From the author of the breakout thriller Every Last Fear, comes Alex Finlay's electrifying next novel The Night Shift, about a pair of small-town murders fifteen years apart—and the ties that bind them.

“The night was expected to bring tragedy.” So begins one of the most highly-anticipated thrillers in recent years.
It’s New Year’s Eve 1999. Y2K is expected to end in chaos: planes falling from the sky, elevators plunging to earth, world markets collapsing. A digital apocalypse. None of that happens. But at a Blockbuster Video in New Jersey, four teenagers working late at the store are attacked. Only one inexplicably survives. Police quickly identify a suspect, the boyfriend of one of the victims, who flees and is never seen again.
Fifteen years later, more teenage employees are attacked at an ice cream store in the same town, and again only one makes it out alive.
In the aftermath of the latest crime, three lives intersect: the lone survivor of the Blockbuster massacre who’s forced to relive the horrors of her tragedy; the brother of the fugitive accused, who’s convinced the police have the wrong suspect; and FBI agent Sarah Keller who must delve into the secrets of both nights—stirring up memories of teen love and lies—to uncover the truth about murders on the night shift.
Twisty, poignant, and redemptive, The Night Shift is a story about the legacy of trauma and how the broken can come out on the other side, and it solidifies Finlay as one of the new leading voices in the world of thrillers.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"The Night Shift is a masterpiece of misdirection and misplaced motivation, further establishing Finlay as a literary force to be reckoned with." ―Providence Sunday Journal
“A suspenseful tale of vengeance, brotherly love, teenage romance, and the perils of jumping to conclusions. Finlay spins it at a rapid pace, his characters well-drawn and his tangled plot expertly developed. The twists arrive at a dizzying pace, and when the killer is finally revealed, few readers are likely to see it coming.” ―Associated Press
"Encompassing the genres of thriller, mystery, and horror, The Night Shift is a novel that will stick with you." ―Reader's Digest
"[Finlay] has outdone himself with this latest... [He] grabs readers from the very first line and keeps them propulsively turning pages with absolutely thrilling cliffhangers." ―Newsweek
"Fans of dual-timeline thrillers with intricately connected characters will love Finlay’s fast-paced tale that delivers one stunning surprise after another. " ―Library Journal (starred review)
“Every Last Fear became one of our favorite thrillers of 2021 and Finlay's new release about a pair of small-town murders 15 years apart that may be connected is every bit as electrifying. Add in some Y2K nostalgia―R.I.P. Blockbuster!― an exploration of lasting trauma and a final twist you won't see coming, and it's safe to say Finlay is one of the genre's most exciting voices.” ―E! News
“Alex Finlay returns with the tense, edge-of-your seat thriller The Night Shift . . . . Finlay does a masterful job of diving deep into each character’s thoughts and emotions in tight, fast-paced chapters. . . . Fans of Grady Hendrix and Riley Sager will tear into this sophomore-slump-defying thriller.” ―BookPage
“Every line counts in this cunning cat’s cradle of a thriller. Alex Finlay has the knack of combining forward motion with powerful emotion.”―Sunday Times (London)
"Finlay does a fine job weaving the tangled lives and crimes together in a suspenseful tale... Thriller fans will eagerly await Finlay’s next." ―Publishers Weekly
“Finlay’s newest thriller delivers a one-two punch of 90’s nostalgia and gripping, genuinely unputdownable plotting, and ties it all together with characters whose intertwining fates―and secrets―will keep you hooked from the book’s first page to its very last.” ―Crime by the Book
“Instead of succumbing to the pressure that comes with a sophomore release (following last year's highly anticipated Every Last Fear), Finlay embraces that buzz and tension with his latest release The Night Shift, and transfers all that potential angst onto his characters. From the book's opening scene, the tension never lets up.” ―The Big Thrill
"[H]ighly recommended for readers looking for fast-paced, twisty thrillers." ―Mystery Tribune
“Wow, this is crime fiction at its best. Instantly immersive, pacy and propulsive, and full of surprises. Alex Finlay is the real deal, believe me.” ―Lee Child, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author
“The Night Shift weaves together two crimes, past and present, into a fast-paced, page-turning, slam-dunk of a thriller. An exciting, entertaining read that I couldn’t put down!” ―Samantha Downing, #1 Internationally bestselling author of My Lovely Wife and For Your Own Good
“With an unforgettable cast of characters and a plot that races through twist after twist, Alex Finlay’s explosive new thriller, The Night Shift, will grab you and not let go until the final, electrifying conclusion. I can’t remember the last time I tore through a book so fast, or how many times I thought I knew what was going on only to be proven wrong yet again. You know you’re in for a wild ride when one of the narrators ends up dead in the first chapter…Fans of Riley Sager and Grady Hendrix are going to LOVE this book.” ―Julie Clark, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Flight
“A terrific thriller, tautly written with compelling characters. I was totally hooked." ―Peter James, New York Times Bestselling Author
“In his second novel, The Night Shift, Alex Finlay takes his place in the upper ranks of thriller writers. From the very first chapter, Finlay expertly grabs the reader’s attention with a horrific mass murder at a Blockbuster store in 1999. Flash forward fifteen years later, the events of that dreadful night echo in a small New Jersey town, with lots of unanswered questions and theories of what happened. Then, a similar mass murder takes place at an ice cream shop, and the lives of several people―from investigators to survivors―interact in dramatic fashion. Filled with crisp dialogue, incredible suspense and memorable characters, The Night Shift is one not to miss. Highly recommended.” ―Brendan DuBois, award-winning and New York Times bestselling author

