Marriage is hard. Anyone who's been at it longer than a few years knows this to be true. Geraldine and Lionel have a lot of shared experiences--softball, friends, and history. But when you hit a Certain Age, sometimes that isn't enough. Plus, there's the added stress of owning and running a business together--one that's inherently stressful since it's dependent on employees showing up and customers supporting them. Add all this to the fact that Lionel has unresolved issues about a shared tragedy, and Geraldine works a little too hard to be everyone's flirty friend.
Now and Forever provides a realistic, thoughtful portrayal of a mature marriage at a crossroads. The main characters are three-dimensional, and the supporting cast supports without detracting from the story. Neither Geraldine or Lionel are perfect and the author doesn't try to force us to like them, while at the same time keeping us invested in their story.
Caveat: this book ends with a "will they or won't they," which I assume means there will be a follow up, but it worked for me since complex situations like theirs don't resolve easily.
