The Nightmare Kingdom Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

This is the perfect book for readers who love historical fiction, religious fiction, or dystopian stories based on real events. It received the 5-Star Highly Recommended Medal from the Historical Fiction Press in 2021.

Sofie and her sister Hilde live in the quiet German town of Münster. They want to get married and have loving families. But in 1534 a religious revolution turns their lives upside down.

Münster falls under the sway of The Prophet, a religious fanatic who dreams of ushering in the Second Coming of Christ. The town becomes a surreal nightmare where polygamy is legal but personal possessions are not. Soon, Sofie must choose between the man she loves and a lifetime with one of the Prophet’s lackeys, whom she loathes. But if she chooses love, Sofie forfeits her ability to protect Hilde when Hilde unwillingly becomes one of the Prophet’s wives.

At the same time, the forces of the Holy Roman Emperor besiege the town, ordered to destroy it for its religious rebellion. Sofie realizes that saving her sister requires saving the city of Münster, too.

I’m not sure why, but I thought this was going to be a fantasy novel. Probably because I know nothing about history and the blurb sounded too fantastical to be real. But real it was, which made it more of a horror story than anything else, because of the horrific things that were done to innocent people. Knowing nothing of this time period made every bit of it terrifying. I can’t understand how any of the characters made it through to the end. (no spoilers!)

Obviously, I cannot comment on how accurate or inaccurate any of the historical aspects are in this book but to me, the author brought the entire story to life. What a tragic existence the people of Muenster had at this time. At times, I wanted to cover my eyes, like when watching a horror film, but then well, I wouldn’t have been able to find out what happened next, so alas, no eye-covering. And I assume the amount of violence is what did take place in that time, and therefore, I’d like to warn readers who have triggers, that while there are other books that are far gorier, this book does have violence against women, including rape (though not on page and only barely mentioned). Nothing gratuitous, only that which was needed for the story and nothing described in detail.

All of that out of the way, I thoroughly enjoyed The Nightmare Kingdom. I learned a lot about history during this time period, how people lived, the politics of the time, how soldiers fought, and just about daily life in general. I’m always up for learning about how regular folk lived in the past. They don’t really teach that in school – at least not when I was in school, and it’s always been an interest of mine.

I also loved the story itself, and two young women are the main characters, even though at that time, women had little power. These women were strong and had such beautiful hearts. I fell in love with them and their family. I was rooting for them, their family, and friends throughout this tragic adventure.

The story is very well written and the author has a masterful way of weaving the plot into a web of political and religious deceptions to control a group of people, reminiscent of certain aspects of current day politics. Terrifying, to say the least!

I highly recommend The Nightmare Kingdom for all the reasons stated above, and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

Well, I gave this a 4 star because I didn't actually finish the book. I gave up at about 25% so it doesn't seem fair to give a low rating. But I would say 3 stars is probably more accurate.

The book seems to just be about 2 girls in the middle of an Anabaptist revolution/uprising in Munich in the 1500s. Unfortunately, at 25% in, it didn't feel like their story, it was history happening around them, and their Uncle would come home and tell them what was happening. It really just felt like a history lesson barely concealed in a fictional story. I did do a little research and it does seem pretty historically accurate, so if your looking for a history on the Anabaptist origins, this might be a good read, but for a fictional story it falls a little flat.

I finished this novel last night and wasn’t disappointed. I’m a history buff and I had no prior knowledge about the events leading up to and during the Anabaptist movement and siege of Munster. This novel did a good job explaining events (Peasant Revolt, Anabaptism) through the course of dialogue between main characters. It shows the fanaticism of the leaders of the movement and how they held the population hostage in Munster. The general population were in a very difficult position due to the violent enforcement of religious law by John of Leiden and also by the “take no prisoners” mentality of the besiegers. I will admit that the novel was a bit of a slow burn, but once the final 100 pages came along, it really picked up. I highly recommend this novel and for anyone interested, it’s a good history lesson.

Rob Bauer's latest novel, The Nightmare Kingdom, tells the story of the darker aspects of the Protestant Reformation in sixteenth century Germany. Well-researched, the novel paints a disturbing picture of the Münster rebellion, which was led by a group of radical and unscrupulous Anabaptists. Told from the viewpoint of a young woman whose family is negatively impacted by the rebellion, the characters are relatable and the story is compelling. If you want to learn about the grim history of this era, this book is for you! Additionally, the story of Sofie Gresbeck and her family's horrific treatment under this particular group of delusional Anabaptists offers a timely commentary on our contemporary society.

What a fantastic story. It's part dystopian, part fantasy, a dash of romance, and a splash of adventure. Most importantly, it's a part of our world's real history that I've not previously explored.
The novel is extremely well written as the author manages to weave actual facts with a fantastic storyline with skill.
This is one of the best novels I've read this year.

5-stars.

As sad as it is, wars involving religious beliefs are all too real. We often view historical events such as what is written about in this book, The Reformation, as something that happened because of extreme intolerance and such events wouldn't happen today, but that is definitely not true. We see it happen all too often in today's society.

Rob Bauer writes an interesting account of what life might have been like during the 16th century amid turbulent times in the Church. His characters have depth and much appeal to the reader. I especially appreciated the strong relationship between Sofie and her sister Hilde. I felt pulled into the story and could imagine the events easily. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend.
