The Devil You Know: A Grumpy Boss Romance (The Grumpy Devils Book 3) Kindle Edition
There’s a devil on my shoulder, and every Monday morning she announces herself. She’s this delicious flame in my chest, a flurry of whispered suggestions in my ear. Suggestions I ignore…because every single one of them is about Ben Tate.
Ben—Stealer of Clients, Evicter of Homeless Women, Nemesis. Sitting across from me every damn Monday with his lovely, smug smile and his too-perfect teeth, the living symbol of everything I hate.
It’s been my policy to avoid him, but when a case comes into the firm—one that could change his career and mine—I make an exception. It means weekends and evenings by his side. It means enduring his smirk and his smart mouth and never taking the bait.
Until the night Ben says “Beg"...and that devil on my shoulder decides to make a few demands of her own.

About the author
Elizabeth O'Roark has a bunch of degrees she does not use and gave up working as a medical writer to craft grumpy, alpha heroes and the flawed women who love them. When not writing, she likes to spend time with her three kids, who are now teenagers and wish she'd find a different way to spend time. She can be found on Facebook feverishly debating whether or not "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie and telling people to read "The Hating Game", which she did not write but wishes she had.

Cute characters, cute love story!
Rivals to lovers, slow burn, I guess technically he is her boss but like not really, badass woman, he fell first
There was way more spice in this than in the first two, but somehow it was still not enough.
-1 star because it took me a long time to read because it was slow in the middle
🔘Workplace romance
🔘He falls first
🔘Both mc’s are lawyers
Another fascinating novel by Elizabeth O'Roark. The tension simmering in this enemies-to-lovers story is glorious!
Meet Gemma Charles, a brilliant lawyer whose blood boils with resentment when her colleague, Ben Tate, steals her client right from under her nose. Fast forward two years, and the rivalry between them has reached scorching levels, turning their law firm into an explosive battleground where desire is the only winner.
The sparks that fly between Gemma and Ben left me breathless! This is enemies-to-lovers at its finest. The witty banter has me in stitches. This book was perfection.
But what truly sets this tale apart is the well-developed characters. Gemma and Ben are not just adversaries turned lovers; they are complex individuals with their own backstories, insecurities, and dreams. It's impossible not to resonate with their emotional growth and root for their happiness.
Whether you're a fan of workplace romances or simply craving a good enemies-to-lovers story, this book is a must-read or listen!
"The Devil You Know" is narrated by the exceptional Samantha Brentmoor. Each character comes alive through her solo performance, adding to the overall experience.
Gemma has a hard shell due to her horrible father and other men who have used and abused her then cast her aside. She is a woman struggling in a male-dominated career.
Ben is a puzzle and hard to figure out. He doesn't start off being very likeable but does redeem himself and ends up being very loveable.
Great story.
I love the discourse between the two characters up until somewhere in the middle it gets pretty boring. They never really discuss anything, just bone.. and everything is written pretty monotone. Spice level is pretty good though in some scenes.
Every chapter is written like it could be the beginning of a book, which I dont hate but I thought I'd throw that observation in there.
There are no true characters outside of the couple, even named characters are just there to exist or throw advice.
There is almost no actual plot to this story.
The ending after their "breakup" is extremely quick and boring and like.. 'okay we are forever now, everything is fine, everything is forgiven'
Theres alot of jumping through time here... not big jumps, but months between with nothing acctually happening. As I said.. there is no real plot.
Spoiler on what is a plot though:
Gemma's parents split up and had a nasty divorce. Her dad took everything and now her mom is super poor. She became a lawyer who wants to defend women in this mysoginystic world. Shes hoping to get a promotion.
She hates this guy who she ends up having sex with and they work some cases together and then start a relationship. Shes unsure about him because she has issues trusting and this causes tension between the two. He gets promoted, she doesnt. They both leave the firm to start their own. They are now openly in love, the end.
That's the entire plot.

