Watty Award-Winning Novel

Azure Brimvine lives in a world decimated by magic. One where humans have retreated underground from the overwhelming dangers of the surface. But Below is no safer than Above. Magic borne plagues continue to eat away at the remaining human cities. A sickness that doesn't merely kill, but creates aberrations from the stricken: people twisted by magic into something dark, dangerous, and powerful.

But when Azzy's brother, Armin, is infected and cast out into the Above, she sets out after him, determined to be there for him no matter what he becomes. The world Above is full of monsters, both wild and cunning, some more human than Azzy was led to believe.

Her search for Armin leads her to Avergard, a ruthless city of inhuman lords and twisted creatures. Azzy must find allies and forge new bonds in this broken world, brave the perils of the Above, and reach Armin before his new power is used to open the Gate once more.

Kristin Jacques is an author from small town New England. She grew up in the sticks, surrounded by river wildlife and various swamp inhabitants. Somehow she managed to keep all her toes, despite a run in with a snapper or two.

She lives with her husband and sons in another small New England town. She is mighty attached to them. When not writing, she is likely reading, watching a terrific B-Horror flick, or further spoiling the family cats. Sometimes she has blue hair.

CHARACTERSAzure (Azzy) – main protagonistArmin – brother, having magic inside him growing strongerBrixby – guardian of the pair, after their mother diedWolf (Kai) – protector of Azzy, after she saved his lifeSafiya – witch in the woodsWRITING“The sun-soaked day to your brother’s storms.” – a beautiful quote from the book to describe brother and sister. The first half of the story is read through Azzy’s eyes. Then we switch to other character’s views of the story. Jumping from one character’s view to another can get confusing, but I didn’t get lost once, reading til the very last page. Reaching the fevered climax where the plot takes an unexpected turn, jumping between character narrations, was infuriating and made each page that much more intriguing as we wait to find out what will happen next, blending past with present.PLOTThere is the main plot, Azzy’s search for her brother, seamlessly woven with subplots that feel both realistic and possible in this world. Losing myself in this fantastical world was unexpectedly easy.WORLDThere are creatures in this world, warped and changed by magic. I loved learning more about how this world was changed. There are cities above and below ground, very different from one another. My only wish here was to learn more about how magic came to exist in this world, and why it tainted humans and animals alike.OVERALLI wished there were more history and flashbacks into the pasts of the characters in this book. I don’t want to wait for the second installment. I need to know where this journey will end, and whether everything will end well… There are so many routes open to this ending that there’s no way I can wait to read more!In Shorta dark, twisted and extraordinary world filled with imagery woven with wordsa love so deep, it transcends space and timecaptivating characters you will long for and root for until the bitter end

This is such an AWESOME book!!! A friend recommended it to me, and I am SO GLAD she did!!!!! I would have missed out on an AMAZING story!!!!

The world in this book is sooo well written, that I felt like I was there! And there is a lot going on in this world. There is the below, where the story begins, and then there’s the above!!! Neither is safe really. Magic has done a job on the people, mentally and physically. The main character, Azure or Azzy, goes above ground with her guardian, Bixby, to save her younger brother, Armin. Then Azzy is on the journey of a lifetime!! She meets so many characters along the way, but non so dear to her than Kai the wolf. I loved Azzy and Kai, and I can’t wait to read more about them!!!! But I loved so many of the characters, they were written so beautifully. All the details were splayed out to us, so that we are able to imagine them as real and have strong feelings about them, whether good or bad.

I’m not going to tell you too much about the story, because I want you to read it and experience it for yourself. The writing is flawless and story moves along at an even keel, you will be lost to it!! Turn pages one after the other, and not wanting to put it down. I was/am sooo sad it ended. BUT I cannot wait for book two, when Azzy’s journey continues!!

Do you like fantasy? Adventure? Amazing writing and thrilling action? You'll love MARROW CHARM.

The heroine, Azzy, is the kind of girl we need in YA. She is relatable and human and real, and you will be rooting for her before the first chapter is through.

