Review
"A sprawling but delicate story of personal evolution, Journey to the Heartland by Xiaolong Huang expertly navigates the fine line between heartbreaking and inspiring. This story is woven together on multiple levels, with themes of sexuality, cultural pressure, academia, and personal exodus, for a poignant meditation on freedom. The tone of the writing is unique and striking, boasting unexpected flourishes of description that make the prose vivid, yet understated. Huang captures the intersection of personal autonomy, conscious liberation, and critical thinking in a timely and undeniably powerful read." - Self-Publishing Review, ★★★★½

- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2022This book is a well written tale of personal struggle that takes you on a ride of emotions. Hanwei's childhood in the factory town presents a unique glimpse of life in China in the 80s. The painful childhood with the abusive father is sometimes hard to read, but the resilience of the protagonist is inspiring.
The book makes you think - did the childhood hurt or help Hanwei? A kid that grew up in traditional family circumstances in China would have had a really tough time coming out and living his life as a gay man. But going through the embarrassment in childhood and facing it boldly has made Hanwei's later life simpler, letting him be true to self and experience life to the fullest. If you have to go through that struggle, isn't it better to get it over with early in your life rather than waste half your life trying to be someone you are not?
This is by no means the story of an ordinary gay man that grew up in China. It presents many contradictions rather skillfully. Hanwei's academic success allowed him to get out of the factory town and made his adult life much easier, but could he have been as successful without his father introducing him to science and math early on in his life?
The book could have benefited by expanding on Rulans's character. After all, she is the one that suffered the most, so it would have been nice to give her more page time than leaving her just as a side note. In fact, in some of his later relationships, it feels like Hanwei didn't fight hard enough - almost makes you wish Rulan was there, like when she encouraged him to confront his father when he seemed reluctant to do so. But this is not a story of a hero; it is the story of an ordinary man having to struggle through unique circumstances. That, in a way, makes the book more relatable and inspiring.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2022Story has different levels of themes that defined the main character with his "adventure" in life. Story can be heartbreaking with the clash of culture and struggle with sexuality; and inspiring with the character's conscious liberation.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2022Reflecting on my own personal experiences while reading this book, the story reminded me of the non-liner and complex journey that we all take through life. While the author narrates the biography of a young Chinese gay man trying to find a better life for himself in the United States, broader themes of acceptance, perseverance, and service to others emerge as ideals that all readers can identify with and heal from. In the present day of political and democratic unrest, this book will leave readers with a call to duty to not only improve their own life’s circumstance, but to help others with whom they may not feel the capacity to immediately build an authentic connection because of their differences. This is a story that reminds me that while we are all different, we are all the same: human.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2022I found the story very emotional and also educational and motivational. To is amazing how driven the story teller was to change his life and to find joy for him and his mother. It also gave a glimpse into what life in China at that time was. It also showed the struggle that so many immigrants go thru to come to America. It reminds people how important it is to protect gay rights and to remove the homophobic hate around the world. How different would the story have been if his father could have been an openly gay proud man. Still the things he did were awful and having to live life in the closet doesn’t excuse him for what he did. I would recommend the book it will take you on a ride of emotions.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2022Sitting in my yard and reading this book, has become my weekend habit. It has not only brought me laughters, but also unstoppable tears. With the same cultural background as the author, I find this book highly relatable to my life. Life is not easy for gay people living in China, especially the ones who are brave enough to come out to their family and friends and be their truly selves. I feel so pitiful reading how his gay father has treated him, but also admiring how the author has grown up to be a successful gay young man finally finding his heartland. Last but not least, the interesting stories about the cultural differences between China and US, and the erotic homosexual scenes have added some spices to this well written true life story based masterpiece.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2022Journey to the Heartland follows the nuanced of a gay man navigating through domestic friction, societal pressures, cultural discrepancies, and political tension. From his conflicted upbringing in China to his education and eventually career in America, the author is consistently challenging stereotypes, redefining what it means to be asian american — and not to mention a gay asian american at that. Nevertheless, as a bay area engineer and a Chinese immigrant myself, I found the author's story particularly engaging and inspiring. To those looking for a heartfelt, expressive, and at times, provocative autobiography, I cannot recommend this book enough. And can’t wait to see future endeavors from the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2025Journey To The Heartland is a story of love, understanding, coming out, and living your truth. Coming out is a different experience for everyone. For some, it’s easy and carefree, and for others, it's the hardest thing in the world to do. It all depends on what kind of family and background you come from. The main character Hanwei’s story is one everyone should read. All the characters in this book are diverse and come from all sorts of backgrounds. They're well-written and feel real. The book makes you think deeper about people in your life and supporting them no matter what.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2024JOURNEY TO THE HEARTLAND’s loving clarity, accuracy, and passion bring the novel so close to the reader’s heart and awareness that its effect is soul-searching and comforting, even in the almost total absence of life circumstances that resemble the reader’s. I dreaded finishing it and anticipate rereading it soon. What a perfect gift for the end of the year!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book/personal story both humble and big.
A book that glued me from the beginning to the end. A book that makes me pause, think and reflect.
A boy who grew up with a gay father and a vulnerable/strong mother; a factory town during an unique era in China’ history; an extremely intelligent student throughout his academic life; a youth in the top university in China and one of the best in the world; secret and repressive life as a Chinese homosexual; explicit description of LGBA life in California; struggles and adaption from the East to the West; politics and human rights; 2009 WFC; interracial love and same-sex marriage……
Under all those eye-catching plots is the journey of an ordinary individual who learned, acknowledged, accepted himself, who struggled through and fought against the challenges his extraordinary life brought to him; who learned to receive and to give, to love and to be loved, and who eventually reached his own heartland.
This is a book for anyone who is not only humble enough to learn about life of another human being but also large enough to care for humanity.