As much as I loved Josh I think I loved Ben more. I am obsessed with how obsessed he was with her - but not in the weird way like in The Hating Game.
You fall in love with Josh the same way Gemma does, slowly chipping away at her armour and catching glimpses of the way he is just head over heels with her. Her insecurities and doubts were so real it was easy to see why she pulled back in the moments she did.
I just loved their chemistry. O’Roark does an excellent job of giving her characters something to bounce off each other: joking insults, running jokes, and cute moments they can reference.
TL;DR: This was probably my favourite book in the series so far. This is a rivals-to-lovers office romance done so perfectly! I absolutely loved Ben and Gemma’s snippy banter, their insanely hot chemistry that could set the world on fire, and the way they built trust and a relationship together. Seriously, the whole combination was so good and these two, especially Ben, will have you swooning hard!
LISTEN. Elizabeth O’Roark has me completely reconsidering my status as a non-angsty romance reader because THE ANGST in this book sent me out in the best way and holy cheese, I loved it so much!
Ben and Gemma are lawyers at the same firm with big reputations—her for being a ruthless and cold “maneater” in court and him for being the arrogant golden boy of the firm. Their rivals-to-lovers office romance was full of incredible snippy and witty banter and their chemistry was all-consuming. The way the sexual charge between them absolutely jumped off the page gave me goosebumps! Seriously, the build up of their chemistry was done so amazingly that it had me gritting my teeth in high anticipation for when they'd come together.
This was told in single POV and while I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would, I’m a little sad that we didn’t get Ben’s POV cos I think it would’ve just made him that much more of a well-rounded character and I honestly wanted to know what he was thinking at certain points. But I do think O’Roark did a fantastic job of showing his character through Gemma’s eyes. He definitely won me over with his caring, his play into their banter, the way he had Gemma’s back even when she thought he was stealing her clients, and his dirty talking. 🥵 There were so many swoony moments that had my heart beating so fast!
Gemma was a pretty interesting complex character and I loved all her layers. She might be one of my favourite FMCs because she was just so realistic and relatable. She comes off abrasive at times because of how closed she kept herself but I felt her hurt and her fear of being vulnerable so deeply. What I also loved is that she’s a secret softie and hopeless romantic, just like Ben is! She has such a big heart and I loved seeing her drive to make sure her clients who have been abused by a system that inherently favours the patriarchy get what they deserve.
In the epilogue, we get a small hint about whose story could possibly be next and I’m hella excited for it because these romances keep getting better and better, so I can’t wait to read it! 😍
In The Devil You Know, Elizabeth O’Roark tackles a topic that is common and frustrating, but she does it pretty well. I feel like tons of readers will relate to this and understand the struggles of being a woman in a male-dominated workplace, because this book takes on harassment, misogyny and even the #MeToo movement, while at the same time weaving it into a gorgeous romance between the two leads that by the end of it you might feel slightly hungover. But in all the good ways, of course.
I have a thing for strong, bada** and powerful women taking men down one day at a time and O’Roark does that with all the books in this series. But I think Gemma’s level of sass, bada**ery and determination might just be my favourite. As a lawyer with a well established firm in LA, Gemma’s working towards making partner and being the only woman at that level. But there are more than enough obstacles standing in her way. Not just the man she considers her rival and archnemesis, but literally every man who is already a partner. But that doesn’t stop Gemma, no. She’s going to get that partner position no matter what it takes, even if it means staring her bosses in the face when things go completely wrong. But on the other side, Gemma’s history with her parents divorce and her obsession with Hallmark movies shows you how determined she is to not just stand to the side and let everyone else do the work. She was the perfect balance of every heroine I’ve read and I think that’s what really drew me to her.
And then there’s Ben Tate. I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get his POV, because after we got Josh’s side in The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea, I figured we’d see more male perspective. However, the story still flows and works perfectly without it. So I’m not complaining, just…observing, I guess? Anyway, Ben. I loved that there was so much more to Ben than meets the eye, and we learned about him and discovered things about him as Gemma does and that lended to that mystery about him right from the start. I liked that even through Gemma’s eyes, he comes across as slightly complex and he’s got a lot going for him that we don’t get to know all at once. Which was strangely endearing.
Their relationship is hot. Not just the steam (which is fantastic), but the chemistry. As rivals competing for the partnership position, Gemma and Ben are constantly going to head to head on cases and different things. And that banter, that back and forth, the tension and the burning lust and desire really amps everything up. Honestly, I could spend forever just writing a review about the banter, because it was fantastic. It was snappy, cutting, funny and entertaining. It gave such insight into these characters too and that was probably one of my favourite things about it.
I didn’t want this book to end, so I tried to drag it out, but at the same time, it was just so brilliant, it was hard to put down! Elizabeth O’Roark has done it again and I am absolutely and completely in love with her writing, her mind and I cannot wait to see what comes next!
