Don't be scared! - Hab keine Angst!: Bilingual Children's Picture Book English-German (Kids Learn German 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 88 ratings

Learning English or German is great fun!

This bilingual children’s story is about little Susie. She is frightened. But she does not want to tell anybody. When her mother wants to bake a cake for her family she sends Susie to the village to buy some ingredients. The girl has to pass dark forests, scary fields, and wide grasslands with angry wolves and fire-spying dragons. But is that all real?

Will she be able to handle her fears?

The vivid color illustrations and the fun and scary story make for an entertaining and educational experience. The text is simple enough to grab kids' attention, with lots of repetitions that give it rhythm. If you enjoyed "Where the Wild Things Are" you will love this book.

Here’s what you’ll find inside this book:

  • 19 pages of kid-friendly fun, designed to inspire and teach kids ages 3-7
  • Parallel text in English and German on every page
  • A true and interesting story perfect for reading out loud
  • EXTRA pages for coloring at the end of the print book version
  • For reading aloud at home or in preschool, kindergarten, for reading together at school
  • Optimal for the first contact with a foreign language

If you’re looking for a great activity for kids that combines reading, listening, and learning, this is the book for you!

In this story, a little girl is sent to a store in the village to pick up a few ingredients to make a cake. Along the way, however, she runs across scary things like monsters and scarecrows... and there seemed to be creepy eyes everywhere. However, when joined by her grandfather on the way home, she realizes that none of what she saw earlier was accurate. Her fear had caused her to see things that weren't there. This is a dual-language book in German and English. While my German is a little rusty, I thought some words and phrases weren't quite translated right between the two languages. Unlike some of this author's other books, the English words were not always next to the German translation. Sometimes, instead, the author gave a few brief paragraphs in English before translating them all into German. The illustrations were well done, and the scary portion of the book did look appropriately dark and creepy. All in all, despite some flaws, if you have a bilingual child who knows both English and German or if they are learning German in school, this picture book could help them pick up new vocabulary and structures.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Susie’s mom wanted to bake a care for her family.
She wanted Susie to go to the store & get the stuff she needed.
Susie feared several things.
Susie managed to make it to the store.

What happened then?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn colored pictures, charming illustrations & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children’s (preschool/elementary age) English-German children’s storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s educational presentation (overcoming fear), English-German children’s movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

I received an ARC of Don't Be Scared in exchange for Review. I liked the story about teaching kids not to be afraid. I also think it's great for kids to learn German. I however do not speak German so even though the words were there I wasn't about to pronounce them to teach the kids

I was given this children’s book for free to read and review. My four year old grandson and I read books every night at bedtime. It has been our tradition since he was born. He is now old enough to really comprehend and enjoy the books for more than just the entertainment factor so I like to find new books that have more to them than just a silly story. This book helps kids realize that not everything is as scary as it seems when you are by yourself, which just so happens to be perfect timing as he recently has had some issues with waking up in his room at night in the dark and getting scared. The story has a little girl needing to go to the store for her mom and imagining all kinds of scary things along the way only to find with the help of her grandpa that it wasn’t scary after all. My grandson loved the illustrations and laughed at all the spooky things she thought she saw along her path. He decided that they weren’t real right from the beginning and that she didn’t need to be so scared. He really loved this story. Another cool thing about this book is it is a bi-lingual learning book. Each page has the sentences in English at the top and German at the bottom. He thought this was really neat. I loved it as well. I remember as a child reading Babar the Elephant and Madeline the same way but in English and French. It gave me a love of the French language and a thirst for learning. My grandson loves watching foreign language videos on YouTube and some are German so maybe reading this book in both languages will inspire him to learn that language. I highly recommend this book and it gets a thumbs up from my grandson as well.

Susie helps her mom out by going to the village, but along the way she sees things that scare, but she keeps going. On the way home she realizes that facing her fears helps her to overcome them and things are not as scary anymore. The story talks about overcoming fears, moving past them, and to keep trying. I did receive this as an ARC, which I voluntarily reviewed.
Cute story, though some children maybe scared of some of the pictures, while others will think that they are funny.
