Editorial Reviews

Review

"An immersive military space thriller. Balancing classic political machinations with naval maneuvering and battles edging towards the speed of light, this novel may be science fiction, but it has a firm base in a reality that military fiction readers will enjoy. The unpredictable relationships, epic context, and action-heavy prose of this novel make it an entertaining and original escape. For the first book in a series, Spearman has created a sprawling world with huge narrative potential." Self-Publishing Review, ★★★★

Story reads like you’re sitting around a campfire being told a great epic tale by Stan Lee. As a guardians of the galaxy, star wars, and patriotic/military movie and lore fan, this tale really hit the spot. Author Spearman does a great job of helping the reader spatially visualize the battles. The writing constantly keeps us aware of whose who(relative to how it matters to the plot and character placement), whose where(setting wise), and what they’re doing in each scene so we can feel the stakes and anticipate what can or will happen next. However, I will say the key to reading this novel is keeping up! It is fast paced and rich in details. I also enjoyed that we got a lot of glimpses into the everyday affairs of many different characters which helped me visualize life as a whole of a navy officer of the future but also helped me distinguish the characters from one another because many of their actions were consistent with the traits the character possessed. For example, I loved every scene with Pru. You stand at attention like everyone else around her when her name comes across the page and you come to expect that because her Demeanor came in hot from the beginning. I loved the commanding, confident nature and presence that she possessed. This book has real star quality and I look forward to reading what happens next!

An unusually complex storyline which seems to follow a “two steps forward, one step backward“ for each story thread in the series. As a result, there are unresolved issues at the end of this installment though less of a “hanging ending” than it could be. Decent character development and consistently stable tech help move the story forward. It will be interesting to see how the story progresses in the next book.

Loved the framework, the characters and the plot. Pike is a great leader thrown into a disaster of epic complexity. I can't wait to start book 2!

The main character leads with skill. The protagonist are easily identified, and karma catches up to them in the end. (Good guy Bad guy)
The action is good and the humor delights.

Sandy is basically Honor Harrington with man parts. Always more right than anyone else, fearless, tactical genius, etc. Still worth reading though. Spear man could use a good editor as the text can be clunkuy

In this book it seems like the deck is always stacked against Sandy! Some how he always makes it out of trouble, plus advances his situation. I loved the training exercises and can actually see real life applications. It’s a great space opera. However, can we just shoot the politicians?!

I like Sandy, I also think he thinks too much. But then again better too much than not enough. What really frustrated me was not just echoes but sometimes the exact same words, sentences, alinea’s, accidents, birthday presents as in the previous series. Having said that I still liked ready about Sandy Pike. But what’s stopping me is the price tags on these books, I mean 9 - 11$ for each one is way too much. I would buy them if they were in the range of 4 - 7$. More’s the pity for John Spearman and Amazon for setting up these kinds of prices for “small” ebooks.

Generally well written with a likeable hero and plot. I am definitely going to read the follow on stories. Well worth reading!
