What Happens in Denver Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 56 ratings

Meet Andi Rigby. She and her husband own a famous bar. Andi can mix a cocktail, change a beer keg, soothe ruffled customers, and drink you under the table. Life is good until the day she finds herself divorced and unemployed. After a suitable period of ice-cream and whiskey infused mourning, she heads to a beer conference in Denver on a mission to rediscover her joy and find a new job.

Between fielding gossip, saving a drunk woman from herself, and dodging a hot but ill-advised boozy hookup, the weekend leads to a few surprises. She ends up employed with an unexpected bonus—a new friend. Oh, and the guy she kissed? Turns out her new job includes selling his brewery's beer. No big deal. Except the bit about him being practically perfect for her at a moment she's determined to focus on her own success.

A story of new friends, fresh starts, and a side order of romance served up with a nice cold pint.

What Happens in Denver kept me up way too late reading, just to see what would happen to Andi as she navigated her new adventures and new relationship with James. I also loved reading about Sloane and Michael and loved how Andi and Sloane found friendship despite their vastly different backgrounds. There were so many emotions in this book, and I feel like I really got to know the characters and saw how they were feeling and what they were thinking. I love craft beer so the setting in the craft beer community was fun for me, but would be educational and will still be interesting to someone not familiar. I really like that the book was real - no one fell in love in a week, and no relationship was instantly perfect. Definitely can't wait for Sloane and Michael's (per the author's Facebook page, it's coming)!

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy. Andi Rigby owns a bar with her husband BWI (Beer Wenches) and she finds out from one of her staff that her husband Matt (or dirt bag as I like to call him) that she is being removed from the business and his mistress is taking over. As if that is not enough she finds out she has no way to legally fight him because she trusted him let him handle the business. Many months pass with her hiding from life when her Mom and BF Stella force her to move on and start looking for a job. Andi ends up running into Sloane and saving her from her drunk fest but finding out later that she works at VanAnsel Distrubtors where she ends up getting a job. Andi also meets the Burke Brothers: Michael and James, who own Burke Brothers Brewery. Andi ends up working with James and a friendship grows between them. Sloane and Andi were my favorite characters. I did like Michael and James as well but it was hard to understand James when the only inside scoop you get is Andi. I really would have liked to see what James's thoughts were. I would like Michael and Sloane story. Overall, I liked the story but would have liked more interaction with James and Andi as well as more of James's point of view.

I loved this story. Andi and James seemed to materialize before me. Even Sloane and Michael took on a 3D presence in my head. All of the talk of beers and types and processes went over my head as I rarely drink beer. If this story was not so well-crafted, I would have quit for all the beer talk. I HAD to know how the story worked out. I was thrilled for the end of Matt's story.

This was my first read of any of the books written by Liz Crowe. Her mini-bio points out that among other things, she is an award willing author. Having read her, I can see why.

Without repeating the plotlines in other reviews, let me offer this instead.

The story has an interesting, imperfect, flawed protagonist, which made her that much more interesting.

The cast of characters were also complex and not simply two dimensional cardboard cutouts.

The plot moved quickly with some twists and turns around the multiple conflicts, unexpected opportunities, and friction among the main characters.

The protagonist in particular was often faced with tough decisions, some of which included opposing priorities where either choice had a cost, and her character is revealed in the process.

The author did a great job of capturing the frustrations, hurts, responses, and consequences in what I thought were very realistic.

All in all, I thought it was a great read and recommend it to readers without reservation. As I said in the post, this was my first read of Liz Crowe, but certainly will not be my last. Four and a half rounded up to five stars. If you like romantic stories that are not your typical Hallmark Channel "happily ever after" guaranteed and have more interesting plot lines and better developed characters, this one will not disappoint.

The only caveat I'd offer is it appears this is a stand-alone story, but there is another novel with some of the characters and their involvement which plays a role in this story. "What Happens in Chicago Stays In Chicago." Not needed to enjoy this one but might provide details that would foreshadow events in this one and provide some good background details.

The way this book had a chokehold on me. I was given a complimentary copy and am voluntarily leaving my thoughts, because oh boy. I devoured the entire thing in one sitting. Let me preface this by saying I know nothing about brewing, so this was such an interesting read. It was so cool to see the behind the scenes of sales and marketing for a brewing company. Liz Crowe did a great job immersing us into that world without it seeming like information overload.

This book was laugh out loud funny. So much so that I was actually highlighting jokes to use on my friends later. The one about martinis being like t*ts killed me. You have to read this one purely for that line. Andi, by far, was the queen of quips. She was such a fun main character follow. Despite every unfortunate thing that transpires, she still sticks up for herself and stays loyal to her friends. It was so inspiring to watch her journey from “rock bottom” to finding herself again.

And it wouldn’t be a proper romance without a hot GRUMPY male counterpart. Her swooney love interest was *chefs kiss*. The minute he showed his gooey cinnamon roll interior I was a goner. We love a big burly man that still gets nervous around a pretty girl. By the end I don’t know who really should take the reigning title of Grumpy Love Interest. They both were giving each other a run for their money.

The blurb does a great job summing it all up. I highly recommend this one, purely for the laughs and the cuteness. Is it a little cliche? DUH. Did I still love it? DOUBLE DUH. It follows the romance formula to a tee, but still felt like a refreshing story. I was sad for it to be over.