Fast-forward fifteen years later and an attack with an unsettling amount of similarities occurs at an ice cream parlor in the same town, which seems to have its share of buried secrets waiting to be uncovered by gutsy, fierce Agent Sarah Keller, who even when very pregnant with twins is still a certified, unrivaled powerhouse, and her assistant, Atticus. The one surviving girl from 1999, Ella, also becomes involved in the case, as she now works as a therapist and connects with Jesse, the sole survivor of the most recent attack. She reaches Jesse in ways others can’t as they have both experienced the terror of feeling alone and lost, without anything consistent enough to console them. Ella and Jesse have also had to be strong and maintain a certain level of grit when it comes to approaching crises so they have many avenues in which their narratives can relate and converge.
The story only remarkably builds as it progresses and goes some pretty thrilling, yet chilling, places. The cast of characters were ones to wholeheartedly root for and embrace fiercely, with every turn feeling believable, enriching, and unveiled at just the right pace. This was an immersive read from start to finish, which really made me question what it is to lose the ones you love, with only a tragic memory to remember them by, or to think one thing, and then, only years later, to devastatingly learn another.
There is beauty in self-advocacy that each of these characters, in different ways, actively discovers as they go on their own journeys to find closure where they can and a gentle in-progress acceptance where they cannot. These characters are humanized amidst all the brutality and ways their town is haunted as they grapple with complicated questions of how to go on and be human while living in the aftermath and ongoingness of such wreckage and this story served as a beautiful, timely testament to the spirited strength each of them contained along the way.
Murder at the Blockbuster. I don’t know about you all, but my blockbusters never had this kind of scandalous events happening there. Or maybe I was just too enthralled with the new Mary Kate and Ashley movie that had recently come out and didn’t notice anything!
This was my second book by Alex Finley and I might have loved it even more than the first one! I love how this was told in multiple point of view. Finley did an amazing job with the detective work and an even more amazing job with the perspectives of the public defenders that were working with the clients. I think there are so many books out there that put such a negative spin towards public defender, but Finley actually shows what the work is all about. As someone who is married to a public defender, this is something that we have talked about often when books/movies/TV shows misrepresent public defenders.
I absolutely love Finley’s writing style and the short chapters. I know this is something that I talk about a lot, because I feel like the length of the chapters can make or break a book. If they are too long, then I feel like I get distracted easily and it takes my focus away from the story line. The Night Shift does an amazing job with the storyline and there were so many twists that I didn’t see from a mile away. I wanted to keep reading so I could figure out what was going to happen. I also love how one of his MC is a badass pregnant detective that is witty and charming and reminds you just what all females can do!
I wouldn't be wasting my time writing a review, however, if I didn't think there was hope here. I feel the author is probably commercially driven and part of a larger machine (editors and so forth) to drive product output. I read for the art of it, and I absolutely feel this product was not worth the money -- even though I got this on a deal of the day.

At the end of their shift at an ice-cream parlour, two young employees are stabbed to death and another is injured. It has frightening similarities to an outrage committed in the area twenty years earlier, when four video store staff were stabbed and another was left injured at the end of their shift.
The story is told from three points of view: pregnant FBI agent Keller who is assigned to look at the cold case, but is drawn into the active one too; trauma therapist Ella, the survivor of the first crime, who is asked to support the traumatised survivor of the second; and lawyer Chris, the little brother of the prime suspect for the video store massacre whose disappearance soon afterwards confirmed his guilt in the eyes of all but Chris.
The two survivors have secrets linked both to their assaults and to their difficult childhoods. Chris, the lawyer, is also hiding things. There are plenty of revelations throughout and I didn’t see any of them coming, least of all the big one.
