The Witch Collector (Witch Walker Book 1) Kindle Edition
Every harvest moon, the Witch Collector rides into our valley and leads one of us to the home of the immortal Frost King, to remain forever.
Today is that day—Collecting Day.
But he will not come for me. I, Raina Bloodgood, have lived in this village for twenty-four years, and for all that time he has passed me by.
His mistake.
Raina Bloodgood has one desire: kill the Frost King and the Witch Collector who stole her sister. On Collecting Day, she means to exact murderous revenge, but a more sinister threat sets fire to her world. Rising from the ashes is the Collector, Alexus Thibault, the man she vowed to slay and the only person who can help save her sister.
Thrust into an age-old story of ice, fire, and ancient gods, Raina must abandon vengeance and aid the Witch Collector or let their empire—and her sister—fall into enemy hands. But the lines between good and evil blur, and Raina has more to lose than she imagined. What is she to do when the Witch Collector is no longer the villain who stole her sister, but the hero who’s stealing her heart?
The Witch Collector is book one in a thrilling romantic fantasy series, perfect for fans of Naomi Novik, Sarah J. Maas, and Jennifer L. Armentrout.

Review
A romantic, fraught and fantastic journey through war-torn lands and a deliciously malevolent enchanted forest. I loved the voiceless heroine who wields magical sign language and the tormented hero determined to keep her alive and save an empire. Welcome to a compelling new fantasy world and a truly epic tale!

I read the Witch Collector a little over a year ago. The the moment I started reading it I knew that it would be a favorite of mine for years to come. When it was released in audiobook format I jumped at the opportunity to listen to my favorite story again.
The Witch Collector follows Raina Bloodgood a witch from a small village in the Northern Kingdom of Tiressia as well as the Witch Collector himself, Alexus Thibault. The general premise being that every year the Witch Collector goes to the villages and "collects" the stronger witches. He brings them back to the castle where they serve to protect Tiressia and the Frost King (Colden). They become Tiressia's Witch Walkers. The witches of the village know little of what comes of the witches that are taken from them so when Raina's sister, Nephelle, is taken to be a Witch Walker, it leaves Raina with hatred and anger towards The Frost King and the Witch Collector who took her from their family. Raina sets out with a plan to take down both the Witch Collector and The Frost King but after a string of events The Witch Collector, Alexus, and Raina wind up on the same side going against a greater evil, The Prince of the East.
This book, this series, will always hold place in my heart.
I LOVE the character development that Charissa Weaks gives us. Our FMC Raina grew up fairly sheltered in her small village in the Northern Kingdom. What she knows she has been told in stories from her parents or other villagers. She is not naive in that she does not understand that there are risks and evil out in the greater of the world but she also does not see that there is more to her predicament than the notion that she wants her sister and her family back together. I do love that Raina has always been a little rebellious. She was always the virago that Alexus saw in her, from the time we see her stealing bread, to the weapons/training sessions with Hel and her secret magick use. But once Raina truly understands The Frost King, her sister, Alexus and the Prince of the East, she becomes a force to be reckoned with. Raina with knowledge and power is amazing!
Alexus, oh wonderful, Alexus. Our MMC has a traumatic past that we only begin to see the tip of in book one. For Raina he is gentle, kind and protective but to others he is the hammer to which The Frost King wields. From the start we know that Alexus is out to help guide Raina back to the castle, to Nephelle and Colden, but when at first the mission is out of duty, that changes as they get to know one another. Alexus has so many layers and secrets and it is beautiful to see them melt away for Raina.
The slow burn, tension and energy between Raina and Alexus is palpable and the way that Charissa conveys how they feel to each other and to themselves is heart achingly beautiful.
Out side of the character development the World development is phenomenal. There is so much information that is provided on the work of Tiressia, their gods and the Kingdoms but it is done it such a way that it captivates you as a read.
I do not often read books more than once. I sometimes find it hard starting at book 1 knowing how the following books end or knowing that the series is not over yet. I was worried that after already know the plot and ending to the three current books in the series that I would be bored without the excitement of "what will happen next" but I was COMPLETELY wrong. All the feelings came right back and it solidified my love for this book and this series.
I urge anyone that has not tried to read The Witch Collector to do so. You will not be disappointed.
Raina was the type of FMC that I enjoy reading about and Alexus was a swoon worth MMC. Their slow burn worked for me and I enjoyed the quest/close proximity aspect to their relationship development. Also, Alexus would do anything for Raina and that made me like him even more.
I also I really enjoyed the inclusion of sign language in this story. Including characters who sign is a micro troupe that I really love in books. Weaks did a fantastic job with how she used sign language as dialogue, and I LOVED how she included facial feature descriptions along with that dialogue.
There were twist and turns I did not see coming and I appreciated that as a reader. Sometimes things can be overdone in fantasy books, but The Witch Walker kept me guessing the entire time. I can't wait to see what happens to our group of characters in the next book.
Alexus was the dark and mysterious alpha male that you can't help but fall for. He's rough around the edges and full of secrets but also severely loyal and so caring, especially towards Raina.
Raina is a bad ass female lead that we all would love to be. She's determined and headstrong and feels strongly about family and peace. I loved the growth that is shown for her as the story progresses and as she learns the truth.
The antagonist is one we love to hate, the despicably evil Prince of the East. Also had strong side characters with her sister, best friend and the King.
Looking forward to reading the second book and would highly recommend to others looking for an epic fantasy read!

Characters: Raina, our FMC is smart, resilient, empathetic, headstrong, caring and kind. I also love that Raina is unable to speak and therefore uses sign language to communicate. It also means she uses her hands to wield magic. Alexus, our MMC, is honourable, powerful, humble, honest, and selfless. The side characters were amazing and well-developed.
Plot: As is often the case with high fantasy, the story and world-building is complex and intricate, so you need to have your wits about you. The author recommends making note of anything that stands out because she left many breadcrumbs in this first book! Might be intimidating for some, but I ate it up!
Writing: Charissa has a beautiful way of writing that vividly conveys emotion. Nothing felt like filler, every word was put there for a reason. My favourite parts were when Raina or Alexus described their feelings for each other. At the same time, descriptions or battles were just as vivid, so please check the content warnings, available on the author’s website.
"No, i didn't save you. I only helped you save yourself ".
Complimenti all'autrice per l'originalità. "Fulmanesh, iyuma tu lima, opressa volz nomio, retam tu shahl".
