Sand to Glass (Tales from the Mythusian Empire) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

“A tight examination of the line between monster and human.” Foreword Reviews

Somewhere at the edge of the Great Being’s dream lies a desert kingdom ruled by four young siblings. One burns with rage like fire. One battles monsters to make his siblings smile. One laughs with ruthless charm. One itches with desperation. All teeter on the edge of madness.

In Remy Apepp’s harrowingly beautiful Sand to Glass, the Kingdom of Ordyuk finds itself faced with destruction. Endlessly attacked by accursed beings, the kingdom relies ever more heavily on the four siblings. Under such a weight, their only choice is to grow into monsters themselves—

Or to shatter like glass.

Editorial Reviews

Review

" The characters ... learn and change and grow, becoming both stronger and more damaged, simultaneously combating monsters and their own psyches. What remains is a fascinating close-knit character study that avoids any hint of cliché, spoon-feeding, or foolishness." Anna Winslow, Fantastical Things

Remy is fond of understatements. Some of Remy's favorite understatements include the following:

Remy likes writing.

If stories were stars, Remy would want to write an entire night sky full.

Remy writes stories for the same reason explorers adventure into and chart unknown territories—and also for the same reason people treat headaches by drinking water, eating snacks, taking pain meds, going for light walks, and getting rest.

All Remy wants from life is to write stories that touch you in the same place music does; that make you think differently than before; and that linger in your mind as if they'd been written into clay tablets rather than printed on paper or typed on screens.

"Sand to Glass" is a fascinating character study with shifting PoVs that illuminate the story like penlights pointed one by one at the facets of a jewel. The writing surprised me, because it seems very simple at first, but before I knew it I was thoroughly engrossed.

If you like dark, character-driven fantasy, I would recommend it.

Sand to Glass focuses on the inner turmoil of a royal family as they can do nothing to prevent the decline of their kingdom. We get to see and experience the world through every family member's perspective and their true feelings behind everything that happens. This is a new POV that I haven't really come across, and I quickly got used to jumping from one person to the other. The worldbuilding was told in a way that made sense to each character that told it, and if the story weren't about the family itself, I think the author has a really good world to write about.
The one thing that stops me from rating this book better is some of the personal choices the characters make, specifically pertaining form the two eldest siblings. They absolutely make sense for the characters, but it just happened to find my personal niche of ick.
That being said, Remy Apepp can make some truly compelling and sympathetic characters. And the world and culture of the kingdom feel alive and colorful. My husband could tell exactly how the book was going by the expressions on my face. I really, almost want to read the second book just to find out how the world turned out after, but I'm a little too scared that I might not be the reader for this series.

An unsettling fantasy story, about four royal siblings in a kingdom beset by monsters. As they struggle against the monsters on the outside, the monsters on the inside may be the greater danger. The storytelling is lush and lyrical, the images reverberating long after the end of the story.

I enjoyed reading this creative story about the Kingdom of Ordyuk, which is under attack from monsters that are known as the Accursed. One had better hope they are killed by these monsters, because if they survive, then they turn into one of the monsters. And within in this exciting story, the reader gets to know the royal family where each family member has to navigate their prescribed roles within the family and within the kingdom. Who will win -- the Ordyuk kingdom or the Accursed monsters? You will have to read the book to find out.

Sand to Glass by Remy Apepp is a stunning debut novel that takes readers on a journey into a world of fantasy and magic. Set in the Kingdom of Ordyuk, the story follows the lives of four siblings who rule the desert kingdom. Each of them possesses unique traits that make them stand out, but they all share a common goal: to protect their kingdom from destruction.

The story is beautifully crafted, and Apepp's writing style is immersive, drawing readers into the world of Mythusian Empire with ease. The author's use of vivid descriptions paints a picture of a harsh, unforgiving land, where danger lurks around every corner.

The characters are the heart and soul of the novel, and Apepp does an excellent job of bringing them to life. Each sibling has a distinct personality and backstory, and readers will find themselves invested in their individual journeys as well as their collective quest to save their kingdom.

As the novel progresses, the stakes get higher, and the siblings find themselves pushed to their limits. The themes of power, loyalty, and sacrifice are explored in depth, making for a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant read.

Sand to Glass is a fantastic start to the Tales from the Mythusian Empire series. It sets the stage for a larger story while also providing a satisfying conclusion to the events of the novel. Apepp's writing is both elegant and visceral, and the characters will stay with readers long after they finish the book.

Overall, Sand to Glass is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy. With its gripping story line, well-drawn characters, and immersive world-building, it is sure to leave readers eager for the next installment in the series.
