Romance stories have changed and grown a lot during the past 20 years. My favorites are Christian suspense. And Love Inspired books are great for that type book. I just finished this four book series and enjoyed them all. Karen Kirst penned 4 great books. All set in Tennessee, The Smokie Mountains, and a mounted police unit. Fantastic!

Cruz Castillo grew up on a ranch in Texas. After the death of his older brother, Cruz sought justice as an undercover police officer, then joined the mounted patrol unit in Serenity, Tennessee.

Jade Harris got mixed up with the wrong man while in college in Florida. Offered protection if she helped the authorities capture him, Jade was relocated to Tennessee. When he escapes and comes looking for Jade, next-door neighbor Cruz vows to keep her safe.

Witness Protection Breach is the fourth and final book of the Smoky Mountain Defenders. Karen Kirst closes out the series with a message of forgiveness and letting go of the past. As Christmas approaches, the author brings all the couples together to celebrate the season. The epilogue was perfect and wrapped up the stories of the members of the unit nicely.

I purchased a paperback copy of this book.

Cruz is so closed off in his heart and life, even from God, because of past heartaches and mistakes. As he steps up to protect Jade and Henry, he realizes that he can’t stay that way. Through their struggles, he returns to the Lord and learns you can open your heart again, when the right one holds it.

A sweet story to end the series; the epilogue gives one last look at the mounted unit and the happiness they have found through everything they have faced.

I recommend all of Karen’s books and series. They are all faith-filled, wholesome stories.

I love the way Karen Kirst hooks me with her opening sentence every time. "Somewhere in the square, a truck engine backfired, and Jade Harris choked on her steamed vanilla milk." My spidey senses go on high alert and I'm immediately wondering a) what's in Jade's past to startle her so? And b) was that really a truck backfiring or...Whether it was or not, my eyeballs are already tripping over themselves to find out what kind of mayhem lies in store. And, of course, this author doesn't disappoint. My anxiety level spiked before the end of the first chapter.

This is the fourth (and final, I think) book in the Smoky Mountain Defenders series. No worries, it can be read as a standalone, but for fans of these mounted police officers and their equine partners, there's some nice cameos from previous books throughout this one. I'm really hoping the Love Inspired Suspense line might consider a Mounted Police continuity series, the way they've done for K-9s in recent years. Fingers crossed and pretty please!

Lots of intrigue and danger with a few romantic interludes interspersed. But both suspense and romance are fraught with complications and some wild u-turns on occasion. And it all makes for a riveting read. Oh -- and there's Christmas! What more can a reader as for in December?

Karen Kirst has ended her Smoky Mountain series with flair! Jade and Cruz were engaging to watch as they interacted throughout the book and it was fun to see how the other couples have continued to grow together. It was compelling to read how Jade managed to protect her young son from the knowledge and effect of the violence and fear surrounding them. I also really loved that Jade tells Cruz to not bring up her bad choices because she is already forgiven. How amazing that one line lesson and how many of us could live better if we remember that for ourselves! As with all her books, Kirst keeps you turning page after page and sacrificing sleep to get to the HEA. I highly recommend this book as well as anything written by this author.

I just loved this Book. It kept me on the edge of my seat. When you thought the bad guy was going to win the Lord took care of his people. This is a great read with a great ending. I am sad that this is the last of this series. All Karen Kirst books are wonderful and if you are not reading them, you are missing out. Thank you Karen Kirst for writing such great books.

The book was so hard to put down. Several interactions with the antagonist left me irritated and angry. Not at the book, but at the character itself. It's the kind of feeling you want to have toward the bad guy. It made me want to punch him for our lovely heroine. Cruz and Jade's chemistry was wonderful which made you upset when they would put blockades up to keep them from being together. But you root for them the entire time and they finally come together. It was a wonderfully written story that kept me hooked the entire time.
