The Ex Hex: A Novel (The Graves Glen Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 13,092 ratings

New York Times Bestseller

Erin Sterling casts a delightful spell with a spine-tingling romance full of wishes, witches, and hexes gone wrong.

“A delightful and witty take on witchy mayhem.” — Popsugar

Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.

Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.

Review

“A spooky romantic comedy treat that had me sighing at one page, laughing out loud at the next. The Ex Hex is the perfect book for fall.” — New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey

“Sterling casts a spell on her readers with this romantic comedy. … As humorous and fantasy filled as the novel is, it also encourages readers to ponder the idea that the world is a very small place. Sterling puts a wonderful spin on two people who once had each other's backs to two people who need each other to save a city from destruction. A cute and laughable holiday read to get you through the harsh winter weather.” — USA Today

“Filled with delightful witchiness and humor, this playful romantic comedy from Sterling explores second chances and self-discovery. … Comedic chaos rules the day, with plenty of laughs overlaying just a touch of introspection as the exes realize how much they still mean to each other. The result is a fluffy Halloween treat.” — Publishers Weekly

“Sterling writes a fun, sexy romantic comedy with a compelling plot, fantastic worldbuilding, twists that give the story depth, and engaging primary and secondary characters. The novel wraps up plenty of loose ends, but readers will be eager for sequels.” — Library Journal

“A pitch-perfect paranormal romantic comedy … The Ex Hex seamlessly blends fantasy and romance, with a strong sense of world-building and magical rules that guide Vivienne and Rhys’s attempts to course-correct from the ‘accidental’ curse, and an equally evident sense of attraction between these two witches. A bit of unexpected magic, a dose of revenge and a sprinkling of steaminess churn together in a humorous and heartfelt paranormal romance, sure to delight fans of Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic—or any contemporary tale of witches run amok.”Shelf Awareness

“Sterling's novel is ultimately crisp and sweet, like biting into the perfect caramel apple, and makes for an equally delicious autumn treat that will sweep readers up into a world of whimsical magic. A wickedly funny rom-com about the power of second chances, family, and love.” — Kirkus

“A delightful and witty take on witchy mayhem” — Popsugar

“Diverting, magic-infused romance.” — Booklist

“If you like seasonal fall reads but don’t want to jump full into horror, this is the perfect October book for you. … It promises Hocus Pocus vibes, but with a lot more heat. So curl up with a pumpkin spice latte and The Ex Hex for a perfect autumnal reading experience.” — Bookriot

“Humorous, magical, and sexy.” — Girly Book Club

“This festive rom-com has it all!” — Woman's World

“The book perfectly hits the same sweet spot as the 1998 cinematic classic Practical Magic, without the dark plot elements about the abusive ex; it’s got a hint of Bell, Book and Candle charm without the casual midcentury sexism. It’s cozy and cute and Halloween appropriate, and Rhys is extremely attractive. The Ex Hex was, in short, a blast.” — Jezebel

Which Witch Stitch: The Power of Polka Dots

Which Witch Stitch: The Power of Polka Dots
Vivienne Jones of Graves Glen, Georgia, has always been reluctant about practicing witchcraft. Content to live the quiet life of a history professor, she's never embraced her powers like her Aunt Elaine or cousin Gwyn, who run a shop called Something Wicked. But nine years ago, Vivi and fellow witch Rhys Penhallow (the word warlock is so last century) fell deeply under love's spell. At least until Vivi learned he was betrothed to another, dumped him, and enlisted Gwyn to help her put a more-cathartic-than-harmful hex on Rhys. Such is the setup for Erin Sterling's The Ex Hex.Never having read a romcom about witches, I wasn't sure what to expect. So when Rhys returns to Graves Glen and runs into Vivi, I wondered what would transpire. Would Rhys get his revenge? More importantly, did the hex take effect in the first place? Because despite Vivi having condemned Rhys to, among other atrocities, an eternity of bad hair days, his coiffure remains intact. Nevertheless, strange things are happening. And Vivi and Rhys must find out why and put the kibosh on them before Halloween. Can these star-crossed exes reverse the curse despite their bad blood and simmering tension? Or will Graves Glen -- and their fledgling relationship -- be lost to the dark side?Saving the day requires Vivi to dig deep and embrace her powers. And to me, there's nothing more powerful than the part where she selects a dress to wear while unleashing her most potent magic:"But as Vivi looked through her closet, her eye fell on the dress she'd been wearing the night Rhys had first come back into town, the black one with the little orange polka dots and the orange patent leather belt. She *#%& loved that dress. But it didn't exactly scream Powerful Sorceress. She reached past it, going for the black dress she'd worn to the Fall Fair, but then she paused. This was her spell. No matter that her ancestor had given it the necessary boost, she was the one who'd cast the original curse, and she would be the one trying to remove it tonight. She was a powerful sorceress, polka dots or no, and if wearing her favorite dress would make her feel better, why not?" (281)I love when Vivi realizes that she -- not society -- gets to decide what outfit gives her authority.Never underestimate the power of a woman -- witch or not -- who knows what she wants from her wardrobe.

