Season of Hope (North Country Romance Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 247 ratings

Former Delta Commander Brooks Harriman crashed and burned when his fiance betrayed him with his very own brother. With the intervention of God and a really great Baltimore cop, Brooks became a recovering alcoholic. He left Baltimore, the O's, baseball, church and his family to seek a life of quiet faith and solitude in the North Country. Now a woodcrafter, a talent and trade passed on from his father, Brooks has created a steady, non-drama life. Just what he wants.

But when Rita Slocum works to conquer her own addiction, and when he sees the struggle of a single mother overcoming addiction in a small town, Brooks wants to help, but he hasn't let anyone in, anyone really close for a lot of years. Does he dare start now? With Rita? She's been betrayed by her husband and her brother-in-law and is dealing with three kids, one of whom is a-- he hates to say it-- brat. When a stray dog rattles his well-guarded quiet life, and three kids bring love and chaos to his ordered existence, the former operative realizes that maybe this is the second chance he doesn't think he deserves... but maybe--
Just maybe--
He does.

USA Today bestselling, award-winning author Ruth Logan Herne is the author of over 70 novels and novellas. She loves God, her family, country, coffee, chocolate and dogs, and wishes possums would leave the cat food on the side porch alone. And yet... they don't. With over two million books in print, Ruthy is living her dream of touching hearts and souls by writing the kind of books she likes to read. Whether it's losing yourself in her top-selling "Double S Ranch" cowboy series for Multnomah/Waterbrook or her bestselling Wishing Bridge series for Waterfall Press/Brilliance Audio/Indie, or her fan-favorite cozy mysteries from Guideposts, Ruthy's particular talent for contemporary lyricism draws the readers in, heart... and soul.

The mother of six with a somewhat stolen seventh "daughter of her heart" and Godmother to many others, Ruthy takes her living experiences and turns them into relatable stories of faith, hope and love. She lives on a pumpkin farm in Western New York with "Farmer Dave", a man who probably had no idea what he was getting into when he popped the question years ago. Their pumpkin farm has become a signature spot in their town and folks come from all over Western New York in September and October to enjoy an old-fashioned, affordable family experience embracing all aspects of fall, including Ruthy's homemade cakes, cookies, breads, jams, fudge and fried pies!

Ruthy and a couple of helpers take charge of the kitchen every fall, producing all the baked goods, jams, fudge and dough for their fried dough booth. The farm store offers Ruthy a chance for readers and visitors to grab books, learn more about one of their favorite authors, support their "Pink on Every Porch" breast cancer awareness wagon for pink pumpkins and mums, and those two months of farm life give Ruthy a chance to chat with real people... then turn them into fictional characters during the quiet of mid-winter, so be careful what you say! Visit her at her Ruth Logan Herne website, friend or follow her on Facebook. She loves to hear from readers!

This second story in the North Country Romance series continues the relationship between Rita and Brooks that began in the previous book. Readers will understand Rita much better after reading book 1. This book included the developing romance between Rita and Brooks, the events that led to his own addiction, and how both characters faced their fears, weaknesses, and shame. Insight into AA and the help given by support sponsors showed throughout the story, along with faith and Biblical knowledge that strengthened their hopes and dreams for the future.

A well-written romance that involves friendship, family, and God. The struggles with self-worth enrich the story as we see how people help others stay the course.

I don't know how I'm going to keep up with this author and all her series, but I guess I'll keep trying. I can't wait to see how she ends this series, and I'm sure I'm going to wish it could keep going and going. If you're looking for a good read, start with Book 1 in any of her series and you'll be hooked until you get to the last one...I always am.

Ruth Logan Herne has written another wonderful book that will pull on your heart strings, make you smile, maybe get a little teary-eyed, and renew your hope. Ruth, who knows first-hand what it’s like to spend her childhood years in a home with alcoholic parents, writes this story with openness, honesty, and most importantly, hope. It’s a beautiful story of forgiveness, redemption and love, and it moved me deeply. I highly recommend this book. It is one you will want to read time and again.

Ms. Herne, once again, wrote a book that comes to life. I could visualize all of the people as they worked through bad choices that were made. Innocent people were hurt, but God prevailed and brought them love and peace. Looking forward to reading book 3.

This is such a great read because Ruthy always adds kids, animals, romance, Scripture and baked goods to her stories.
