In Light of Recent Events: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 55 ratings

In the 1990s American workplace, survival of the fittest is sometimes less about clawing your way to the top than developing good camouflage. And Audrey Rohmer is doing her very best to blend in as an undistinguished middle manager. Uninspired by her job and uneasy about her father's new marriage, Audrey coasts through the work week leaning on her “partner in apathy” – an admin assistant named Pooter – to keep her relationship with the married head of her department from becoming water cooler gossip.

But when an old family friend-turned-Hollywood-superstar crashes on her doorstep in the midst of a publicity crisis, Audrey's under-the-radar status quo gets upended, and the writing may literally be on the bathroom wall that secrets will find a way out.

Equally acerbic and heartfelt, In Light of Recent Events is both an endlessly engaging piece of storytelling and a fascinating commentary on workplaces, families, and fame.

Review

“I really enjoyed IN LIGHT OF RECENT EVENTS. It's a fast, fun, emotionally engaging novel about friendship, family, and the day-to-day horrors of middle management. Amy Klinger gives us a delightful cast of characters to relate to, laugh with, and, ultimately, root for.” -- Matthew Norman, author of DOMESTIC VIOLETS

“With a wit as precise as an edge of a carefully cut diamond, In Light of Recent Events navigates universal workplace intrigues in this thoughtful story about love, friendship, and growing up.” -- Jane Ward, author of In the Aftermath

Witty and sharply insightful, the book quickly draws you in with a cast of relatable characters and a story that seamlessly intertwines life in the 90’s with flashbacks to the 70’s and 80’s, as small-town America crosses paths with the glamour of Hollywood. It’s a story about finding one’s place and being “successful” in the world of friendship, family, career, and even home, with the laughs and tears that go along with the journey. The overarching theme of “middle management” extends to all of these areas of life in a story that will resonate with anyone who has ever found themselves “stuck in the middle” of anything. There’s also a touch of nostalgia for those of us who remember a time before cellphones, the Internet and random access to every song ever recorded. Well-paced and thoughtful, with some clever wordplay thrown in for good measure. A terrific debut novel.

Mrs. Klinger's debut novel is an impressively captivating story with nostalgic undertones for anyone who grew up somewhere in the '70s-'90s. The characters are well developed; the protagonist is flawed but remains likable, and her imperfections make her relatable. While much of the novel is humorous with fun anecdotes and situations, there are some deeper storylines that most people will be required to ultimately face during their lifetime.

The observational humor, depth of characters, and compelling narrative make this novel a fantastic, fun, and thought-provoking read. I personally can't wait for Amy's next book.

For anyone who has toiled away in the drudgery of an office job they just couldn't manage to care about, this is a lovely little novel, with characters you will come to genuinely care about (despite their insistence on making very poor decisions at almost every turn). Good writing, solid characters and amusing situations - I found myself super invested in the ending, and thinking about the characters for weeks after I finished the book. Pick up this first novel by Klinger and enjoy! Makes a great beach read!

As an avid reader, In Light of Recent Events by Amy Klinger did not disappoint. The characters are relatable, the story unpredictable and the humor witty and fun. Amy Klinger is a talented writer whose observations of the world and human behavior make the story come alive and brought me right into their lives, the 90’s and all the twists and turns it brought with it. A wonderful read!

Cheers to Amy Klinger and her debut novel,"In Light of Recent Events." It was so enjoyable that I hated to see it end! Audrey and Pooter were so likable and relatable, and their in-office/out-of-office relationship was one not often depicted in books, yet so common in the workplace. The poor decisions made by some of the main characters were all too human, and the reconciliation of those acts, and redemption in the end, were well Also, having grown up in New Jersey in the 70s, the descriptions of time and place sent me back to that time. I could smell the gypsy moths.

You know it's a great story when you can't wait to read what happens next, but you don't want the story to be over. The author has created vivid images, and authentic characters... people of a certain decade will feel right at home! I wasn't ready to "say goodbye" to this story, and I am not-so-secretly hoping for a sequel. The author's writing style is sophisticated, yet light and fun.... witty and clever, but also sensitive and warm. The characters are flawed in endearing ways. Bravo to a beautifully crafted story!

I love a book that at the end it makes you think about your own life's decisions. This did just that for me...how lives are intertwined and how each person's decisions impact someone's elses life. This was a great read. I loved the humor, the sarcastic wit and the beautifully written prose.
Looking forward to more from this author!
