Editorial Reviews

Review

“Osman concocts a satisfyingly complex whodunit full of neat twists and wrong turns. But unlike most crime novelists, he ensures his book’s strength and momentum stem not from its plot or its thrills but rather its perfectly formed characters. Once again, the quartet of friends makes for delightful company… Heartwarming and enthralling. ‘They carried a kind of magic, the four of them,’ a policeman muses. That magic is still there in abundance.”
—Washington Post

The Bullet That Missed hits on every front. Its quandaries stymie, its solutions thrill, its banter is worth reciting and its characters exemplify an admirable camaraderie. One can only hope that the Thursday Murder Club’s next outing appears before long.”
—Wall Street Journal

“The Thursday Murder Club is back, and that should make everyone happy — except, of course, murderers. Richard Osman's engaging series about a group of crime-solving retirees has delighted readers since the first book.
The Thursday Murder Club, an international bestseller, was funny, original, baffling, poignant and thoroughly engaging. That's a high bar to set from the get-go, but Osman has easily achieved it in subsequent books… This book is as delightful as the others. A remarkable achievement, Osman up there effortlessly balancing on that very high bar.”
—Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“Not to be missed.”
—Parade

"Charming."
—People

“The mysteries are complex, the characters vivid, and the whole thing is laced with warm humor and—remarkably, considering the body count—good feeling. Your next must-read mystery series.”
—Kirkus, starred review

“Bestseller Osman’s diverting third Thursday Murder Club mystery (after 2021’s
The Man Who Lived Twice) delivers laughs along with a nicely woven plot....The pace is breezy, the characters are intelligent and varied in their interests and backgrounds, and the humor is often pitched to readers who understand the vagaries of getting older. Osman reliably entertains.”
—Publishers Weekly

“It's charming and, as always, will leave you guessing the murderer until the very end.”

“It’s the people, in the end, isn’t it?” says Viktor. “It’s always the people. You can move halfway around the world to find your perfect life, move to Australia if you like, but it always comes down to the people you meet.”✨✨In the third Thursday Murder Club book a decade old murder cold case with no body has caught the attention of our favorite retirees. If that’s not enough excitement, Elizabeth is being tasked with murdering a man or else Joyce’s life will be on the line. The crew will lead us to a slew of interesting locations and individuals as they attempt to solve the case.✨✨Osman has once again shown his prowess as blending seemingly unlinked story lines into one cohesive novel. This has continued to be one of my favorite aspects of the Thursday Murder Club books — seeing how all of the loose threads get resolved. Although, while enjoyable, I do feel like the overall plot wasn’t as good as the previous two books. With that said, the characters themselves continue to shine and sell the series. I love seeing what mayhem the retirees manage to find themselves in all while battling modern technologies. While not one of the core four, Bogden has easily become one of my favorite if not favorite characters. Joyce is my other favorite. Her interactions are always funny and wholesome. In this particular installment, her interactions with the Viking are just perfect. If you’re a fan of murder mysteries, this series is definitely work checking out.

Delightful read! This series is so uplifting and fun to read. Not only are these myriad characters unique and well developed, you just fall in love with each of them. And with this installment we have some new interesting players in the mix.
As an octogenarian, I genuinely appreciate these “old folks” being so savvy, smart, courageous, fun and funny. This is story telling at its finest without being ostentatious.

This series hits all the boxes for an entertaining story and mystery.

I throughly enjoyed this latest book in this series. I read at one point that the books have been optioned for movies and while I am not normally a fan of book to movie endeavors a few have worked out ok. I can see this series being successful. Every time I read one of the books I have cast members in my head and it makes it so enjoyable for me to picture it. Helen Mirren as Elizabeth, Judy Dench as Joyce. I go back and forth on the male leads. But it’s fun to think about. These characters are very three dimensional to me. The wonderful writing does that. And I know the writing must be good because I normally not a fan at all of third person narration/POV.

In this book there are several key things going on and I love the essentially madcap way it all comes together. What starts as looking into a ten year old murder of a journalist branches out to other crimes and interesting investigative techniques. Elizabeth is ever resourceful and all the gang eventually contribute in surprising ways. We may even have some new recruits to the club.

The writing is crisp and the story arc moves well. There are quite a few very clever lines which made me laugh out loud. I read it all in one sitting as I didn’t want to put it down. Looking forward the the Thursday Murder Club’s next adventure!

All the books in this series have been fantastic. The mysteries are well thought out and the characters are funny, smart and witty. I recommend this series to anyone who will listen including some of the patients in the nursing home where I work.

This "Bullet" hit the mark. God bless Richard Osman, his sleuths get their man, and Bethany gets away! What a great story! I'm looking forward to the fourth book in the series.
Each book does the impossible--it improves on the prior story. I'm such a fan of the author, I wish I had a suitcase or another gift with his image from "House of Games!" Bravo!

A lot of the Thursday mystery club involves meeting for food, chess, tea but the murder that the club takes on in this book is quite interesting since there are. Big time criminals involves, lots of money and great clues. The atmosphere can be a little prim. Not enough blood for me but there you have it.