Azzy lives in a world of monsters and ill-gotten magic. During her journey, she meets a number of vicious, twisted creatures that were once human; your heart will ache for some of them. Then there is Azzy's strange companion - a large wolf who is not a beast at all, though he has perhaps forgotten how to be anything but. The bond between them is the kind of friendship we all want and love to see in books and movies and TV series.

MARROW CHARM is among the best YA novels I have ever read. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good book - not just YA readers, or even fantasy readers. It's rare to find a book with such rich characters and vibrant, imaginative world. Absolute 10/10

I really liked the worldbuilding most of all in this one. It took me a while to get into but once we get Azzy and the wolf I started to get more invested. Not sure I’m happy with the ending tho, while I know there is a sequel I don’t think it necessarily wrapped book one up well enough for me. But we’ll see how book two turns out.

Kristin Jacques knows how to spin a story! I have been following this author for several years now, and with each book she manages to use spectacular world-building, consummate word craft, and an endless imagination to suck you right into the story and keep you there until the very end.

In this story she reimagines the world after an apocalyptic Third Reich as having unleashed a dark magic that festers on the surface of the planet, infecting humans who encounter the magic, turning them into monsters. Most of humanity lives beneath the surface, fearful of turning into monsters themselves. Enter our heroine, Azzy Brimvine, whose brother Armin becomes infected. Azzy will stop at nothing to rescue her brother, risking everything to do so.

Loved it!

As soon as I finished Marrow Charm, I did two things: 1) I ordered two paperback copies for friend I knew would love it as much as I did (if not more!), and 2) cried that book 2 wasn't out yet.

Jacques is an immensely talented writer, crafting fantastical worlds of monsters, magic, mayhem, and madness with stories that are ultimately so very human. There are haunting glimmers of love and hope peppered in with the tragedy and terror, and characters that stay with you long after you've finished reading. Skin Curse can't get here soon enough!

Marrow charm is a riveting fantasy filled with haunting images, breathtaking action and a solid dose of body horror. It is the kind of book that grabs a hold of your heart and mind and does not let go, long after you've finished it.

Jacques paints an incredible world of magic and pain, but also beautiful moments of caring and unbreakable bonds, especially between Azzy and her younger brother, but also between her and Kai, as the girl from the deep goes to the world Above. As more and more of the characters pasts and their suffering is revealed, the more my heart was ripped to shreds for them, but their determination to survive and find one another kept me glued to the page.

I can't wait for the second book so I can return to this haunting, horrible, and sublimely magical place!

Marrow Charm is a sweeping dark fantasy full of captivating characters and beautiful writing. The author's voice is unique and pulls you into the story until you forget that you are reading.

Perfect for fans of mystery and magic (and a bit dystopian to boot!).

Marrow Charm is a book I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys tales of magic, family, and danger. I love how dedicated Azzy is to her mission in saving her brother, Armin.

Great display of imagination, a blend between fantasy and horror. Very descriptive and well written. Unfortunately a shorter read than the original unedited Wattpad version. But still a good read none the less

4.0 out of 5 stars A slow-burn winning weird-fest
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 3, 2021
A weird and wonderful dark YA series starter that reads like a bad dream (but in a good way - for the most part).

It's creepy, it's atmospheric, and if you like mysterious worlds and unreliable character narration (in third person) that won't reveal all straight off the bat you'll love this dystopian post-magical-apocalypse tale.

The first half had some pacing and storytelling issues for me that made it hard to understand what was going on, but past those confusing parts I was gripped by the weirdness of the world that slipped between strange dream and twisted nightmare. Magic, monsters, mythology-like ideas combine in a YA journey story with a decidedly dark undertone. It's a slow-burn of a plot that doesn't really set an end game bigger than one character searching for another, but there are so many foreshadowing hints at what could be to come you know there's more than meets the eye.

During those slow early moments, I never thought I'd be as invested in the characters or their story as I was by the end. It was well worth reading through, and I'm definitely checking out more from this series!
