Meet Me In Maine: Book One of The Blue Harbor Series Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 61 ratings

New Edition

Elizabeth Reading and Scarlett Harding travel from New York City to Blue Harbor, Maine, hoping to purchase a bed-and-breakfast in a peaceful town, but what they discover is much more sinister.

After settling into an apartment building and unpacking, Elizabeth and Scarlett visit a local ice cream parlor. As they approach the counter to order, a man rushes through the doorway, clutching his throat and dying in a pool of blood at Elizabeth's feet. When the police arrive, Elizabeth stares at the dashing, blue-eyed David throwing questions at her, stunned that she agreed to a date with him a few hours ago.

When they return to the apartment and Elizabeth begins to pack her bags to leave Blue Harbor, Scarlett pleads with her to keep the appointment at the inn. The next day, they fall in love with the quaint inn and eventually sign the papers, despite Elizabeth's misgivings about the death a day earlier.

After they move into the bed-and-breakfast, they hear of residents dying under unusual circumstances and rumors of a curse placed by the Penobscot Indians on the descendants of the town's original settlers. On their first weekend as innkeepers, a violent storm hits, and two guests are slashed to death in their beds. Then the lights go out.

Will Elizabeth and Scarlett sell the inn or stay and fight the curse alongside their new friends as bodies fall around them?

Hi, I am an author of paranormal suspense. In my first series, The Dead Game Series, the dead walk the night & into the day, leading our heroines on a dangerous adventure from Florida to Quebec.

The Blue Harbor Series offers a new set of heroines who fight to save their town from an Indian curse. The first book, Meet Me In Maine, uncovers the perpetrator of the curse and the plight of the Penobscot culture at the hands of the white man.

Meet Me In Maine's new edition contains two bonus chapters with Scarlett's and Elizabeth's stories, revealing why they chose to settle in Blue Harbor. I also have a special treat for you, My Last Year, written by my Maltese Nounous.

Please sit back, put up your feet, and let me bring mystery and romance to your lives.

This book starts out in a hurry! Meaning there is no dilly-dallying! The lead characters, Elizabeth and Scarlett, leave a failed relationship and bank manager job, respectively, and head to Maine to fulfil a desire to own a bed and breakfast on the very first page.

This was a very fast paced book that was full of action from start to end. On the girls very first day in the new town, they begin to encounter paranormal activity that is the result of a curse that the town is under. It is the home of demonic acts, shapeshifters, etc, intent on keeping the curse alive.

The storyline was truly interesting, however, in my humble opinion, a little too rushed. I felt the relationships they began, again on their very first day in town, weren't realistic, and some of the scenes were again so fast paced that, for instance, a character sits down to eat and with only a few lines of dialogue exchanged, they've completed their meal.

I also found it a little hard to keep track of who was who at times with the plethora of though, diverse and intriguing, characters, add in the shapeshifting and demons taking over bodies and it was challenging.

That being said, the few things I mentioned above were the only reasons I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars. As I mentioned, there are wonderful characters, tons of action, an interesting storyline, and to me the best part was that I did not figure out who the bad guy was until it was revealed! It was a shocker, and THAT'S a major plus!

    CONTENT:
Adult: There are hugs and kisses, and I believe a night ot two of overnights but only implied.

Drugs: Nothing that I recall except some cocktails sporadically throughout the book.

Violence: The book is full of violence that is crucial to the story and the curse, but it's not overly graphic.

Language: There was no bad language at all, that I recall.

Christian: There was no mention of God, prayers, church or anything of that nature that I recall.

I didn’t know what to expect from Susanne Leist’s Meet Me in Maine. I was expecting a cozy mystery with some paranormal elements. I got that and a lot more. This is also an increasingly intense, fast-paced mystery/thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat until the end.

