The Turncoat King: (Includes The Rising Wave Prequel Novella) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,142 ratings

A thirst for revenge . . . Ava is committed to vengeance against the man responsible for the death of her parents. The same man, the Queen's Herald, kept her prisoner for two years, until she escaped with Luc, a warlord bent on vengeance just as fierce as her own. He's forged a powerful army of people from all through the region, called the Rising Wave, to march on the Kassian royal family and smash its corrupt power under the weight of their anger. But for Luc, just as for Ava, his true motive is a lot more personal.

A hidden magic . . . Luc suspects Ava has magical abilities, suspects he's benefited greatly from them, but he's no stranger to the burdens of power, and he's prepared to let her tell him in her own time—after all, she's his heart's choice and he will give her all the time she needs. Except time is running out for both of them. As they near the Kassian stronghold, forces from within their own camp and without will use every trick they have to stop both Luc and Ava and tear them apart.

A secret laid bare . . . Luc knows Ava has a secret she's keeping from him—but what he doesn't realize is she has many. And when those secrets are exposed, everyone will have to grapple with the consequences. Ava is prepared to sacrifice her happiness and even her life to save the Rising Wave and Luc—but she would prefer to use her heart and her head to outwit her enemies instead.

Author's note: The Rising Wave series begins with a prequel novella, The Rising Wave, which is available separately but is also included in The Turncoat King as bonus material.

Great read, not sure why this one is free but this author does great work!

Thoughtful story arc, characters with depth & no plot holes. I’m on my second time reading it & going back through the series & all of this author’s works as they are enjoyable.

I enjoyed this book. Not a typical love story, but one none the less. It had adventures and kept me interested in finishing

I've very much enjoyed this book. I love the take on magic via embroidery. The romance was cozy and mild. This was a fun story and I plan to read the next book

Ava can work magic with her embroidery. She can add protection to clothing, put suggestions into scraps of cloth, and add invisibility to scarves. Luc is a warlord leading an army to battle against the nation that had stolen them as children and forced them to become soldiers.

It's an interesting premise but it lack at lot in world building. Luc's Chosen history is hinted at but never fully explained. I'm still not sure how exactly Ava is related to the queen and the herald.

It also builds up events and then glossed over - the battle at Bartolo, for example.

I love the way this author develops her MCs (main characters). They are smart, strong, resourceful, kind, loyal, funny, and emotionally intelligent. The type of people I'd like to be friends with IRL (in real life)!

This story follows Ava and Luc, whom we first met in a short story that was part of the Warlords, Witches & Wolves anthology. As this story enfolds Ava and Luc reunite and work together toward their common goals. As with real people, both characters bring strengths and weaknesses to the relationship, one of those strengths being the emotional intelligence they both display when determining who is best suited to deal with an obstacle. The maturity these characters display when making tough decisions, helps them build an incredible relationship that is based on respect, and trust (of course there is attraction and love there too :-))

Ava has magic and has been cautioned to keep it a secret. She has seen firsthand what others will do to get and keep her type of magic. While keeping her abilities secret will help keep her safe, she is mature enough to understand that in some circumstances, trusting another is the right path. I really love that even though she had some worries about revealing herself, she did not put herself above everyone else. She was able to clearly see when something was the right thing to do, and then do it. She did not spend time running in circles in her head and dithering while other characters suffered, she took action and did what needed to be done.

This story left me with a warm happy feeling, and I would say a happy ending. The good guys are winning and the bad guys got their comeuppance. Even though there will be another book to continue the tale. I feel like the author has left them in a good place, which consequently leaves me in a good place. :-)

I would recommend this story to anyone (especially if they enjoy tales that include magic, kick-arse MCs, and a good overcomes evil vibe). :-)

Fantasy romance The Turncoat King is the sequel to novella The Rising Wave, published in the  Warlords, Witches, and Wolves Anthology.
The novella was fantastic & I didn't want it to end! The MC Ava, secret magic weaver & princess, & Luc, Commander of the rebellion force The Rising Wave, are imprisoned together,  but escape and in process become lovers. Ava's magic is unusual & I loved learning about it with her.

The Turncoat King picks up shortly after the end of the The Rising Wave, and shows Ava enroute to rejoin Luc & by extension, The Rising Wave army, while trying to escape and outwit the Queen's Herald's minions.
The Turncoat King picks up shortly after the end of the The Rising Wave with fade-to-black romance, intrigue, deadly royal secrets, & traitors, all within a growing army bent on revenge. The Captain/Turncoat King & Ava both want revenge on the same monarchy for different reasons, fighting well together, she with her magic & fighting training, & him with his warrior knowledge & strategizing  ability, it makes them a fearsome pair. I enjoyed the war camp community & activities, such as storytelling and contests of strength and agility. Overall, the action, magic, supporting characters, & espionage make it a fun fantasy read!

I hadn’t re read this since I bought it. It’s still very good. I love the sly jokes between Luc and Ava. It had a good ending so can be a stand alone read. In fact the following books in the series were more grim for me, so I stop at this one. Happy with the magic and the low key loving. Not everything needs explicit love scenes as this book proves so well.

The development of another world is so fun! The characters are what kept me gripped for hours. Especially the way they interact with each other. It is like Friends meets Outlander. Jumping into the next one!

This was a fantastic read. I loved the two main characters and was pleased with the ending. You do need to read the rising wave though for the story to make sense.

Only reason this didn't get a 5 is because I think she needs to work on world building, there are so many places she could go with this. That being said I can't wait to buy the next book.
