A Wish For Jo: A fabulous, feel-good romantic comedy with a hint of magic! (Cranley Wishes Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 117 ratings

The hilarious sequel to A Wish For Jinnie! Best read in order.

Jo Milligan's café — A Bit of Crumpet — is her pride and joy.
But icing cakes and baking pastries in the sleepy Scottish village of Cranley isn't hitting the sweet spot.

Jo longs for some excitement in her life. The arrival of gruff stranger Harvey Quinn doesn't fill her with joy. Nor does the appearance of an unlikely assistant with an unexpected gift … and a serious attitude problem.

Genie Aaliyah grants Jo three wishes, but coming up with ideas proves challenging.

As Jo grows closer to Cranley's newest resident, secrets threaten to derail their relationship.

Can Jo find a way to cook up a happy ending, or do the ingredients add up to a recipe for disaster?

Praise for A Wish For Jinnie

'Charming, enticing, compelling, joyous.'

'Perfect escapism.'

'It made me believe in magic.'

'A fabulous feel-good read.'

Audrey Davis survived secondary school on the West coast of Scotland. Rubbish at science but not too bad at English, she originally wanted to be an actress but was persuaded that journalism was a safer option. Probably wise. She studied at Napier College in Edinburgh, the only place in Scotland at that time to offer a journalism course.

Her first foray into the hard-nosed newspaper world was as a junior reporter in Dumfriesshire. Duties included interviewing farmers about the prize-winning heifers to reporting on family tragedies. She persuaded her editor to let her launch an entertainment column which meant meeting the odd celebrity – or just the downright odd. From there, she moved to the loftier rank of senior reporter back in her home patch. Slightly more money, fewer farm animals but a higher crime rate. As Taggart would say: 'There's been a murrrrder!'

After a stint in London on a video magazine – yes, she is that old – Audrey moved to Singapore with her fiancé. She tried valiantly to embrace the stinking heat, humidity and lack of jobs, although she did work briefly on a magazine which was banned by the government for 'artistic' use of naked men's bottoms.

Next on her adventures was a land Down Under where her main focus was raising Cost Centre One (aka firstborn) and coming to terms with the imminent arrival of Number Two. Still, she loved the Aussie way of life – BBQs, beaches and bring your own booze to restaurants – so it came as a blow when OH announced a move back to the UK. Not a job between us, the climate a possible deal breaker and an Exorcist-style vomiting infant on the flight home didn't bode well …

Always a survivor, Audrey sought out similar-minded friends (i.e. slightly bonkers), got the children into a good school and thought about taking up writing again. Sadly, thinking about it was as far as she got, unless you count shopping lists. Then, hubby drops another bombshell. Switzerland. As in – it's packing time again. Off to the land of cheese, chocolate, scarily efficient trains and a couple of teeny, tiny issues. Like driving on the 'wrong' side of the road and speaking a foreign language (French). The former was conquered fairly quickly (we'll skip over the wall demolition in week two), the latter remains an ongoing battle of the hopeful against the hopeless. At least she provides amusement for the local workforce.

It wasn't until 2016 that Audrey rediscovered her writing mojo with an on line Writing Fiction course. From there, her first novel – A Clean Sweep – was born, although it took a bit longer than nine months from conception. A short, darker prequel – A Clean Break – followed, and in November 2017 she published the first in a novella trilogy, The Haunting of Hattie Hastings Part One. Parts Two and Three followed, and were combined into a standalone novel which received incredible reviews. Audrey's third novel - A Wish For Jinnie - was published in June 2020, and her fourth – Lost In Translation – in January 2021. A sequel to A Wish For Jinnie – A Wish For Jo – was published in June 2022. The final part of the Cranley Wish trilogy will be published in early 2023.

In book two of Cranley Wishes, we get Jo Milligan’s story. A supporting character in A Wish for Jinnie, the A Bit of Crumpet owner loves running her café but is yearning for more excitement in her life.

Does the answer to Jo’s dreams arrive in the form of her new assistant, Aaliyah? Maybe yes, maybe no. The outspoken young woman is also… wait for it… a genie, and will grant Jo three wishes. Seems simple enough, but these two cannot seem to agree on anything. So, it remains to be seen if Jo can get the life she yearns for, if Aaliyah can stop being the Queen of Chaos, and if Jo’s future includes Cranley’s moody new resident.

A fun romcom, this read brings the laughter and the tears as author Audrey Davis pulls us even deeper into the Scottish village with realistic characters and friendships. Add a little magic and a lot of heart and everyone’s kept on their toes. Especially Jo.

The pragmatic Jo and brusque Aaliyah balance the story nicely. Aaliyah’s unconventional viewpoints could be off-putting… and rude in some circles, but I loved her character and her challenging attitude.

Davis’ strong writing and talent for delivering the “feels” make A Wish for Jo a winner!

(Book one, A Wish for Jinnie, should be read first!)

Enjoy!

We are back in the wee Scottish village of Cranley and I couldn't wait to delve into this story, after reading A Wish for Jinne I was hoping that Jo would get her own story and Ms Davis did not disappoint with it!

Jo is now the proud owner of her very own Genie or rather Djinn Aaliyah - she is a sassy Geordie and drop dead gorgeous and Jo has her currently working in her cafe A Bit of Crumpet to try and explain her sudden appearance! Poor Jo had no idea what she had gotten herself into when she was cleaning the lamps that Jinnie had left and in turn had no idea how to deal with a genie! Jo's first wish was just beautiful - she wanted to spend one more day with her parents, a wish that I think many of us would love to have. Her second wish is something she has always wanted to happen and that is to appear on a baking show and her third wish? Well that was harder to think on.

Harvey Quinn is new in town and he is not without his own baggage and hurt, he is a cantankerous old man in a way but Jo sees something in him, and he begins to warm to her and open up about his past, - but not all of it at once and when Jo finds out something that could be a deal breaker it is only then that she realises what her third wish so be.

Despite this being Jo's story we still have Jinnie, Sam and Dhassim making appearances and I feel we are going to be seeing a lot more of our two genies! I can't wait to see who will have the delights of Dhassim or Aaliyah next.

Second book in the series. Definitely a little more sentimental than the first. Well for some people. I would have loved to have one of Jo wishes.
A lovely easy read. Lots of emotions. It was nice to see how the main characters from the previous book are getting on .
Looking forward to seeing the next set of wishes. Be interesting to see who predicts who's future .
Ps from the Mrs not Alan he's too busy solving crime stories

I never feel let down with Audrey’s writing. In fact, it’s got to the point where I’ll just buy her books without even reading a blurb. A Wish For Jo was no exception! It’s fun, charming and very difficult to put down, and has instantly captured my heart, just like the author’s previous books! The characters have become some of my favourites, their stories so heartfelt and memorable. The humour, as always, is right up my street, and the magic that comes with it makes this book unlike any other. I loved everything about it!
