The book manages to be a highly readable synthesis of the history, philosophy, ethics, controversies, and practice of modern witchcraft. It is extremely interesting and a fast, compelling read. I found it very hard to put down.
I was surprised by how much information the author managed to pack into one volume. If someone who knew nothing about witchcraft picked up this book and read it, they would have everything they needed to begin a very deep and meaningful practice of their own. The author also gives tons of recommendations on other authors and works to explore, should one wish to delve deeper on various topics.
The author did not shy away from controversy. There is thorough coverage on types of magic and practices that are super controversial. There is an excellent discussion of cultural appropriation. Environmental concerns are addressed in a fascinating way. I thought the author managed to do an excellent, balanced job of presenting all facets of these topics (and others) and the arguments on all sides.
Another thing that I thought really made this book rather unique is that the author provides information for people of all faiths. No matter what your religious beliefs, the author has suggestions for ways to live a more “magical” life within the framework of your own religion. The author provides helpful information and instructions without being preachy or dogmatic. Are you a retired Catholic Grandma? This book can help you be more in touch with nature and more appreciative of and connected to the world God created. Are you a Buddhist computer programmer? This book can show you how to deepen your meditative practice and increase your ability to transcend the day-to-day struggles of this world. There really is something for everyone in this book.
Finally, the book is just fun to read. I found the author’s voice very enjoyable. They have a great sense of humor and an academic wit that I loved. Each chapter is thorough, complete, and executable, without being dry or boring in any way.
I learned so many interesting things from this book. It is an all-around winner, and well worth your time!
