Silver Sparks Kindle Edition
A multi-national pharmaceutical company is brutally harvesting red dragon salamanders at Trevian Bay, and barefoot 16-year-old Kaneia will go to drastic ends to stop it. Starting point: wake her marshwalking friend Jasper from the trance she laid on him ten years ago.
Kaneia and Jasper learn to communicate with the strange Silver Spark moths that glow in the dark but are invisible by daylight. But soon the moths are in the drug company's gunsights as well. When they start dusting the bay with toxic chemicals, Jasper gives chase on a human-powered flying bicycle.
The corporate execs double down against this resistance. But the bay itself might have the final say about this drug project.
Silver Sparks is an upbeat, offbeat eco-adventure with a dash of first love and magic. If you liked Princess Mononoke or the Earthsea series, prepare to be delighted. J.S. Bowers's second novel is a seaside roller coaster.
Click "Buy Now" to join Kaneia and Jasper in their struggle to save the bay.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2022Silver Sparks is an environmentally conscious coming-of-age story, with irresistibly charming characters and lines that will stay with you long after you finish reading. The few fantastical elements are grounded in ecology and kids being kids (or teens). The environmental theme is not forced; it weaves into the story as a natural, real-world concern for the characters of Trevian Bay. The author has undeniable wit and imagination, crafting a beautiful, heartfelt story about rural life, childhood, and finding your voice to protect what you love.
Once I was absorbed—and it did not take long—I was transported back to my semi-rural childhood, where I spent countless hours playing outdoors, digging up worms, building forts, and feeling the wind in my hair as I coasted my pink bike(!) down the largest hill. The descriptions are vivid; You can feel the mud and see the reeds and taste brackish waters of Trevian Bay, so much so that it becomes one of the lead characters. It made me realize how disconnected from nature I have become in adulthood, and reminds me to take a pause outdoors, use all of my senses, and appreciate what I started taking for granted (No lie! I ate my lunch in the park today instead of the stale cafeteria).
But my favorite part: the dialogue is incredibly entertaining. It's not just what they say, but how they say it, that is chock full of personality. I found myself reading the dialogue aloud for the fun of it on more than one occasion. The protagonist, Kaneia, narrates this tale in a way that is both perfectly practical and sublimely unorthodox; you can follow her logic and fall down the rabbit hole with her. Even if she winds up at the wrong conclusion, it's usually a lot of fun getting there. Overall, her feelings and thoughts are articulated in a way that is both deeply personal and highly relatable. As the reader, I felt like I was experiencing the story with her. And I would have appreciated friends like Kaneia and Jaspercito when I was in high school!
What you can't tell from the cover (and it's not a spoiler) is that Kaneia grows up in a church. Full disclosure: I do not enjoy books that delve into Christianity and Catholicism; That's a part of my past I do not want to revisit (I make an exception for Steve; you know who you are). But, to my surprise, Kaneia's religious views ended up being one of the most enjoyable elements of the story because they are uniquely her own, with metaphors chock-full of practicality, simultaneously sensible and ridiculous. While she is comfortable with the way she was raised in the church, she doesn't blindly adopt her family's beliefs. Wanting to forge your own spiritual path that isn’t aligned with your parents is something a lot of young people struggle with.
Admittedly, I wanted to see Jasper's character development run a little deeper. His character is by nature quieter than his sassy counterpart, so without being privy to his thoughts, it's difficult to get to know him like we do with Kaneia. He's funny and sweet but seems to have no other friends?! That is shocking to me. I am still highly recommending Silver Sparks by J. S. Bowers. While this would be a perfect book for my teenage nieces, it’s a nostalgic, quirky, and heartfelt story that everyone can enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2022Silver Sparks is a fun read with relatable, quirky characters and villains you'll love to hate. There's the kind of awkward, budding, teenage romance everyone can relate to, a mystery to solve, fears to overcome, adventure and intrigue that leads to tragedy, and so much more! J. S. Bowers takes us on a great adventure that's suitable for both teens and adults who enjoy a good, clean read without graphic violence, explicit sex or profanity. The suspense kept me up late, turning page after page, telling myself, "just one more chapter..." I do hope there will be a sequel, I'd love to revisit this world and it's characters again!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2023It took me a few chapters to get into this book. I wanted a clear plot, but the opening chapters were about kids and forts and childhood memories and possible special powers--like telepathic communication and the ability to walk on water. It was like having to get past the waves at the shore in order to set off on a journey. Eventually, the plot takes off around our hero and narrator, Kaneia. She's not willing to let a corporation steal the salamanders to make drugs for people who can't appreciate nature as it is. She'll even learn to work with academics and other eccentrics if she has to. It's a very creative ride, just edgy enough to be "out there" but close enough to reality to feel like social commentary. This book takes the abstraction of "protecting nature" and turns it into a real test involving moths and salamanders. Plenty of food for thought and plenty of fun too!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2022Kaneia is so sweet, cocky and self confident. Who could resist her? Certainly not hapless Jasper Farrow. She's been part of his life from a time even before his memory. Together they are a force to be reckoned with.
This is a fun read with delightfully quirky characters who will make you laugh out loud. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2022The story takes place around the Trevian Bay Estuary where the Silver Sparks moths have a special purpose to their evolution. J.S. Bowers’ writing is full of depth and vivid detail. It is a wild flying ride with complex characters that held my attention. A real page turner.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2022What a pleasure to be immersed into this world of marshwalkers, psychotropic swamp dragons, and mysterious Silver Spark moths; full of delightfully surprising twists and turns!
Kaneia is just the kind of character who would make a great friend: loyal, determined, willing to try whatever it takes to do what’s right. Like her world, she’s full of charm and clever humor. You can’t help but root for her, despite the odds (and oddball cohorts)!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2023Stated slow but gradually built in excitement. Linked the characters, there were good people, in between people, and really bad people. But most of all, I wish the place was real.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2022The humor on nearly every page, the wholesome adventures, and the very real and dire message about ecological conservation all come together in this undeniably charming tale of two young people discovering how strange and lovely the world can really be.
