Editorial Reviews

From the Author

When I began reading Anne Lister's journals it was amazing to discover a woman who acted like a free man, talking to tenants, farmers and engineers, walking through the snow, and lifting rocks - in the early nineteenth century! The journals were so compelling that I had to keep on reading to see what happened next!Of course I had to learn to read copperplate handwriting and the secret codes before I understood everything - but it was worth it!Dear reader, you may struggle initially with the journal entries and letter in this book, but keep going. The people in this book were real characters, just like me and you.

From the Inside Flap

Born in 1791, Anne Lister was brighter and more intelligent thanher brothers, and as she grew she realised that she regarded women as the other sex. Sent to Boarding School at her Aunt's expense, and bannedfrom the girls' dormitory, she slept alone in an attic room called the'slope'. When Eliza Raine arrived she was also rejected from thedormitory because she looked and acted Indian, so she joined Anne in the "slope'.Twelve hours a day of lessons, including Saturdays, and two church services on Sundays became exciting to Anne and Eliza asthey shared a bed at night and talked about their lives to date. Moreimportantly they talked about their futures: each one would have tomarry for their families, and give up their fortunes and theirindependence. Instead they decided to marry each other: Anne couldprovide the social circle and the family, while orphan Eliza wouldprovide the money. Two years later a teacher discovered theirardent love affair and banished Anne so that Eliza's education couldcontinue. So they started recording letters and parcels to each other.Eventually they were writing journals. But the affair didn't work out as planned ...
