Magic! Treachery! Violence!

Lady Renna thought the war was over. But a new enemy threatens her lands…

Magically powerful, Lady Renna of the Ren hates the infighting over who will rule the Marches. She’s glad to leave that to the other Half-Elven Powers to bicker over. She prefers to spend her time weaving. Unfortunately, her neighbor wants to use her to become king of the Half-Elven.

Lord Gorsfeld, a rich holder and port owner, craves power. He plots to leverage his odds by gaining control over Renna’s lands, but the lady isn’t easily persuaded. He is forced to resort to drastic measures when Renna refuses his suit.

Defending her people against Gorsfeld’s mauraders forces Renna to use forbidden elf-fire, a capital offense.

Can Renna survive a trial run by the bickering rivals for the crown? Can she save her pet pig when Black Tail's life is at stake?

5* Review: ”Given the medieval-looking society, it's totally believable for there to be tensions over a pig and a conniving lord who wants to take advantage of a neighboring lord's death. And of course messing with the dead lord's daughter is a mistake for all that she'd rather not be involved at all. Basically, I loved it."

5* Review: "First and foremost is Lady Renna and here Theodoratus has given us a protagonist who is refreshingly free of the genres clichés. There’s burgeoning romance, bravery and tragedy with these alone being reasons to pick up a copy and start reading”

Editorial Reviews

Review

A powerful and authentic fantasy The Pig Wars is shrewdly conceptualized, expansiveand propulsive with Theodoratus confidently embracing the requisites of fantasyfiction without the need to revert to time-worn tropes.
A fun read from the start, Theodoratus sets out to do two things: deliver anoriginal story and an adventure that hurtles readers through a series ofexciting encounters. She isn't going for emotional complexity and yet like thebest of reads her narrative foundation is personal and passionate.--
BookViral Reviews

"The plot moves at a brisk pace, with twists and turns that you never see coming. You can't help but root for Renna as she finds herself facing overwhelming odds with seemingly no friends to help her. Renna's growth from an apathetic noblewoman with no discernible interest in politics to someone ready to sacrifice everything for her subjects was one of the primary highlights of the story." --

"The Pig Wars by M. K. Theodoratus was so smooth and easy to read. The narrative is entertaining and humorous at times, which makes it a great way to keep the focus on Rena. Speaking of Rena, she is a sassy, incredibly jaded, and fantastically rounded character. She understands her powers, knows her limitations, and realizes the damage she can do if she is not careful. I loved her relationship with the people of her village and how she relied as much on them as they did on her. I hated Lord Gorsfeld with a passion and loved Rena's pet pig Black Tail. The humor is perfect to cut the tension and make the story more interesting. The dialogues are fantastic, and I loved every time Rena said something. This book is very entertaining!"

"The Pig Wars by M.K. Theodoratus is an amazing world-building experience with such rich characters having amazing abilities. The novel is a very funny and very serious look at a world we know nothing about; a world where magic and teleportation, telepathy, and all those forms of magic are real. The world-building is incredible and the places are so detailed. I found myself transported like the Half-Elven from one place to the next and seeing oceans and fish, the creeks, and the woodlands was exciting. I liked the way the book portrayed the characters. I loved Gorsfeld's complexity in stark comparison to Reena's simplicity. The comedy and the tragedy, the cunning and the deceit made it a fun book to read. I would love to read again, just to take in those sights."

Review

A sprawling fantasy tale unfolding like a thoughtful parable on our own times,
The Pig Wars by M.K. Theodoratus is a femme-driven story of independence,
justice, self-determination, and unsung porcine heroes. Exploring the dynamics
of magical power, feminism, and personal integrity versus pomp and privilege,
this story may be set in the fictional realm of the Marches, but its thematic
messaging reflects the anti-patriarchal sentiments swirling in the minds of
today's readers. -- SPR

Fantasy has been part of my life since I can remember, starting with a fantasy playmate who kept me company while I was locked on the front porch with my toys. My brother, Jerry, still hasn't forgiven me for naming my friend Jerome. Yeah, my mother was a copycat.

My formal introduction to fantasy came with the discovery of the Oz books. I read every one I could find, even if they were larger than the other books brought to our school from the library. I became a serious book buyer when I discovered my dad's army/navy store sold used paperbacks, including authors like A. L. Merritt, Andre Norton, and C. L. Moore--plus my favorite of favorites Leigh Brackett. [Too bad, the real Mars isn't as romantic as hers. Survival on Mercury, anyone?]

Now, I write fantasy about snarly elves, the Half-Elven of the Far Isles, or humans fighting invading demons in Andor.

