Return of the Elf Lord (Kingdom of the Elf Lords Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

Welcome to Midgard and the Nine Worlds. Come continue the saga of the Night Witches with Bernard and Alva in the first book in the Kingdom of the Elf Lords series. Return of the Elf Lord is a spin-off from the Night Witches series.

Three People. Two unforgettable decisions. One fate.
Resistance soldier Bernard Marchand would do anything to bring his family back from the dead, but in his desperation to change their fates, he alters history and nearly destroys the world. Faced with the consequences, he's horrified at what he's done—to his family, to Alva, to the world. It was never supposed to be this way.

As a Huldra, Alva should have stolen her partner's life energy, draining him to the brink of death. Instead, she went against her instincts, losing her heart to Bernard as she helped him win the war against a dreaded enemy. But when he inadvertently starts the countdown to Ragnarok as he twists the chords of fate, Alva will have to ignore the fierce ache in her soul as she fights to save them once again.

And that's just the beginning…

Will they be able to focus long enough to save the world—and the Nine Realms—from the unknown foe intent on blocking their every move, or are they doomed to the horrific reality they unwittingly unleashed?

Return of the Elf Lord, the first novel in the fantastical Kingdom of the Elf Lords series, continues with the magical journey you had with the Flight of the Night Witches series. If you like intense world-building and tension-filled plots with touches of humor and romance, then you will like Heidi Vanlandingham’s spin-off series. It’s a guaranteed unputdownable romantic fantasy thriller.

Fantastic Fantasy Read
I could not put this book down!I am new to the author and her books but I think I’ll be reading more after engulfing this book. Initially, I was intrigued by the beautiful graphics on the cover and hoped the story would be just as intriguing. I was happy to learn that my instincts were right! This book is a fantastic fictional fantasy story that will make for an incredible series with plenty of room to continue building/expanding the plot and the characters.Throughout the book, I found myself mesmerized by the exquisite attention to details. I am always on the lookout for authors who have the gift of creating incredible imagery within their stories, and this author did not disappoint. I was hooked by the cover and upon reading from page one.I thought the book was an easy read and flowed very well. Can I say again that I did not want to put this book down?I enjoyed the chemistry amongst the different characters and often felt as if I was rooting for some and hating on others. To evoke that type of reaction in a reader isn’t easy and honestly kept me enthralled from the get go. This book definitely grabbed my attention and never let go.When the main character, Bernard (Marchand) alters the timeline, I thought of the many stories or movies I have seen in the past regarding timelines, changing history, etc. I immediately thought of the ripple effect and thought, “uh oh.” While I completely understand how someone who has lost people they love would want to go back and change things, the result of such things always seems to have that darn ripple effect and will not always be a positive result. So once the characters attempt to rectify the timeline issue I knew we were in for a bit of drama, suspense, and action. Also, while I’m not a fan of romance storylines since they tend to overshadow or take away from the main story, I did not mind the romance piece in this book. It was well written and implemented into the story. It works well!I think any fantasy fan will thoroughly enjoy this book, but the mix of norse mythology and a bit of world history will also satisfy readers of other genres as well.Overall, this book was incredible and by far one of my favorite reads to date. This is the first book I have read by Heidi Vanlandingham, and I was not disappointed. They way the author mixes Norse Mythology, with American History captures the reader from the first page. Bernard is a World War two veteran that lost everything in the beginning of the war that he loved, his wife and young children. Alva is a Huldra that was cast out along with her sisters when she was young.

Bernard thinks of only one thing when Freyja brings him back to life, why was he brought back and how can he get his family back. When he questions Freyja on why he has been brought back she tells him that his dear friends initially asked but that she had the final choice. He had not completed his true purpose, she questions him about his family, parents, siblings. Something about him seemed familiar but she couldn’t place it but vowed she always figures it out eventually. Alva was taken in by her father after her mother the Queen of the Huldra kicked her and her younger sisters out when she found new love. Now an adult Alva goes to visit her mother but is captured by the fiercest of her cousins, Maya. With the wrong actions but a worthy purpose Alva is held captive by her cousin for nine days before she is rescued by Freyja and her partner. For years the Huldra have been withering away due to lack of their primary source of energy, the life-force from males. Bernard can’t explain it but when he looks at his spy partner Alva, she helps him feel lighter, happier touching her cheek for a moment without thinking before disappearing after her rescue. Alva has never been like the Huldra, she refuses to kill her host taking only enough to survive no more. Lifetimes have passed and thanks to Maya questions are finally being asked, why must they fall in love with the male, losing the bark from their backs and losing their tails only to kill the male taking his life force and gaining the bark and tail back. Gytha the oldest living Huldra remembers a moment when she was young, her mother and grandmother speaking about a “curse”, but time has forgotten the rest. Tells Alva for answers she must travel to visit the Huldra Historian for answers on all she wishes to know.

Bernard set on bringing his family back to life puts odds between him and Heimdall. Alva is the voice of reason within the Huldra castle searching for peace amongst her family. Two actions set a new history in motion, with an outcome no one would have predicted, and why does Bernard see Alva’s face the moment he starts the new path. This book had me craving more, the mixture seemliest meddling together into something amazing. Heidi builds an amazing world and the characters equally amazing. I cannot wait to read the next book Curse of the Elf Lord.

I first laid eyes on this book when it was touring with IBBB. I scribbled down the author and title so I could find it again. It took a little while, but I finally picked up a copy as the cover and blurb was intriguing.

Bernard is a man who finds it impossible to let his family go after they were killed during WWII. He is blinded by rage and sorrow as he puts into motion a plan to save them from their fates. I understood his reasoning, but I wished there had been a few more small scenes of the family together (before or after time changing alterations) to show his emotional connection to them. They seemed a bit like cardboard cutouts which made it harder to see why he did it. (Intellectually, you know he missed them and wanted them to live, but the emotional attachment was a bit lacking.)

That said, I enjoyed the chemistry shared between Alva, his partner during Resistance missions, and Bernard. Maybe their dynamic during the war was explored more in the Night Witches series to which this is a spinoff of, but I think we miss some of that during the start when Bernard is willing to help rescue her, but it really shines in the second part of the book.

Some parts of the puzzle I figured out fairly quickly, but I will not say so it doesn't spoil it for others. I also noticed near the end that a few plot threads weren't really resolved - like how is Alva's mom, or did she die?

Despite this, I found it to be a very enjoyable read. I look forward to the 2nd book, and hope Bernard and Alva come back as strong secondary characters.

Can I say again that I did not want to put this book down?

I enjoyed the chemistry amongst the different characters and often felt as if I was rooting for some and hating on others. To evoke that type of reaction in a reader isn’t easy and honestly kept me enthralled from the get go. This book definitely grabbed my attention and never let go.
