A Rebel's Manifesto: Choosing Truth, Real Justice, and Love amid the Noise of Today's World Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 154 ratings

“Sean has a gift for taking tough concepts and bringing them down to earth in practical ways that make a difference.” —William Lane Craig, Ph.D.

Following Jesus has never been harder. In a culture that glamorizes sex, chases fame, and shames those who don’t fall in line, it takes a rebel to be a Christian.

In this book, Sean McDowell aims to encourage and inspire a generation of rebels who will dare to stand up to the madness in a just and loving manner.

A Rebel’s Manifesto offers clear guidance to help people navigate the many moral issues that plague this generation. Students today are oriented toward action on ethical issues, and Sean will not only help them think biblically about various ethical issues, but he will also offer practical steps to make a positive difference in this world. In this book, Sean covers
  • navigating bullying and social media;
  • handling loneliness, pornography, and sex;
  • approaching various conversations around climate change, race, and other controversial issues; and
  • articulating and defending biblical views at school, online, and with friends.
Life doesn’t need to devolve into an online shouting match. Sean proposes a better way: to live a life calmly and confidently grounded in biblical truth.

“Speak the truth in love.”

“Speak the truth in love.”
“Speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15) is a phrase repeated often in “A Rebel’s Manifesto: Choosing Truth, Real Justice, & Love amid the Noise of Today’s World” by Sean McDowell. This is a great guide for having meaningful conversations about today’s most “controversial” or contentious topics. The target audience for this book seems to be college or even high school age students. I would say it is especially helpful for parents raising kids that are going to be asking tough questions, since these topics are so prevalent on social media, in entertainment, and in most other aspects of daily life. McDowell does a great job of laying a foundation of Biblical truth for issues that you can see listed on the “Contents” pages. The message comes down to our call as Christians to speak the truth while also showing the love of Christ to those that disagree with us. He gives great examples from his own personal conversations and debates. I highly recommend this one!

    I particularly appreciated the section on relationships. My niece is a teenager and has been severely struggling with relationships at school. Recently we have become very concerned and even sought out a Christian counselor to help her through this time in her life where things seem very dark for her. The chapters on loneliness and bullying provide biblical examples, as well as suggestions for application that help the reader to at the very least move things in a positive direction. The book is very personal, sharing stories and experiences which help make it authentic and meaningful for the reader. Sometimes just knowing someone can relate to what you are going through can make all the difference.

    This book has been helpful to myself and my family. It’s a valuable resource that provides biblically grounded, ethical solutions and application to help teens and adults as we engage with culture during these difficult times.

    This was a thought provoking book for students and parents trying to help their student children navigate speaking truth in love with the social polarization today. This was a quick read that touches on some hot topics like sex, race, the LGBT community, poverty, immigration, and more. Sean has an incredible gift at narrowing in on each topic and aiming to reach the hearts and minds of his readers. I also enjoy watching his YouTube videos and aspire to communicate with the grace, charity and truth like he does. I highly recommend this book.

    If you struggle to think about the main topics that our culture talks about, that being the topic of Relationships, Sexuality, Ethics, etc. Then this book is for you! It's an easy read, yet it is so informative! And after going over the main topics, Sean McDowell gives you advice on how to talk to others about these difficult issues. This book stays true to the biblical call to love God and to love others!

    Great book, learning how to answer commons questions young people have. Answers biblically, and explain christian worldview instead of the worldview which seems more popular now with your generation.

    ETA: I purchases 2 more copies to share with other parents and their kids.
