As they walked hand in hand along Rothschild Avenue on Thursday morning, in front of House No. 62, her phone rang. From the other end came an automatic message from the HMO reminding her of the appointment to an ophthalmologist next week.
In front of house 104 his phone rang. From the other end came an automatic message from the HMO reminding him of the appointment to a dermatologist next week.
They kept walking and since no further calls were received as far as Habima Square, they were very happy.
There's nothing like a hand in hand walk on a Thursday morning after almost forty - seven years of marriage!

At the age of sixty I decided that instead of bringing a cake to the office on my birthday I would publish an annual summary of experiences I had during the year. The intention was to share with friends younger than me experiences that can only come true at an older age.
Then I started writing short stories about things that happened to me, things I heard about, things that could have been and things that might still be in the near and in the more distant future.
At the age of seventy, I decided that since I really enjoyed my stories, more people might enjoy them - and the book is in front of you.
I am seventy or so, still working in high-tech, living in Moshav Yaad in the Galilee, happily married, healthy, surrounded by four successful sons, five wonderful grandsons and one excellent granddaughter.
I'm happy and looking forward to more ...

In Place of Cake: Short Stories collection about life, aging, family, past and future by Ramie Fishler is wonderful. Each short story is touching, relatable and very memorable. The author has a straightforward language that every reader can relate to the stories through along with the sublime prose of presenting the sentimental moments. Each story proves to draw an emotional response from the reader and seemingly makes the reader consider the beauty in their own lives more.

.....THEY ARE RATHER VIGNETTES ON A COMMON THEME. BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN. A REAL KEEPER.

So, I'm not really sure if this is supposed to be stories from his past or random musings about everything in general. All of the stories were well written and kept my interest. But some left me feeling sad, some left me confused, and some felt ... I don't know, happy doesn't seem to be the right word for it. However, the one thing every story left me feeling is thoughtful.

Israeli author Ramie Fishler serves in the high tech industry and is known by his colleagues and family as a fine story weaver. He now shares that gift with the reading audience with IN PLACE OF CAKE.

Ramie’s short stories are as poignant, touching, and memorable as any collection this reader has enjoyed. In direct, straightforward language he relates themes and thoughts of relationships, life’s vagaries, and gently sentimental moments that simply radiate off the pages. The initial story – Love – is related by an older man, David, who daily talks with his paralyzed wife Ella, the victim of an accident that confines her body to a wheelchair and her mind to who knows where. Out of love David sits and chats with Ella and their dog Millie (the author inserting their history as Polish Holocaust survivors), and when Millie dies, David chats with her photographic image, unwilling to share the loss with Ella…a story that defines ‘love.’

Other stories share encounters in Rome, a sensitive retirement story, and other simple moments that people share – stories that make the reader reflect on personal parcels of memory that surface from time to time, requesting being shared if only we had the gift of Ramie Fishler. Especially memorable and wistful, each story in this well-crafted collection leaves a welcome mark on the mind – banderoles for returning to this sensitive place. Very highly recommended. ...it was not. Somehow I thought all the little stories would be tied up, neatly, at the end. No. Some of these are half a page, some 1 or 2 pages long. To me these were all ideas for books that the author just threw all into one book. No rhyme or reason except they all seem to have something to do with Jews and Israel. That's fine as I learned some things I didn't know. But, as for a good, engrossing book this does not fit the bill. I couldn't wait for it to be over and deleted from my book list.

I love reading all theses little stories he has written of what he has gone through and what he thinks it's going to happen in the future alot of memories he can remember. He wrote most of them for the younger generation in case they might experience something like these stories it's a really good book read it if you like.i gave it 5 stars cause I really liked the book.
