Purchase options and add-ons
Following a racially motivated rape by three Ku Klux Klansmen, 12-year-old Cassandra Monroe vows revenge. After eight years of training, now a strikingly beautiful assassin, she accomplishes her mission.
Her campaign continues with solitary walks through dark city streets, hoping to be assaulted by men with bad intentions. Those entrapped by her spider’s web pay dearly for their efforts.
Surrounded by white men one night, she’s rescued by Mike Borelli, an Italian-American passerby. A stormy up-and-down relationship ensues. Ultimately, as her rage matures into purposeful action, and as he begins to see the world through her eyes, they become a team.
Along the way, they encounter serial killers, wife-beaters, actual and would-be rapists, gangsters, crooked cops, a kidnapper and a pedophile priest, as well as numerous women in desperate need of their help. Beneath all the action, though, is the blossoming of a most unusual love story.

Review
Cassie Monroe begins her life in rural Mississippi during the Jim Crow era, taking care of her father, Madison, after her mother dies. When Madison attempts to register to vote, men from the local KKK clan brutalize 12-year-old Cassie, thinking to send a message to her father. Cassie keeps the attack to herself but vows that one day she'll have her revenge. A short while later, they move to Brooklyn and Cassie meets the people who will give her the support and skills to set her on her path to become a deadly vigilante. As Cassie becomes involved in the lives of some of the people that she helps, she begins to realize that there is more to life than revenge and she has more to offer than violence.
The story takes place in the 60's & 70's and, having grown up during that era, I can appreciate the authenticity of the story, which deals with social injustice, racism, gender inequality, sexual violence, misogyny and cultural differences. Given the social climate of the past year, much of this will resonate with today's readers. This may sound heavy but Mr. Isaacs keeps you riveted while dealing with these difficult and uncomfortable topics with some sensitivity. I also appreciate that Cassie and the people she surrounds herself with are flawed but real characters, and you get character growth along with electrifying action.
Avenging Angel is one of those rare gems - an action-packed crime thriller that also gives you broader themes to think about, even after you've finished the book. Chock full of sizzling scenes and memorable characters, this book will keep you captivated until the final page! I really enjoyed reading this book. Chick Lit Café highly recommends Avenging Angel: Love & Death in Old Brooklynby Charles S. Isaacs. Grab your copy of this incredible crime thriller today!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2024Maybe you’ve read a book like this before, but I never have. It was so realistic, yet creative. Will be reading the sequel. The title says it all.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2022I loved this book. There were no drag marks in the story. It held my interest throughout.
It's gruesome in some places, but the serious violence takes place off the page. There is rape and near-rape discussed, but again, any actual rape is off the page. The same goes for sex scenes; you are aware of it, but there are no pages-long graphic sex scenes.
The story is sensational. Cassie Monroe is a martial arts expert who uses her skills to teach bad boys some manners. She is revenge-driven, stemming from a violent and traumatic experience in her childhood. Mike Morelli is an ex-cop turned private investigator who feels the need to protect her.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2023A very relevant tale about situations today. Many people still have the same attitudes, but mostly things are changing in my view. Hopefully one day such things will go the way of the VCR. But it starts with us being kind to each other. Can't wait to start the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2023Murders and beatings because "they deserved it". Black people good. White people mostly bad. If it was a movie, it would be PG-13. Amazon wouldn't post my real review.

Cassandra had been raped by three KKK members at age twelve in a racially motivated attack. After eight years of training, she intends to seek out vengeance by using herself as bait on the streets of Brooklyn at night, then attacking the would-be attackers. When a passerby tried to help her, Cassandra develops a relationship with Mike Borelli, and together they expand on her vision to help those in need and protect those that can't protect themselves.
Cassandra never discusses the trauma that led her father to move them from Mississippi to New York City in 1963; he doesn't even know why she suddenly became so angry and reticent to speak but thought he was escaping the wrath of white men angry with him for trying to register to vote. She does mention it later, and the flashback chapter is thankfully devoid of details regarding the excruciating trauma. We see her training and then the revenge she seeks, all told in a matter of fact kind of way. There is a stark disconnect through all of this so that once you get past the awful violence of it, there are few details, no emotional content, no connection whatsoever. She brightens up a bit when she takes on a protector role in Brooklyn and goes "hunting," but it still feels very much like we're getting only a surface description of events.
Mike's chapters are interspersed with Cassie's, so we see his life and training in the NYPD, then getting set up to take the fall for a shooting gone wrong. His chapters are first-person point of view rather than the third person of Cassie's chapters. Even so, there is still the same emotional distance to his part of the story in the beginning. While one part of it could be explained as the drugged haze in the hospital, I still found it difficult to emotionally attach to him. The casual conversations about mafia families are interesting, especially when they reference known families operating out of Brooklyn in that period. It also makes sense that he could casually talk to them and ask for favors and that this connection leads to a lot of his difficulties in life and in his burgeoning relationship with Cassie.
Interestingly, there's a little less of the emotional disconnect with the characters as Mike and Cassie begin to orbit each other. It's as if they weren't fully in touch with their emotional lives until they bring out of each other, and now they're fully realized and actualized people. I don't know if that was deliberately done, or if it was a way to push through the past to get to the current story arc. There is a lot of drama in both of their lives, and the casual racism of 1971 only adds to it. Policemen and random passersby make comments, but it's also amazing that the people that matter most to Cassie and Mike accept their attraction and love for each other. There is also more emotional content and background for the other characters at that point, and they start working together as a team, not just for Cassie's vigilante justice on behalf of women, but to help others in New York that don't know her personally.
I think the novel found more of its stride moving past the choppy descriptions of violent and angst-filled pasts and into how all of the characters use that pain and transform it into a way to better the lives of other women all around them. In the process, they find their own sense of community and a purpose for the future. It ends on a far more hopeful note than it began with, and that is the part that resonated with me.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2021I think the book was well written. I found the plot of the story easy to follow and the main characters were interesting. I also liked that the story ended with the two main characters together despite their obvious differences. There was nothing that I did not like about the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2020I had no idea what to expect going into this book but I was looking forward to diving in. Wow what a read! You’re hit with a lot right from the beginning. I was intrigued. Cassandra is intriguing and complex. The storytelling is excellent and I was easily transported to a different time. From the story to the characters to the issues in this book, the author did a fantastic job bringing it all together. Cassandra is relatable. She’s strong and vulnerable. She has a code. Wants to do the right thing. All of that made her very likable.
There’s so much to appreciate in this story. It has a bit of everything in it. Action, revenge, strong women and even some romance. The book is well written. This book is highly entertaining and will stay with you long after you finish. I highly recommend you adding this and then moving it up on you TBR. You won’t be disappointed! I give it 5 stars.