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling conjures up the sweet ambiance of an old Meg Ryan movie and the romance, holiday sparkle, and gorgeous scenery of a Hallmark movie. I really enjoyed this fast read with its likeable characters and atmospheric locale.

The story is set in picturesque Graves Glen, snuggled in rolling hills and fields at the foot of a Georgia mountain. The town is home to both witches and non-magic folks, with themed businesses like Something Wicked and the Coffee Cauldron thriving during the busy fall season when locals and tourists celebrate Founder’s Day, the Fall Festival, and, of course, Halloween. Graves Glen seems fun and festive, a place I’d love to visit if it truly existed. In case you’re wondering, a quick Google search turns up only one Graves Glen - a century farm in Massachusetts.

The trouble in The Ex Hex all starts when teenage cousins Vivi and Gwyn Jones cast a curse on Vivi’s ex-boyfriend, Rhys Penhallow, who broke her heart when he returned home to Wales to call off a previously unmentioned betrothal. The curse goes unnoticed for nine years, until Rhys returns to Graves Glen, unknowingly activating the curse and putting both himself and the town in danger. Will they find a way to cancel the curse before it’s too late? And will Vivi and Rhys rekindle the fire that burned so brightly between them during that memorable, long-ago summer? The journey to find the answers they seek is both challenging and enjoyable for the characters and readers alike.

Ms. Sterling crafts warm, charming characters like Vivi, Gwyn, and Gwyn’s mother, Eileen, who value family and home, as well as their suddenly talking cat, Sir Purrcival. On the opposite end of the loving family spectrum are the dysfunctional Penhallow men, with Rhys avoiding his overbearing father as much as possible and spending little time with his two brooding brothers, either. I suspect we may learn more about the mysterious Penhallow family in a separate novel yet to come.

I have just two complaints:
(1) Vivi and Rhys spend too much time jumping in and out of bed for people who are supposedly racing to break a curse.
(2) The final scenes as the Jones trio and Rhys attempt to break the curse have fantastic potential, but they’re too short with not enough details, making the ending a bit anticlimactic.

Despite the pending doom of the curse, The Ex Hex is an amusing rom-com that delivers fun characters trading witty banter in a beautiful setting. It will appeal to most readers who enjoy a breezy, modern romance, with no explicit sex or violence and just a light sprinkle of the paranormal woven throughout to create a perfect October read.

Never mix vodka and witchcraft.

Rhys and Vivienne were dating for 3 months when she learned he was betrothed to another witch. He didn't want to marry the other witch and was working on a way to avoid it, but he also didnt tel Vivi about it. Devastated by the news, she broke up with him. Later that evening, after some much needed vodka to soothe her broken heart, she conjured up a curse for her ex-boyfriend. Not believing it was a real curse, because she didn't have the right "magical" equipment, she went on about her life. After all, it was just a harmless little curse to make herself feel better. Or was it?

Nine years later Rhys reluctantly agrees to return to Graves Glen for the Founders Day festivities and to strengthen the town's magic ley lines. The town was founded by his ancestors so his appearance is necessary, although as soon as he enters the town, things go awry. First, he gets a flat tire, then Vivi almost hits him with her car. Later a statue of his ancestor falls and almost hits him. It's then that Vivi tells him of the "silly curse" she put on him 9 years ago.

Things really go wrong when he goes to recharge the town's magic via the ley lines with Vivi. The power surges, leaving the secret cave and heading straight for the town of Graves Glen. Events ensue that threaten the town and despite their proclaimed animosity, Vivi and Rhys must work together to end the hex she put on him and save the town from disaster. Working this closely together reminds each of them, just how strong their original feelings were and each one must decide if it's worth giving their relationship another try.

This book was a cute, easy read with a nice witchy vibe just in time for Halloween.

What a spellbinding rollercoaster of laughter, love, and a touch of magical chaos in Erin Sterling's "The Ex Hex" – a New York Times Bestseller that left me enchanted from start to finish! 📚🌟 It is really cute.

