Laughter of the Damned: A Satirical Sendup of Heaven and Hell Kindle Edition
If you could design a heaven for your friends and a hell for your enemies, you would be challenged to come up with anything as quirkily appropriate as Mike Corbett has provided for the reader. Demons, angels, politicians and clergyman collide in this satirical ambush from the present day to the time of Torquemada. Although the text touches on sensitive issues, it is the author’s hope to inspire more laughter than resentment.
Laughter of the Damned is not only about perceptions of heaven and hell; it is a buffet of fiendishly delicious surprises. It simultaneously stimulates the intellect, the imagination, the libido and the inherent appetite for original thought. Although provocative, the subject matter is merely the canvas for the writer’s irreverent and imaginative visions, and his wit sneaks in at surprising moments.

From the Author
Having a good idea but despising its execution due to an ill-chosen phrase is so common as to deserve little attention, but if thereader can sense the conflict, perhaps it's not wasted. If you find the perfectcombination of words and ideas, you may be fairly certain that it has already been used.
If your expectation is to read something today that youmight remember a week later, it is my humble ambition to produce it.
From the Back Cover
"A true cynic has one obvious characteristic; he cannot be disappointed."
"Heaven is an item from the cave of the thief of dreams."
"I particularly reject all representatives of religion who don't think that the prayers of children of any faith are heard by the same ears."
"But in heaven, as in life, a properly assigned husband may expect to be left alone until needed (as in a fourth for bridge) as a kind of social lubricant."
"Eternity is a river of tears; tears of sorrow and of joy in equal measure."
"I am fashionably unimpressed with the material world. I am moved by the beauty of aspiration, and I hope that I can elevate myself to the standards I have imposed on others."
"Satan: Something's different around here. I don't hear sounds of wailing anymore."
"There is a sort of mental treason that smothers dreams outside of reason."

About the author

Mike Corbett has spent his fortunate life in the company of stimulating people in extraordinary situations. Along with Laughter of the Damned (a satirical sendup of heaven and hell) and Mr. Nachron’s List (a blend of romance, history and science fiction), he has written tactical books on poker and backgammon. Corbett is fascinated by the wavering border between reality and fantasy and he is a master of the transition from observation to interpretation.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2011I loved every line of it and have read it twice!! I go to my favorite "bits" as it does make me chuckle out loud. It is the smartest, wittiest book I have read in a long time. It was and continues to bring me joy as I skip from page to page. I am ready to share it with others now and let them experience it for themselves. Thanks for such a wonderful gift you have given to me and all the others that are lucky enough to share the inside of that incredible mind and heart of Mike Corbett. He is a naughty genius.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2011I was given this book as a gift several months ago and have kept it on my night table ever since. It's the kind of book you can pick up and open up at any random point and read something fresh and enjoyable, often LOL funny. The chapters are short & accessible and span a fun variety of topics -- post-sex afterglow, imaginary conversations with Satan, moms, reincarnation, the adrenal glands. . . . . I still haven't read them all, but my favorite so far is "Cruisin'" (about commercial cruise lines, and having been on just one cruise myself, in my opinion he has just the right take on it). Yet none are frivolous and all have depth. Mr. Corbett is a natural born writer with tremendous intelligence and an easy, unpretentious writing style that draws you in no matter what the topic. I think if this book were marketed as the perfect gift for people who are impossible to buy gifts for, it would be a best seller.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2011"Laughter of the Damned" is an excellent read - original, unique and DIFFERENT. Corbett's writing style draws you in and takes you on a wild ride. It is impossible to resist the topics of Heaven and Hell - where we'll end up and what we'll find. This book tackles the really big picture - what happens after our time on this planet - with true originality, taking us on adventures in the afterlife. If what we find is half as interesting as it is in Corbett's mind, I can't wait to get there! When does someone offer you a slice of heaven and at the same time land you in the middle of the devil's workshop? It is like nothing I have ever read and stands alone in this quirky thought provoking and entertaining place - so funny and clever! It was my holiday gift giving list and friends have now formed quite a fan club! So exciting following a newly discovered author. Hungry for more !!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2011A friend sent me Laughter of the Damned so I felt obliged to read a few pages, but I read the whole thing. Mike Corbett has interesting ideas and expresses them with originality. The Pope testing the acoustics of the Sistine Chapel; "confluence of vulnerabilities; not a bad, bad, bad man; the warmest kind of death; tedium of ethical consistency;" good words, well used, George Orwell is pleased. Don't get me wrong, this is not the best book ever. My point is this: Mike Corbett is capable of writing best book ever.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2011Each chapter captures a different take on where we are going after we die. This myriad of different view points reflects the diverse opinions and emotions that exist with respect to the much discussed topic of "life after death". Corbett manages to "lighten up" a usually dark subject, death, with injections of wit and humorous dialogue - most notably the dialogue between the devils. A truly artistic piece that encourages the reader to imagine his or her own version of heaven and hell.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2011What refreshing thoughts. Each of these tiny chapters is unique
by itself, so one can pick up and read any one at all, and yet
they all fit together so smoothly. Definitely a great gift also.
Hopefully Mike keeps the words coming for us readers.
I can only re-read this one so many times !
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2011Having just read the Autobiography of Mark Twain, I realized that Mike Corbett has many of the same styleistic approaches to his characters and tricks the mind into thinking "off the book". This writer will, in my opinnion, score big some day with one of this works!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2011I read the book on a recent trip and laughed so much passengers around me were curious about the book. Reading Mr. Corbett's stories was like eating candy. I cannot wait until the next one is available.
