being a prequel to the whole Redway Acres story, it went back in time to give us a lot more information about the generation of the families that the characters we have grown to love and hate so far in the series came from.
The central character in Book #6 is Emmalee, but there is so much intermingling of characters that you learn a lot more about how they all became the people they are - or aren’t.... There are certainly a few surprises!!
Even though it is a prequel this book brings you all the way up in time to the “present” in the series. The theme of male dominance over women and the strength of women to defy this is still front and center in this story and that is one of the reasons I am so hooked on the series!!
I am anxious to see who’s story the author tells us next!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2020Trish Butler’s Redway Acres – Book 6- Emmalee is a tour-de-force in the grand tradition of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. It’s the story of Emmalee Knightly, born in the 1700s to a lesser noble family in England. Her father forces Emmalee into a loveless marriage with David Ackley, scion of the Earl of Aysthill, as a means of advancing the importance of his own family. The book follows Emalee’s life, chronicling the trials and tribulations of her marriage with David.
But there’s so much more. The book also delves deeply into the lives of Emmalee’s many friends and acquaintances, in great detail for many of them. All of the characters are richly drawn; noble, fallible and sometimes downright degenerate in turn–that is to say, human to a fault. If I had to criticize the novel, I think it’s somewhat too long, and at times goes off on tangents about the secondary characters, leaving the reader wanting to get back to Emmalee’s story. The setting is impeccably researched, immersing the reader in the period. This is a book to lose yourself in.
Emmalee is billed as a prequel to the rest of Butler’s Redway Acres series, but reads well as a standalone. I highly recommend it to readers who like historical novels.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2020I know this is the 6th in the series, but luckily this is a prequel and can be read as standalone. Redway Acres book 6 tells the story of Emmalee, a 16 years old girl. While at the start of the book, we see Emmalee as a naïve little girl, as the story progresses, we see her mature into a fierce and spirited young woman. At first, it seemed like a Jane Austen sort of reading, but as I read on, I realized it was a dark tale of historical romance. The book captures the concepts of arranged marriage so well and considering that I am from that part of the world where people still believe in arranged marriages made Emmalee’s journey genuine for me. However, I was furious when she forgave David but could understand her sentiments.
I have to add that the book is so much more than Emmalee and David’s marriage. It shows us the loves of many other characters who are in some way related to Emmalee and how their stories connect is something that will leave readers wanting for more.
I highly recommend this one for people who love dark historical romance books.