The action is non-stop from nearly the first time Elizabeth Reading and Scarlett Harding set foot in Blue Harbor, the small Maine town where they intend to become the proud owners of a local bed and breakfast inn. They’ve left the hectic world of New York City for a quiet, rural life in this Maine coastal haven. But that’s not what they find. They discover early on that Blue Harbor is inundated by a curse that started centuries ago when the original settlers usurped Penobscot Indian land. There are, though, no real ancient or contemporary Native American details to be found. And the only Penobscot Indian character in the novel is killed off. It’s not Native American Literature, despite its label on Amazon.

Meet Me in Maine is really Elizabeth’s story, and she is the one who narrates the novel, except for one chapter at the height of the action in which she doesn’t appear. Minutes after Elizabeth and Scarlett arrive, they meet tall, handsome locals and become instant couples. We have to be willing to accept that this could happen instantly so soon in the story, but this is not strictly a romance.

The “curse” is never explained in detail, and the reasons for its recurrence at this particular point in the town’s history are a bit vague. What we do know is that it results in pillars of salt, fires, explosions, devastating snowstorms, shape-shifters, and lots of dead bodies. It seems that each primary local character is involved in stopping the violence, which they generally do with more violence. Every character we get to know in any detail is in danger from the start. Meet Me in Maine is so full of characters, in fact, it’s sometimes difficult to keep them straight. But Leist doesn’t allow that to undermine the tension that builds rapidly until the surprise ending.

Meet Me in Maine, the first of Leist’s Blue Harbor Mysteries, is not perfect. Not many novels are. But Leist adroitly pulls the reader into the middle of the action at the start, and we find ourselves turning pages rapidly to see what happens next—even though we should be doing other things. That’s the sign of a compelling read.

I had not read anything by author Susanne Leist before but had noticed this book and decided to give it a shot. I was not disappointed. The novel revolves along the fictional town of Blue Harbor Maine. Two young women, disillusioned with life in the city decide to relocate to this town and buy an already established bed and breakfast. Upon arriving in town, they are immediately brought into a spiderweb of chaos and intrigue. The novel is fast paced and energetic, leaving the reader to wonder what might happen next. The characters, especially Elizabeth and David, are well structured and provide the story with a romantic twist that pivots back and forth until finally resolved at the end of the book. The supernatural element, regarding the old inhabitants of the land (The Penobscot tribe) is ever present throughout the book and gives it an archaic type of atmosphere. I enjoy novels with a historical background. As I am a New Englander and well familiar with the Penobscot, and Abenaki history of Maine this side story was interesting. If you are looking for a well-constructed novel that is written in the same vein as Salem’s Lot, I highly recommend this book. A well-deserved 5 stars.

Elizabeth and her friend, Scarlett, decide that they would like to buy a bed & breakfast somewhere away from the big city. Both are looking for a more quiet life and the Blue Harbour area of Maine sounded just right. However, they aren't there long before they learn that the area is cursed. Elizabeth wonders whether they should leave and find a more suitable location, but Scarlett is keen to stay where they are, so they go ahead and buy the quaint bed & breakfast they had viewed a few days earlier. In the meantime, Elizabeth meets a David, a rather stunning young lawyer, while Scarlett is rather taken with the owner of the local ice cream parlour. But then, things the two women never thought possible, begin to happen and they wonder whether they will survive the curse.
I really enjoyed this novel. I got caught up what was happening to the two women and didn't want to put the book down. A good read.

After breaking up with her boyfriend, twenty-four-year-old Elizabeth, together with her pal Scarlett, leaves town to pursue her dream of running a bed-and-breakfast in dreamy Blue Harbor in Maine. On arrival, Elizabeth draws the attention of David Hunt, a good-looking lawyer, and Scarlett arranges a date with the debonair owner of the ice-cream parlor. Everything seems perfect... But then things become ominous and sinister. Explosions, a series of unexplained, scary deaths, supernatural powers, shapeshifting... An ancient curse also comes into play... And Elizabeth and Scarlett find themselves right in the middle of it. No spoilers, but there's a great mix of suspense, murderous mayhem and romance in this tightly-knit story. Recommended.