I'm doing very little social media stuff at the moment, but I do have a website at www.mktheodoratus.com. But you can find me on Facebook, Pinterest [I've got a great collection of Gorey pics], and Twitter.

I am a diehard fan of M.K. Theodoratus, and have read every single one of her fabulous fantasy stories. My only "complaint" has been that I wanted the stories to be longer and for there to be more ongoing series. So finally ... a full length novel that has me totally happy and satisfied!

If you read the book Vengeance, you will recognize some of the same characters and the Far Isles Half-Elven communities.

Lady Reena has reluctantly taken over the leadership of her father's large holding. Though she has very strong magic, she is handicapped with a leg damaged in birth. She is small in stature, very shy and hesitant, feels dreadfully unattractive and is lonely. Her only companion is a black eared, black tailed PIG who makes her home on Renna's hearth. Renna isolates herself as much as possible, focusing on her weaving and avoiding almost everyone.

One of the holding's neighbors is Lord Gorsfeld, a human with NO magic but with big nasty ambitions. He decides that Renna should marry him, give him half-elven progeny and control of her holdings.

Renna is revulsed by him, and when she says no, he starts an insidious campaign to force her to change her mind.

As Gorsfeld amasses an army of half-elven workers and starts strong arming people in the territories around him, the situation becomes worse affecting the community and its livelihood.

On one of Gorsfelds border raids, Renna loses her temper and uses magic that is forbidden. It was a trap and she walked right into it. Now, her life is at stake.

But it is only when the life of Black Tail is also at stake that Renna really reclaims the warrior role she was born for.

I'm not going to do a spoiler here ... but the ending was simply wonderful and totally satisfying leaving a huge smile on my face.

If you enjoy fantasy, get this book. You will fall in love with the characters (even the pig) and the story line will keep you hooked and reading until the last word.

There is a slight hint that there could be another book coming ... MY vote is a definite YES.

The Pig Wars by M.K. Theodoratus is an absolutely delightful read because of the author's undeniable skill of creatively weaving a tale that combines mundane human psyche and magic! I absolutely LOVED how she has managed to create an entire fictional world so realistically and beautifully. You can actually picture the goings on in your mind as you read them.

The characters are well-rounded and developed, and the ending is absolutely feel good and satisfying. The book leaves little to be desired because of the detailed way in which it has been written! We meet Lady Renna, a shy, small woman who just wants to be left alone until what she loves most is at stake, causing the warrior in her to rise and smash all that threatens to take away her precious possessions. And then there's Lord Gorsfeld, the 'would be funny if he wasn't so despicable' next door neighbour with ambitions higher than his intelligence, on a path to usurp Renna's land holdings and use her elven magic for his personal agendas.

I would personally recommend this book to everyone because it is so well-written, which makes for most of the reading experience.

I absolutely loved this book, the characters, the world they lived in, the slight hint of a romance, and… of course…the pig!

This is the first book of a new series and, while I am excited to get in on the ground floor, I couldn’t help but feel there were backstories I didn’t know about. So, I did some research and, voila! There are other stories set in the same world that are available and so I grabbed them all up (it didn’t hurt that they are currently FREE on Amazon! You’re welcome.)

The characters were fully fleshed out and complete with all their good and bad parts on display. I loved Renna. She’s the kind of leader I love – one who gets down with her people and leads by example. It’s obvious how much they love her, and they would do anything for her.

The worldbuilding is amazing. I loved what I could see of it here and am looking forward to finding out more as I dip into the other books of the half-elven.

There are untied ends (not a cliffhanger) but elements that lead me to believe things are going on in the background that we will hear more about in book two. I’m so excited!

The Pig Wars: A Tale of the Half-Eleven by M.K. Theodoratus is a teen and young adult fantasy book. This book is definitely strange. Even from the cover of it and the title, I was already wondering in my mind what this book had in store. There are many genres to this book. There is war. There is fantasy. There is action. There are mythical type creatures. There is adventure. It was quite interesting but also quite strange as well. I am not really sure that I even understood the entire story but perhaps that was just because I was caught up in the strangeness of it all.

There is something very familiar about this book that made it feel incredibly homey to me, which is why I think I took to it so well. It has enough of the aspect of fantasy novels I've loved in the past while still offering a unique plot and characters to make the story fun and engaging. I really enjoyed the main character here and look forward to exploring more of this world as the story (hopefully) goes on. I'd recommend it to anyone that loves a good fantasy story may they be a teen discovering the genre or someone who is 40 years into their love of fantasy.
