Daisy: A Historical Novel of Family Friendship and Love Kindle Edition
"A perfect weekend or holiday read"
Sit back, relax and escape for a little while into the world of DAISY.
"DAISY" is a gentle family saga, spanning almost 100 years, from 1887 to 1974. It is set in Alabama, Harlem and London and incorporates some of the evils of society -- poverty, racism and snobbery -- as well as some of the greatest that life has to offer -- family, friendship and love.
"Being born poor was a scar that never faded."
"She had never experienced racial hatred first hand, so had no real idea of how it could erode a person's whole life."

Review
"Well written, very detailed and extremely insightful. Daisy is a story about acceptance- of people different from oneself - different in terms of wealth, education, occupation, social standing, colour, sexual orientation, gender, etc. We praise the author for writing this story about topics that are very timely." --James L.
"I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful story with its theme of love overcoming prejudice. The ties that bind family together over generations were beautifully written. Read this story if you want your heart warmed. I loved it!" --Meredith.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2022I’m not sure what I expected, but when I read the first few pages, I knew that Daisy was not your everyday novel. There is so much going on in Daisy that at times you’ll feel you need a spreadsheet to keep track of all the players. But Daisy captured me and held me until the very end. Backley’s writing is complex, her dialogue is very well executed and her characters almost feel like they are in the room with you. Backley touches on several hot-button issues such as rape, racism, homosexuality and classism and how not much has changed with regard to some of these over the last 100 years. Daisy takes place over an almost 100 year period of time and there is so much history shared within the story it is amazing;there's so much about the human psyche that you won’t ever learn in school. I can’t wait to read The Second Daisy and find out what happens in the lives of these people who are connected in some amazing ways.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2020Pat Backley's, "DAISY" is a story, spanning nearly a 100 years, from 1887 to 1974. It is about the lives of the four powerful women. The story is set in Alabama, Harlem, and London. It defines the short comings of society, poverty, bigotry, and the effects of a economic classes of the times.
Daisy is an appealing story with a curious mix of addicting characters. Backley's "Daisy" has everything a good story needs to keep the reader's attention, adventure, struggle, and facinating characters to keep you hooked from start to finish. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading future works from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2020I’m normally not a huge fan of third-person narrators who are as omniscient as the as one in this novel, able to glide in and out of one character’s thoughts and feelings and right into another’s, often within the same scene. However, Daisy is not your typical novel. The majority of this book is told, rather than shown, which flies against what most writers are taught. Though the story here spans more than a hundred years, it feels as though there are actually very few detailed scenes. For the most part, this book tells the story of generation of families who find themselves living in England and struggling against discrimination of one form or another. One family is from London and faces constant discrimination for being either too poor or too rich. Another family flees the heavy persecution of the American South to find a better, more tolerant life overseas. A third family leaves the relative comfort of their home in Harlem only to discover “their kind” isn’t as welcome in England as they might’ve thought.
The novel did lose me in places with the overabundance of characters. There are also places in which the novel feels like an extra-lengthy report from Ancestry.dot.com. But the heart and the soul of the book is so sweet and well-meaning it’s impossible not to feel something from reading of these people and what they go through and the deep affection they feel for one another. Daisy also seems to be about the profound importance of family and the inevitability of death as we each make way for the generation behind us. This book made me think a lot about my own mortality, a topic most anyone can relate to.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2021The author tackled a lot of issues in not very subtle ways, weaving the story with, I think, the attempt to show the relationship between past and current issues, something I like very much, but the book needs more than that. I found the characters flat, the dialogue unhelpful, and the story - with many possibilities - not adventurous from a writing standpoint. The author has talent and I would hope that a succeeding novel would go a little deeper. I'm afraid this came across - to me, anyway, but apparently not to others - as "Look at me, I'm writing a novel." I would also suggest an editorial eye that cared both for the story and the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2020More than anything, Daisy is about friendship and family, and feeling connected. Wonderful storytelling, through several generations of three different families, the characters show us love, hope, acceptance, adversity and how they thrive together. There are so many heartwarming moments in this novel, and sad moments too, but I loved the large colorful cast of characters and their quirks, and how they saw the changing world that they lived in from the late 19th century up into the middle of the 20th. This book reminded me so much of Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher, in the writing style and the parallels between present and past shown throughout.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2020I found this to be a delightful book that covers several generations of two different, yet similar families as they struggle to survive, love, and deal with what life hands them.
The book is well-written, the characters are believable, and the story moves easily. It kept me entertained. I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2020Writer Pat Backley may have accomplished “unity” from the theme of Daisy, and that is we all have the same problem throughout the world. We don’t need to place an adjective in front of it anymore. Racism is just there and everywhere. Backley writes with compassion and clarity for the reader to understand that compassion. It’s a short read, yet it catches both the heart and the need to sustain it from the societal menace.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2020I love a good book with great characters and an amazing story. This book falls in all of those categories. Some people are afraid to talk about issues concerning race and don’t like discussing poverty, but his author dealt with those topics and a few more to bring her story together. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book with a message and also an enjoyable read.
A thought provocing read appropriate for these times when the injustices of the past are finally being recognised.
Passion and human emotion so well expressed by the characters illustrate in the storey how human resillience can overcome and survive oppression.
Thank you Pat Backley

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully woven story of indomitable women in the roughest century the world left behind
The book took me closer to the lives of the four powerful women spanning across continents. A super read which I devoured in a few hours coz I just couldn't put it down. The author has drawn out poignant emotions on the backdrop of historical incidents, that tug the heart. Polly and Daisy will remain in our hearts as pure souls.
