From the renowned wolf researcher and author of The Rise of Wolf 8 and The Reign of Wolf 21 comes a stunning account of an unconventional alpha male.

A lover, not a fighter. That was wolf 302. A renegade with an eye for the ladies, 302 was anything but Yellowstone’s perfect alpha male. For starters, he fled from danger. He begged for food from other wolves, ditched females he’d gotten pregnant, and even napped during a heated battle with a rival pack!

But this is not the story of 302’s failures. This is the story of his dramatic transformation. And legendary wolf writer Rick McIntyre witnessed it all from the sidelines.

As McIntyre closely observed with his spotting scope, wolf 302 began to mature, and, much to McIntyre’s surprise, became the leader of a new pack in his old age.

But in a year when game was scarce, could the aging wolf provide for his family? Had he changed enough to live up to the legacies of the great alpha males before him?

Recounted in McIntyre’s captivating storytelling voice and peppered with fascinating insights into wolf behavior,
The Redemption of Wolf 302 is a powerful coming-of-age tale that will strike a chord with anyone who has struggled to make a change, big or small.

“With this third installment of Rick McIntyre’s magnum opus, the scope and ambition of the project becomes clear: nothing less than a grand serialization of the first twenty years of wolves in Yellowstone, a kind of lupine Great Expectations.”—Nate Blakeslee, New York Times-bestselling author of American Wolf

“A great choice for anyone who has a fondness for wolves and an appreciation of good natural history.”

“No one else’s books have been written with the depth of time, personal insight, and sheer unstoppable devotion that Rick McIntyre brings to the page.”
—Carl Safina, author of Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace

“This engrossing tale of an especially intelligent and charismatic wolf reveals a deep and important lesson: for wolves as for humans there is more than one way to lead a good life.”
—Barbara Smuts, canine researcher and professor emerita, Psychology, University of Michigan

“No one knows more about Yellowstone wolves than Rick does, and no one tells their wild stories better. His new book combines his knowledge and storytelling skills to give readers an unparalleled look into the lives of Yellowstone’s wolves.”
—Rick Lamplugh, author of In the Temple of Wolves and Deep into Yellowstone

“A vivid tale of wolf personalities, scientifically compelling and deeply engaging, that will take you right to the core of wolf social life.”
—Luigi Boitani, professor emeritus, University of Rome

“A remarkable achievement. It will be a long time, if ever, before someone can match such insightful perspectives on the behavior of wolves in the wild.”
—Lu Carbyn, author of The Buffalo Wolf

About the Author

No one has spent more time observing and documenting wild wolves than retired National Park ranger Rick McIntyre, who has watched wolves in America's national parks for more than 40 years, 25 of those years in Yellowstone, where he has accumulated over 100,000 sightings. McIntyre's other books include The Rise of Wolf 8 and The Reign of Wolf 21, and he is at work on a fourth book about Wolf 06 and other Yellowstone alpha females. He lives in Silver Gate, Montana.

I met a wolf observer in Lamar Valley who showed us the first wolves we had ever seen. After talking for a while he recommended this author and this was the first book I chose to read. Looking forward to reading more.

It's so wonderful to receive a good book in great condition, right on time and know that it has been recycled!

I have been drawn to wolves most of my life, leading me to study them off and on for years. I bought the 4 books of this series and can't say what compelled me to start with this one. The story of an imperfect being growing into something more must be timely. This book is amazing! Probably a little more so to a wolf lover, but it is a great read for anyone. Sometimes you can read a book and just feel the quality of the person who wrote it. Rick McIntyre gave us a beautiful book with more heart than I have the words to describe. I would love to meet him someday.

This book is the 3rd book in the series and it just was on a different topic than the other 2 books before it I felt like it just wasn't as exciting but still a definite must read a great series for kids or teenagers. Thumbs up 👍 👌 👏

This was a different type of story. Taking wildlife observations and creating a narrative. Definitely an interesting way of presenting the work. Now I may need to look for the video

We purchased the first book this summer while visiting Yellowstone. I found myself sobbing in the car on our way home, finishing the story. We immediately ordered book 2 and read it as soon as it was delivered and once we found out about book 3 we pre-ordered it and impatiently waited. As with all of his books, this one does not disappoint. The knowledge and insight he posses is without compare. My daughter and I both learned so much about wolf behavior and the difficulties they face. Our love for them was strengthened and that activist spirt raised up in us. I’m thankful we found these books and for the beautiful way Rick tells their stories. You cannot help but to fall head over heels in love with individual wolves or to help the feelings of heartbreak at each loss. Get this series!!!! Looking forward to the next one.

Engagingly written true story of a remarkable Alaska wolf and the rotten man who murdered it. If you love dogs you will love this book.

This is the third book in the series. I ordered in advance of publication and was not disappointed. If you love wildlife and the American outdoors this is a book for you. Rick takes on the drama and life around wolf 302. This story will spellbind and encourage you. It paints a picture of heroes, villains and transformation. This is not some dry book on wolf biology. Rather it is the story of a life which will educate us in Wolf biology. I sad when I came to the end of the book and excited for the next in the series.

Always wonderful to read Rick McIntyre. Through his dedication and ability to share his observations a glimpse into the "world of wolves" is possible. I'll pre-order anything Rick writes. Please Rick...another book to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars A renegade turned hero!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 7, 2023
Wolf 302 was able to charm the ladies, but ran at the first sign of trouble. Not a wolf you would normally think would do good, but in later life this wolf was a true hero to his family. Loved this book along with the previous 2.
Well worth a read.
