4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 1,110 ratings

James Denis gives Captain Lacey a task, to deliver a mysterious package to a man with an office near the Custom House on the bank of the Thames. Lacey, who has been drawn into danger delivering items for Denis before, opens the package to find a single chess piece, a white queen.

The piece tells Lacey nothing, but he soon realizes it plays deeply into Denis’s ongoing battle for control of London’s underworld.

Meanwhile Lacey encounters an old army friend just returned from Antigua, who is being accused of smuggling and possibly murder. Lacey decides to help the man, whom he considers honorable, to clear his name.

But Lacey is drawn farther into the dark games of James Denis and his rival, until only his wits and memories from his past can save himself and his family from gravest danger.

I've been a long time reader of the Captain Lacey series and I had to write a review because this one is just about the best of the series! The story is layered with mystery and high tension, danger and lovely personal moments between the characters. Speaking of characters, is it possible to just love a character like an old friend? Captain Lacey is so decent and honorable, and the small moment where he snips a bit of foolscap (paper) to save rather than be wasteful and throw it away, was just so endearing.

The authors did something I absolutely loved. Any reader of mysteries is familiar with picking up clues as you read and coming up with theories in your head as you read....well, they had Captain Lacey confronting his mysterious friend with what he thought was really going on. It was exactly what I'd been thinking in my own head and then, both Captain Lacey and the reader (me) are stymied to find out, NOPE that's not what happened after all. Both of us had to get back to the drawing board but it was an absolutely fun and challenging way to draw the reader into the story! Bravo!

The added tension and danger of the war between criminal masterminds, Denis vs Creasy, was a wonderful plot addition. Drawing our dear Captain and his family a bit too close to the danger in the process. Wonderfully done! Captain Lacey is a man fortunate in his friends and family and his deepening awareness of this blessing is a lovely thing to behold.

Cannot wait for the next book in this series. Highly recommend!

I am picky about what series I purchase. I started as a fan of Jennifer Ashley's shifters unbound books years ago. I happened to see the captain lacey mysteries under her other pen name. I was hooked after the first one. Once I had my first kindle, I started buying them all. While the mysteries are good, its the characters that keep me enthra!led. Her research has been so thorough that you feel like part of the era. Today's society is accustomed to driving several miles at speed. We have supermarkets and fast food. These books remind us life was slower not so very long ago. These are well worth sitting down with a pot of tea and indulging in great writing.

This is a lively series with good characters. The various plots are interesting and well thought out. Captain Lacey is always delving into something!

This is one of the best historical mystery series set in the Regency period. The characters grow and develop over the course of time, and their complex interactions drive this story with several different mysteries for Capt. Lacey to solve.

Are they connected? Lacey's friend is lying - but about something innocent as he claims, or is he lying about the murder he's accused of? And it doesn't help when Lacey finds himself in the middle of a war between two master criminals, putting his entire family in danger. Then more men are murdered. But what did these men have in common?

The action is non-stop, with red herrings galore. Never fear, Grenville makes his obligatory appearance. Marianne doesn't play any significant part in the story. I have never warmed up to her character, so this was fine with me.

To solve who committed the murders, Lacey must first figure out why they happened in the first place. Once again, he is able to make the leaps of logic that connect so many disparate incidents into a deduction that exposes the murderer and explains everything.

The interaction between Lacey and his wife Donata is one of the strongest points about this series. Their love for one another doesn't prevent difficulties from happening, but their relationship strengthens with every obstacle they overcome together. This story really gives Donata a chance to shine, and I enjoyed every scene she was in.

Highly recommended, but note that this series, like most, is best read in order.

I can't believe there are 15 books in the Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries. If ever there was a set of books that should be turned into a TV series, this is it. Each story gets better and better. This story has a murder or two, explosions, returning favorite characters, and lots more. Don't want to give away any plots. If you are a fan of mysteries, I think you will like this book and the previous ones as well.

I've read the whole series so far and haven't been disappointed yet! Captain Lacey is an intriguing character who seems to always find a puzzle to solve...mostly murder. His family and friends are colorful and unique, always entertaining. Anyone who loves regency romance mixed with danger and laughter will enjoy this series.

The story was well written and the storyline well defined. The author drew the reader in and kept our interest throughout the story as well as allowing us to experience her characters many emotions. The story had intrigue, suspense, betrayal, danger, murder, kidnapping, discoveries, love, and happy endings.

Another intriguing mystery and an enjoyable time spent with beloved characters. I am truly addicted to this series. And I think I am beginning to fall in love with the “dreaded” His Nib, Mr. Denis.😀

I just love how Captain Gabriel Lacey gets into strife without even trying. This mystery was as interesting but even more tense than all the others and I couldn’t help but read on and on to see how he got himself out of his incredibly dangerous situations and his logic to clear up the situation he finds himself in. I really liked all the characters and the Chess game feature was just superb. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
