Martyr's Promise: A Paranormal Mystery Romance (Elemental Covenant Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 2,002 ratings

Sometimes it takes a monster to hunt a monster.

When Summer Mackenzie and her boyfriend disappear in the fog-shrouded forests of Northern California, it sets off more than one alarm. The sheriff’s department is looking for them, the state rangers are on their trail, and even private security companies have gotten involved.

But Summer wasn’t an ordinary college student; she was a human born into the immortal Mackenzie clan, a line of powerful vampires from the Great Smoky Mountains. Now Carwyn ap Bryn and Brigid Connor are getting messages from allies across the world, old rivals, and new friends, all wanting to know where Summer is and why hikers along the Lost Coast keep going missing.

If Brigid and Carwyn can’t find Summer, tensions between vampire clans might snap, leaving more than just the immortal world bloody.

They might know how to search the wilderness, but the Northern California woods hold more than the average share of mysteries. Secretive immortals, suspicious humans, and ancient myths are all at home in a land where human highways come to a dead end and dense forests meet a rugged coast.

Martyr’s Promise is a paranormal mystery in the Elemental Covenant series by Elizabeth Hunter, USA Today best-selling author of A Hidden Fire, Suddenly Psychic, and over forty other works of fantasy fiction.

I highly recommend this book, and
even if you have not read all the books in this universe, you can read this and enjoy it immensely. Elizabeth Hunter has mastered the paranormal, urban fantasy suspense novel like no one else I've read.

This installment in the Elemental Covenant Series is a
beautiful combination of mystery, romance, and survival. ...a captivating story from start to finish.
—Norma's Nook

Well,
that book was INTENSE. I knew to expect it to be amazing and I wasn't let down.
—Alison, Goodreads reviewer

Is it too cheesy to call this
an explosive new series? Because, well... as it turns out, when you have a fire and an earth elemental vampire teaming up to solve a mystery, things can get... rocky.
—Kathryn, Goodreads reviewer

Martyr's Promise is a homerun. It started with a bang and continued that pace throughout the entire book. It was truly a fast paced page turner.

This was a phenomenal ride in the Elemental Covenant world. I found it vastly different than the first book in the series, and whilst I enjoyed the first book, this was so much more and better.

We are introduced to another clan, a past vampire villain, and Carwyn and Brigid get to hang out with Baojia and Natalie, can we get a hand clap... yipee!!! Do you remember a mention of Katya..... well, we also get to meet her and find a little more about her.

This was a case of being sucked in right from the beginning with Summer and Dani, and finding out really quickly about Summer and her ties to the immortal world. You will have to read the book to find out the rest, but you will not be disappointed. This is action packed, fast paced and a journey into self discovery for one person. There is an opening for another storyline at the end of this book, and I wonder if and how that will come about.

How Elizabeth Hunter comes up with these ideas is beyond me, but the words just rise off the page and build a world around you as if you were living in the book yourself. Everything she writes is immersive, and your surroundings disappear. She is a true artist at her craft, and her books will abduct you and then spite you out at the end, leaving you disoriented and wanting back in. Marty's Promise will do that to you. Highly recommend.

I'm not a reviewer, I'm just a fan and a longtime reader of Elizabeth Hunter's work. My budget is such that I have to be pretty economical and well ... let's just say my library card gets a lot of mileage. But there are a handful of authors that have delivered so consistently over the years (and I can't wait for their books to be avail via library) that I pre-order everything they scribble to support them and to make sure I get my hot little hands on their new works as soon as possible. Elizabeth Hunter is at the top of that list for me. I have pre-ordered all of her books going back the past couple years bc I know she never disappoints and her worlds/characters are so fun to immerse myself in! And let me tell you, this latest installment of the Covenant Series - Martyr's Promise - not only delivered it was incredible!! Getting to spend time with 2 of my fav couples from her other books plus getting to know a new coven and a new bad @ss female protagonists was such a gift! Fun, adrenaline, mystery and lots of action! This book was a very fun rollercoaster penned with a masterful hand! The way Elizabeth Hunter turns a phrase is unmatched. The way she makes you feel like you're right there standing among the big red woods is a gift of traveling via words. In short (though this is already long) if you're wondering if you should buy and read this the answer is yes!! And if you've never read the rest of the series (or the main series all this stemmed from) well then, I'm jealous of you! You get to experience it all for the first time! (And I do recommend that you go back to the start and start there so you get the full experience of knowing the world, the immortal rules and the powerhouse couples that are the spine of this book.) The only bummer is that the end of the book states that Book 3 will be summer 2021 and I think it was a typo and meant 2022 so we have to wait! But that's okay bc Elizabeth Hunter is always worth waiting for, I don't know how her brain can write so many lovely, complex and wonderful worlds but I will always be here for it and for her! Join me ;)

So, I loved this book. Absolutely loved this book. I’ve always enjoyed Brigid and Carwyn, but following Saint’s Passage, I found myself wondering what kind of challenges they would truly be facing in Martyr’s Promise, and in the series going forward. After all, when you have two pretty powerful, well-connected, highly-motivated vampires searching for missing people, how hard can it be to find them?

Serves me right for doubting: as it turns out, it can get quite challenging, especially when the people in question vanish into the misty, isolated stretches of woods around the appropriately named Lost Coast. With no suspects, few motives, too much territory to search, and two powerful vampire clans invested in the outcome, Brigid and Carwyn have their work cut out for themselves. And their enemy’s motivations are even more sinister than it first seems…

Overall, Martyr’s Promise is a great, nerve-wracking-in-the-absolute-best-way ride. I threw my phone, I screamed into pillows, it was delightful.

For those who’ve read Saint’s Passage, I do want to say that this story runs at a much faster, more action-packed pace (which I really loved). There’s a slightly sinister edge to the forest setting that keeps the tension running through much of the book, but it works without ever making things too scary. And then the scenes from Summer’s perspective brought a whole NEW level of tension to the story, which I really, really enjoyed.

I also loved that we got to peek more into the background of the mysterious Katya...as well as learning some intriguing details of a few other, surprise characters.

And of course, it’s Elizabeth Hunter writing Carwyn and Brigid: the banter is perfectly ridiculous, and delightfully on point, right up until you get hit with some incredibly lovely, beautiful line that speaks directly to the soul.

Thrilled as always to have had a chance to read an early copy of this. 10/10, can’t wait for the next adventure!

Ich mochte auch Brigid +C. aber so
wirklich eingefangen hat mich erst dieses Buch. Konnte es nicht zur Seite

jetzt lese ich es noch einmal langsam und aufmeksamer durch. Manchmal möchte man sofort alle Neuigkeiten

I love Brigid and Carwyn. This vampire couple are so wonderful together. You can’t help but get caught up in their banter and antics.
In this instalment of this clever and exciting series we see them solving a disappearance of a young woman and her boyfriend. As always that’s just the surface of what’s going on.
New characters emerge and old ones pop in.
I just love how you come away from reading feeling like you have been in the location of the story. I could see those redwoods.
If you haven’t read the first book it’s ok it can be read standalone, but why deny yourself the excitement of these amazing characters that Ms Hunter gives us.