Vivienne Jones, our witty and resilient young witch, knows how to deal with heartbreak: a dash of vodka, a playlist that can bring tears to even the toughest souls, and, of course, a well-placed curse on the ex from hell. Who hasn't been there, right? But when the oh-so-handsome Rhys Penhallow saunters back into Graves Glen, Georgia, things take an unexpectedly hilarious turn. 😄🔮

The delightful and witty take on witchy mayhem. Erin Sterling weaves a tale where wishes, witches, and hexes go wrong and collide in a perfect storm of laughter and love. The annual fall festival turns into a calamity-filled adventure, complete with murderous wind-up toys, a ghost with a serious attitude problem, and a talking cat who may just spill the magical beans. 🎃👻🐱

What makes "The Ex Hex" truly shine is the undeniable chemistry between Vivi and Rhys. Their off-the-charts connection is both electrifying and heartwarming. Yet, as the chaos unfolds, they must put their romantic sparks on hold to save Graves Glen from the unintended consequences of Vivi's "harmless" Ex Hex. 💑💫

Erin Sterling has crafted a charming world where humor meets romance, and magic intertwines with mayhem. The storytelling is impeccable, the characters are endearing, and the plot twists keep you eagerly turning pages. I found myself laughing out loud one moment and swooning the next – a testament to the author's ability to balance humor and heart. 😆❤️

If you're in the mood for a bewitching romantic comedy with a touch of the supernatural, "The Ex Hex" is an absolute must-read. Especially if you loved the movie Practical Magic then this is for you. 📖

4.0 out of 5 stars The perfect witchy book for the spooky season!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 25, 2022
The Ex Hex is a simple witchy good time and an extremely easy read as the characters were engaging and the plot was entertaining. There were definitely aspects that I wish had been given more attention but overall, this was a delightful read and I'm already looking forward to getting my hands on the second book!

"Never mix vodka and witchcraft."
Obviously, that's what our main character Vivi and her cousin, Gwyn immediately went on to do after Rhys Penhallow broke Vivi's heart that summer they were 19. Oh, it was all a joke and accidental and they didn't actually curse him... Right? Well, fast forward nine years later, Rhys has returned to Graves Glen to recharge the ley lines and everything goes incredibly, horribly, very quickly wrong, not just for him but for the whole town. So, that long-ago curse definitely stuck! 😂 What ensues is all manner of hijinks as Vivi and Rhys, with a bit of help from Gwyn and aunt Elaine, try to reverse the curse in order to save the town from impending doom.

This is absolutely the perfect witchy book for the spooky season. The air is crisp with the chill of autumn, the whole town has put their gears in full throttle in preparation for Halloween, and with the addition of possessed toys, accidentally talking cats, haunted houses, angry ghosts and vengeful spirits, it's easy to feel completely immersed in all the spooky autumnal vibes. But as spooky as some scenes were, the story was well-balanced with heartfelt moments between family and plenty of hilarious situations and witty dialogue that will have you cackling as you read—at least, I know I laughed more than I expected to when I started this! The writing is infused with so much humour and it made this all the more enjoyable to read.

The second chance romance between Vivi and Rhys plays a significant role in the story and it does slightly eclipse the main "reverse the curse" plot, especially towards the end, but I really enjoyed their ever-present electrifying chemistry! From the moment they meet again it's clear that the magnetic pull they share has never faded and even after all these years, their mutual attraction hasn't dulled one bit. Through the dual perspectives, it was fun to see them try to deny and resist their feelings and it certainly upped the sexual tension until they inevitably cave and the clothes go flying (not literally). I loved how googly-eyed Rhys became around Vivi—it was cute and sweet and if you love a soft-hearted hero who would do anything for his love, Rhys won't disappoint! I will say that I don't think there's much character depth or progression although there was room for it, which is why I felt the ending was a bit of a letdown. Other than our MCs, I also loved Gwyn and her close relationship with Vivi. Gwyn was an absolute riot and I love her cheeky snark, quippy banter and her casual witchy bad self, and I might've developed a bit of a girl crush. I'm so excited that the second book is about her cos I defo want to see her get her HEA! 🥰

The reason why I'm not giving this book a full five stars is that I wished the ending had been less rushed and that certain elements had been better wrapped up. There were a few family-related revelations that were introduced and don't get the proper attention they deserved. I do wonder if maybe this storyline will continue in the second book as Gwyn is also family, but either way, it all ended a little too quickly, IMHO. There were also certain threads of the story that were left unresolved, such as the situation between Rhys and his father. It was so open-ended and it felt very odd that the author didn't bring some kind of conclusion to their situation.

Overall though, The Ex Hex was a pretty Fun and entertaining read and I'm glad that I finally picked it up!
