4.1 out of 5 stars 60 ratings

“Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead.” –Benjamin Franklin

'The Second List' is a gripping thriller full of plot twists, perfect for the fans of high-paced, international mystery novels.

Patrick Rooper, an investigative journalist and ex-Navy SEAL, is looking forward to his upcoming wedding when a rich socialite walks into his office and offers a lucrative assignment. To retrieve a document from the Swiss Alps seems easy enough for someone with Patrick’s accolades, but unbeknownst to him, the undertaking poses an existential threat to someone powerful—someone desperate to stop him at any cost.

The socialite’s granddaughter, Susan, gets pulled into the unfolding events and narrowly escapes a deadly assassin. When chance unites her with Patrick, the duo must solve the mystery around the document if they want to survive. But with every revelation, the seemingly impossible effort to save their lives draws them even deeper into danger. After a chase halfway around the world, the pair makes a fateful discovery.

About the Author

Max Bridges was born and raised in Switzerland. After successful studies at the renowned Architectural Association School of Architecture, London, and Columbia University, New York, opportunity brought him to Southern California, where he now lives with his wife, two daughters and a dog.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Second List is as good as any of my favorite authors who have succeeded in keeping my attention over the course of their books, and that includes Daniel Silva, Louise Penny, and Michael Connelly. [It] is a wonderful book and it's hard to believe it's [Max Bridges] first novel. I nearly did not put it down from the start and only did so for brief time periods - hurrying back to it as soon as I could. Mr. Bridges presented believable and exciting characters, both compelling good guys and very bad ones. I rate his well-crafted book as a 5/5. If you're a mystery reader, then you'll love it." - West Coast Don, Men Reading Books

"Bridges ably twines
suspense and historical fiction together into a satisfyingly cryptic plot. Historical fiction buffs will particularly relish the plausible World War II-era additions. The author maintains suspense and engages readers with compelling protagonists and mysteries—but the pinnacle in this story is Bridges' skill at melding diverse plot points into one cohesive cliffhanger." - Booklife Review

"The Second List is an interesting, well-written and well-paced thriller that engages from the first paragraph. The reader is immediately invested in the stories of all the main characters, and will be eager to read on to learn more about their fates." - Disha Mistry, Cenveo Publisher Services

From the Author

'The Second List' was quite the project. I started writing this book with only the prologue in mind, not knowing where the journey would take me. Gradually, the story began to emerge, page after page, not only taking the characters, but also myself on a ride that I would not miss for anything. Plagued with a short attention span, often abandoning projects that started with great enthusiasm, the arising mystery kept me on my toes, more so with every word written. It had to, or there would be no 'The Second List' thriller today. After presenting a first draft to my wife Susan, she strongly urged me to drop everything and apply the necessary elbow grease to polish the set story into a final product. I did.

Setting only highest standards for myself, 'The Second List' is a book I am truly proud of, and hope you enjoy reading it as much as I had discovering it.

A thriller and historical fiction novel that bounces between Poland near the end of World War II And present-day United States and Argentina. I was taken by the characters, particularly Tom and Rachel. It’s a fascinating story that keeps you in suspense until the end.

A decent tale. But wow what poor writing. I didn't know who was speaking what language as I was not informed of the character's nationality. The second hero who is Russian is called Tom which is a diminutive of nothing in Russia speak. But worst was the dialogue: No contractions in America speak. "I am going now" or "You are here and will not be able to leave". Plus no character development so everyone sounded the same. And the capital letters: as a character from 1945 says: seriously!

Wildly unbelievable plot. Stayed with it for 95 pages. By then a Soviet army private was conducting a top secret mission, for a general officer, with his own driver. Not even remotely believable.

The book is excellently written as far as the plot and characters go. There is a lot of excellent description and dialogue. However, there are some parts where the pacing slows down too much, and this detracts from the story.
