Cytonic (The Skyward Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 10,683 ratings

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The third book in an epic series about a girl who will travel beyond the stars to save the world she loves from destruction from the author of the Reckoners series, the Mistborn trilogy, and the Stormlight Archive.

Spensa’s life as a Defiant Defense Force pilot has been far from ordinary. She proved herself one of the best starfighters in the human enclave of Detritus
and she saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krell—the enigmatic alien species that has been holding them captive for decades. What’s more, she traveled light-years from home as an undercover spy to infiltrate the Superiority, where she learned of the galaxy beyond her small, desolate planet home.

Now, the Superiority—the governing galactic alliance bent on dominating all human life—has started a galaxy-wide war. And Spensa’s seen the weapons they plan to use to end it: the Delvers. Ancient, mysterious alien forces that can wipe out entire planetary systems in an instant. Spensa knows that no matter how many pilots the DDF has, there is no defeating this predator.

Except that Spensa is Cytonic. She faced down a Delver and saw something eerily familiar about it. And maybe, if she’s able to figure out what she is, she could be more than just another pilot in this unfolding war. She could save the galaxy.

The only way she can discover what she really is, though, is to leave behind all she knows and enter the Nowhere. A place from which few ever return.

To have courage means facing fear. And this mission is terrifying.

I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I write stories of the fantastic: fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers.

Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, comes out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that will see the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and Secret Project Four (with its official title reveal coming October 2023). These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.

November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. The third era of Mistborn is slated to be written after the first arc of the Stormlight Archive wraps up.

In November 2020 we saw the release of Rhythm of War—the fourth massive book in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings—and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same world that bridges the gaps between the main releases. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. The fifth volume, Wind and Truth, is set for release in fall 2024.

Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, and various novellas available on Amazon, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.

I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, come out in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.

Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the Legion series, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. There’s a lot of material to go around!

Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart,The Emperor’s Soul, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.

I was also honored to be able to complete the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm, using Robert Jordan’s notes.

Sample chapters from all of my books are available at brandonsanderson.com—and check out the rest of my site for chapter-by-chapter annotations, deleted scenes, and more.

Honestly, if you're this far into the series and looking at review to see whether or not you're going to continue, I don't know what to tell you. It's similar in terms of tone and pacing to the other two books. If you liked them, you should really already know what to expect at this point.

Too few pew-pew / YA romps like this utterly-accessible joy-of-a-book actually delve into mental health, emotional well-being, and adulthood so well.

I feel like I learned things from these characters. Didn’t see that coming. The first couple books in this series were cute, but not startlingly good — but this one definitely took a turn into deep topics.

Well done, mister sands. Well done.

I love how more advanced and exciting the adventure gets in this series, and I’m happy to read more about Spensa and M-Bot and their new friend Chet and the pirates. I loved every moment of this book, and I can’t wait to read the next one.

As always, Brandon Sanderson doesn’t disappoint. If you’ve read the other books in the series this is a must read.

I was not really happy with book two, and I struggled through the first third of this story. But, Sanderson has carefully grown his characters and given them a depth that wasn’t there before. They were children and now they are adults with matching capacities.

As always the prose is straight forward and without subtlety, The story is the payoff and, in the end, not only doesn’t disappoint—it shines.

EDIT: I have thought about this constantly and have decided on a 3.5/5* for this novel. My review stands, but as it’s all connected within the Cytoverse, I still found enjoyment.

Original thoughts from December, 2021. Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson. I think I’ll leave this one unrated for a while, I’m just not sure exactly how I feel about it. In a way, it bothered me that it was said that the novellas were not necessary to the story, but then this one went on to be almost entirely unrelated to the prior story. It didn’t progress the DDF at all, meanwhile the novellas did. This entire novel has the feeling of a fantasy/scifi dream sequence—which is something I actually loathe in those kinds of stories. Then to make it worse, the story itself also kind of had those sequences for real too? But at the same time this story still has all the heart and fun that is Spensa and M Bot, which is why I’m not sure what to rate it. I both enjoyed this one, and also realize that it is kind of a 400+ page filler novel. Also, if you haven’t done these audio yet, stop doing yourself a disservice, Suzy Jackson should narrate everything.

Have you read this yet? How did you feel about it?

I really enjoyed this book and I’m so sad I have to wait for the next one.

This story takes part in a new setting, like every book of this series so far. New setting, new rules, new friends, as usual. I guess this helps Sanderson differentiate and keep our interest.
I am frankly not so sure I agree. I mean yes, it is interesting but it’s also disorienting to change all the rules again and again.
Still, the new world is appealing and has a lot of interesting ideas that help add to the depth of the story. I must admit it’s very well done.

We are also facing the largest changes and evolution for our cast. Maybe a bit hastily and not well explained concerning Spensa’s powers, but I guess it’s well done for M-Bot and in Spensa’s case it was hard to explain properly. All the protagonists change though and evolve.

The most interesting part of this book is the main storyline progression. Everything is uncovered almost all the secrets told, explained and actually make sense (didn’t expect anything from less from Sanderson). To be 100% frank, I don’t fancy the whole explanation but it’s a hard one to pull, so I can accept it. In any case you get to know everything so I guess the last book (last?) will be about confronting the Superiority.

Why 5/5? Well, I just couldn’t stop reading. If there is a book that hooks you up so much, what more do you need? The other reason, other than the amazing execution on all levels, is how everything lines up. Brandon expertly throws pieces here and there, making you ignore/forget them and then he does his magic and that detail you didn’t pay attention to, becomes the important piece you were missing. He does this in all his stories and you can enjoy it here so well. Every little detail, every small irregularity matters eventually and it’s so cool.

Finally, another reason for the 5/5 is the ideas presented. Politics, aggression, peace, humanity, AIs all come with an interesting and renewing view of the topics. If you care to stop and think of what you read and the implications and how everything relates with our society, you will be amazed by the food for thought granted.

Still, you already read 2 books of this series, I can’t believe you didn’t like them a lot, so stop reading this review and start the book. You were going to read it anyway, no matter what I wrote!
