Northern Escape (Northern Rescue Book 1) Kindle Edition
She internalized her physical scars.
Brielle Ives prefers dogs to people, and who could blame her? Her sled dogs are loyal to a fault, trust her implicitly, and couldn’t care less about the scars that mar her face. The only human who’s never disappointed her is her mentor, Dr. William Hunter. When his plane goes missing in the remote Alaskan wilderness, Bree will do anything to find him . . . even if it means turning to a frustrating, irresponsible, and too-sexy-for-his-own-good California boy for help.
His emotional walls keep him safe.
When Ellis Hunter enlisted in the Army at eighteen, he put Alaska—and his womanizing drunk of a father—in his rearview mirror. He promised himself he’d never return, but even he can’t resist Bree’s panicked plea for help. If she’s hell-bent on trekking into the bush to find his father, then he's determined to go with her. But Ellis isn’t the only one shadowing Bree’s rescue attempt…
Will a rescue mission in icy terrain melt their guarded hearts?
When the search for answers leaves Ellis and Bree trapped together in the wilds of Alaska, they’ll have to put aside their differences—and an attraction hot enough to melt glaciers—to survive the elements. Because someone dangerous lurks in that icy wilderness... a killer desperate to keep Dr. William Hunter's secrets buried deep in the snow.
Northern Escape is the thrilling first book in the Northern Rescue romantic suspense series. If you like captivating family dynamics, steamy chemistry, and edge-of-your-seat action, then you’ll love Tonya Burrows’ sizzling adventure.

About the author
Tonya Burrows wrote her first romance at age thirteen and hasn't put down her pen since. Originally from a small town in Western New York, she suffers from a bad case of wanderlust and is still searching for a place to call home. She shares her adventures with two adorable Doodles and Scribble the Writer Cat.
When she's not writing about hunky military heroes and their courageous K9s, Tonya can be found watching either true crime or baking shows while snuggled up on the couch with her furbabies. She also enjoys traveling—especially long road trips to see the National Parks.

One of the reasons I wanted to read this book is the setting the author chose - the Alaskan wilderness. Alaska is one of my favorite places and with the descriptive writing style it was easy to picture the scenes unfold as I read. I also loved the additions of the sled dogs and mushing. I actually did this when I was there and it was an amazing experience and, again, the setting surrounding the dogs was described perfectly. Each dog was unique and had its own personality and they all really added to the story.
Burrows does a good job of setting up the family dynamics and the emotional turmoil of the brothers concerning their relationships with each other and their father. There’s also plenty of danger, excitement, laughs, tension, secrets, lies, betrayals, forgiveness, understanding, love, and a compelling mystery to unravel. This book will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. I cannot wait for the next book in the series to see what’s revealed.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy received from the author. All thoughts/opinions are my own.
In this book, she adds a pack of sled dogs and one diva-riffic pocket pooch named Peanut! What's not to love?
More saga than series.
Implied HEA but an open ending for the main storyline that originally brought Ellis and Bree together.
Intriguing concept, romantic suspense category.
Ellis Hunter is the oldest of the three brothers that are contacted by Bree when Will, their father, goes missing. Having had a rough childhood, none of the three boys are eager to return "home" to investigate his disappearance until Bree announces that she's going out there with or without them.
A large portion of the book revolves around trying to survive against the odds in the Alaskan wilderness. Slow burn. The strong female lead, daresay, is stronger than the male lead.
This is the first book in the trilogy and it sets up the world and cast nicely. There are peeks and hints into the next book without giving too much away. The third book, for now, seems to be a wild card.
Again, while Ellis and Bree may have discovered an implied HEA, the mystery surrounding the "disappearance" of Will Hunter will continue, at least, into book 2 - if not the entire trilogy.
Tonya Burrows is back with a vengeance in this new series! Northern Escape is filled chock full of humor, angst, and complicated family dynamics, all set against the brutal, beautiful wilderness of Alaska. I found myself totally wrapped up in Ellis and Bree’s story – I could not put it down! What was William Hunter involved with prior to his disappearance? Why was his animal hospital/veterinary practice, Northern Rescue, in such an abandoned state? Ellis’s brother Nate also heeded Bree’s phone call, coming in from Fairbanks. But what is his California-based, reality TV/Celebrity veterinarian brother and his entourage doing in Alaska? Clearly the missing Dr. Hunter is not the only mystery swirling in the sub-zero winds.
As engrossing as the mystery surrounding William Hunter’s disappearance, what I found even more interesting was the backstory of the characters. When I finished the book, I realized a strong undercurrent throughout the book was scars- both the physical ones Bree had, and the not-so-apparent ones Bree and every Hunter brother carried. There were even glimpses of scars – gone quickly like mist – the missing Dr. Hunter may be dealing with. It was a powerful, heartbreaking thread woven throughout the pages that gave the book such added depth and emotion.
Of course, there is the trademark wit and great lines you look forward to from this author. Ellis’s observation of Bree’s demeanor in landing an out-of-fuel plane and Bree’s thoughtful response is legendary! Ms. Burrows always brilliantly balances the intensity of the plot with strokes of wit from the characters, and sometimes with a character itself. Ellis’s right-hand “man” Peanut is a character herself, bringing comfort and the color pink to his life. And let us not forget Bree’s “team” – filled with different personalities but driven by the same mission and their loyalty to her.
Suspense, mystery, romance, and a dog sled team? This is one fantastic read that I cannot recommend enough – bring on the next book in this series!

Bree knows a different Will Hunter, he is the father she never had, but getting three stubborn, damaged and hardheaded men to believe their neglectful and absent father has not only changed but also regrets his failures with the boys, is like trying to plait fog....it's never going to happen!
I love Bree, especially as the book progresses and her self confidence increases, it is fascinating that when fighting for someone else she completely forgets about her scars and gets lost in full on battle mode, but defending herself and her injuries is just too much and she would rather hide from the world than even try.
If I am honest I hate the Ellis we meet at the beginning of the book, he is shallow fake and is running...even if he denies it. The more humble Ellis who emerges as they cross Alaska, the Ellis who doesn't hesitate to risk his life for the dogs, the Ellis who constantly reminds and shows Bree how amazing she is, the Ellis who embraces Alaska because it is Brees home and the Ellis who admits he wants another chance to know his dad...he is easy to fall for.
This is a fast paced, first book in the series, packed with intrigue and action, I am looking forward to books two and three and getting to know the Hunter brothers better. Nate seems very withdrawn , but I hope having to fight for his woman will show us more of his personality, Damian however is another story. At this point in time I really dislike him, his attitude and his disdain for others, he will have to be pretty amazing to win me over, as his actions so far do not paint him well!
I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
Update:
I voluntarily listened to the audiobook provided by the author in existence for a review. It’s quite the suspensful story with a lot of secrets that do not get fully uncovered in the first book of the series. Stephen Borne once more does a fabulous job of getting the characters right on spot. His smooth voice fits perfectly.
