Vigil's Justice: A LitRPG Adventure (Vigil Bound Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 2,332 ratings

Magic weapons. Deadly monsters. Epic quests. All just another day in the life of a Vigil.

Boyd Knight found his calling when he joined the Marines and qualified for the elite Force Recon. He’d found a tribe and a family, so when a hand grenade landed near his team, he jumped on it without thought or regret.

But instead of winding up dead, he wakes up butt naked in a cave full of monsters with a knife in one hand and a pistol in the other. He’s been chosen by Raguel, Five-Faced God of Justice, and entrusted with the power of the Vigil Bound. Every kill makes him stronger, and thanks to the Ascendant System, Boyd can level up, unlock increasingly powerful spells, and even harness the abilities of the monsters he’s been dispatched to hunt.

If he can survive the deadly shapeshifter stalking him from the shadows, Boyd’s second life promises to be even more ass-kickingly epic than his first.

There is a lot to like about this book.
Fast paced, but does not feel rushed. Not one, but two comic relief sidekicks who are not annoying and actually add something to the story. Fights that have dramatic tension. A hero who charges into combat naked as the day he was born. Good interaction between the characters. The fun to read plot.
All of the good things make it so I was not disappointed that the mystery was easy to solve. I highly recommend. Tom out

James Hunter came out and dropped a master work within LitRPG. This story has action, humor, depth and non-stop fun and entertainment. a level of immersion that I haven't gotten in a long time. This is a top tier LitRPG story that everyone will enjoy and could easily be put down as a Military LitRPG sub-genre. Great stuff James. Well done!

I’ve read a lot of LitRPG books. Some good, some not-so-good. This one is on the good side. Nothing super original but still a fun read and even has a bit of a mystery that our protagonist has to solve.

Good page turner, plenty of action, lockroom humor, progressive RPG math, mix in a detective tale, looks a good start to a fun tale

This is a great book. It's a bit simple, but that's what I needed. A straightforward romp of action, world building, humor and mystery. The main character is funny, learns from his mistakes, and isn't over powered like some Isekai novels. The world reminds me of the Witcher meets the video game Fable, and is amazing. I am definitely going to continue reading the series and would recommend this book to those who like Gamelit and Isekai.

Really good storyline and likable characters. A little wordy when describing powers and stuff for my taste, but luckily, I can ignore things I don't like if the story is interesting. I will definitely look forward to book 2.

I do have a spot of issue with first person POV, but that's just spitting in the wind at this point. Beside my personal preference on POV, though, the book was well written. A bit too male gaze-y in some bits, but appropriately in character for the POV character.
I do have to call out that the action was very good! They followed logically most of the time, and were suitably badarse.

I haven't read a physical book in quite a while. Been seeing the ads for this on Facebook and I am a fan of Isekai. I mean, who doesn't love some escapism with this world we live in. Great book, almost read it in one sitting. I've already bought the other three books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Pulp fiction

This story is shaping up to be a good Pulp fiction. It has plenty of action and a fast pace. However, what it does not have is any substantial amount of humour and romance. Also, the proofreading is occasionally spotty.
Still it is good to read once .

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read

An another world (isekai) story of a marine reincarnated into another world. After dying in combat the protagonist is reincarnated by a god of justice to fight evil. As you expect it is written from a soldier's view point but isn't hard to parse. Kinda like The Witcher.

The world features a system like interface and advancement although it is not too overbearing. The first novel is based pretty much in one city and the protagonist really only moves between several locations so not much is fleshed out but those.

Well written with only one or two typos. Worth reading if you like the fantasy, isekai genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic start

I thoroughly enjoyed this story - the characters all had distinct personalities, especially Renholm, the ignorant slut. The action was fast-paced, didn't linger overly long or get mired down in dull minutiae. The power system is probably one of the best I've seen come out of litrpg - giving a wide range of options and room for exciting abilities. The humour was good, the prose was excellent for the genre. Overall a great addition to litrpg.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raguel , the five faced God of justice.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 24, 2022
Boyd escaped death to be reborn as a Vigil , a warrior for justice. Boyd is okay , he has a big heart and assisted by Cal his spirit buddy , Redholm a pixie with nefarious tendencies and Arturo who is more than the priest he appears he is tasked with hunting down the Hexbright , a monster way out of his league , Boyds one flaw is that he's not the smartest tack in the box , I'd figured out who was the Hexbright about halfway through the tale , but he's a persistent hero and aside from the confusing magic and overpowering abilities quite satisfactory.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Litrpg Mystery
Reviewed in Australia on January 10, 2023
A good start with plenty of action and exploration. This one has a mystery. Who is the monster and why is it targeting it's victims? The magic system was interesting and flexible and can be reset so the Vigil can use abilities and skills from different brantches depending on what situation is encountered. I liked the cat riding pixie. What a little monster. Looking forward to Boyd's next adventure.
